TAIC Final Report on Emerald Princess Cruise Ship Explosion

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has published its report on the February 2017 accident in Port Chalmers, Dunedin, on board the passenger cruise ship Emerald Princess, in which a nitrogen cylinder burst, causing one fatality.The Chief Investigator of Accidents, Captain Tim Burfoot, says the ship’s crew were re-pressurising the gas cylinders after maintenance, when the cylinder burst and fatally injured a nearby crew member.The cylinder was part of a stored energy system providing an alternative means of launching lifeboats in the event of power failure. Such systems are common on cruise ships.“The nitrogen cylinder burst at below normal working pressure because its casing had corroded to about 30% of original thickness,” said Capt.

NZ Harbour Welcomes its Largest Container Ship

The largest Port in the South Island of New Zealand, Lyttelton Port, has welcomed its largest ever container ship.The Singapore–flagged Rio de Janeiro, which can carry nearly 6000 containers and is the length of about three rugby fields, arrived early Saturday.Lyttelton Port Company (LPC) Chief Executive, Peter Davie said, “The Rio de Janeiro is a new class of ship to call at Lyttelton. New Rotation of CMA CGM Joint Service Unveiled

CMA CGM Launches New PAD 2 Service

The CMA CGM Group announced the upgrade of its Oceania - U.S. services with the launch of the PAD 2 service, as from the beginning of March 2014. The group said PAD 2 will complement the existing fortnightly PAD 1 service and provide CMA CGM with improved coverage of the Oceania to U.S. trade. Using its global service network, the CMA CGM Group will be able to provide weekly services to and from Australia and New Zealand, Central and South America, the Caribbean, North America (USEC) and Canada. Hamburg Süd Restructures Trident Service

Hamburg Süd announced today that it is restructuring its Trident Service in response to changing market conditions. The changes are designed to bring reduced network costs. Hapag-Lloyd is Restructuring Service

Starting end of April, Hapag-Lloyd will operate their own independent service from Northern Europe via Suez direct to Australia/New Zealand that it used to provide with a partner. “We will be introducing two additional units and continuing to operate the service with twelve ships. With this direct service, we offer the best transit times on this route,” states Anthony Firmin, Managing Director Ship and Container Management of Hapag-Lloyd AG. Carriers Confirm Plans

Six container shipping lines in the Europe-Australasia-North America trade have finalized plans to introduce a new and improved liner service system for their existing operations on the world's longest trade-route. The new system will see five existing services replaced by two fixed-day weekly contra-rotating round-the-world operations. Marfret and P&ONedlloyd. All six carriers will continue to compete with each other and market their services independently. New Zealand Works To Fix NZ Refining's Clog Up

New supplies of diesel would be in place at all New Zealand marine fueling stations by Friday, replacing stocks of fuel affected by an additive that clogs engine filters, NZ Refining Co. said on Tuesday. Many New Zealand fishing boats have been kept in port by the fuel scare while motorists were also reporting problems, because of an additive inserted at NZ Refining's refinery, which affected 350 million liters of diesel that had been produced since March; The company supplies more than 90 percent of New Zealand's diesel fuel. The additive is designed to help fuel flow in cold temperatures but instead can block up diesel engine fuel filters.
