MARAD Awards Nearly $39 Million in Marine Highway Grants

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) awarded nearly $39 million in grants to 12 marine highway projects across the Nation under the America’s Marine Highway Program (AMHP). U.S. Awards $61.8 Mln for Port Projects

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Fox today announced 40 awards totaling nearly $500 million in funding for the  FY 2016 Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grants. Of the 585 applications submitted totaling $9.3 billion in requests, six awards totaling $61.8 million – or about 12.36 percent of the total funding – are going to commercial seaports or projects that directly aid the efficient movement of goods to and from America’s ports. Port applications totaled 9 percent, or 53, of the total 585 submitted. In his written statement, Sec. Port of Guam Receives $461,712 Federal Port Security Grant

The Port Authority of Guam has been awarded $461,712.00 in federal funding to further enhance the security posture at the island’s only commercial sea port. In June of this year, the Port submitted an application to the USDHS/FEMA’s 2013 Port Security Grant Program in the amount of $615,615.00. Although federal funding has been greatly reduced for this fiscal year, the Agency was still able to receive 75% of its original request. The $461K will be used to repair the existing CMU wall, expand it by another 2,000 LF along Route 11, and install 4,500 LF of concrete-columned heavy duty chain link fence around its perimeter. Guam Port Improvement Underway

Construction begins on a $50-million project to improve the Port of Guam. The port improvement project will add ten acres to the container and break bulk yards, and reconfigure the port and the entrance gate for more rapid, efficient and secure freight movements. The construction work is scheduled to last two years. Along with other ongoing investments, the port modernization will meet the needs of an expanding military presence on Guam, as well as the island’s commercial growth for decades to come.The project is administered by the Maritime Administration (MARAD) of the Department of Transportation on behalf of the Department of Defense (DOD).

Horizon Lines Completes Firefighting Exercise in Guam

Horizon Lines has completed a containership fire-fighting exercise in Guam in cooperation with the Guam Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Port Authority of Guam and the Port Police Department. The training exercise was the culmination of a five-week vessel familiarization program conducted on Horizon's new Hunter Class vessels, which entered service in last year. The five new Hunter Class vessels each have a capacity of 2,824 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) and are capable of service speeds above 23 knots.
