Tugboat Captain Medevaced in Brownsville, Texas

An ailing tugboat captain was medevaced in Brownsville, Texas, Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi command center received a medevac request at 7:16 a.m. via VHF Channel 16 from the crew of the El Zorro Grande, a tugboat transiting outbound on the Brownsville ship channel, stating the captain had passed out, officials said.A Coast Guard Station South Padre Island 33-foot Special Purpose Craft – Law Enforcement boat crew launched to assist with a duty corpsman aboard.The SPC-LE crew arrived on scene, embarked the 49-year-old tug master, and transported him to awaiting emergency medical services at an oil dock in Port Isabel, Texas, the Coast Guard said.A Brownsville pilot, who was aboard at the time, maneuvered the St.

Tug Allision Causes Diesel Spill in Texas

U.S. Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi and the Texas General Land Office are responding to an oil spill at mile marker 667 on the Intracoastal Waterway near Port Isabel, Wednesday. Watchstanders at Sector Corpus Christi received a report that the uninspected towing vessel Capt. Jim Green allided with a dock at the Subsea 7 facility, releasing approximately 20,000 gallons of low sulfur diesel fuel into the waterway at 11:24 p.m., Tuesday. A Unified Command consisting of the Coast Guard, Texas General Land Office and Kirby Inland Marine has been established in response to the allision and diesel spill. Miller Environmental, an oil spill response organization, is currently on scene conducting air monitoring and oil recovery operations. The source of the spill has been secured.

Texas LNG appoints BNP Paribas as financial adviser for Brownsville LNG project, progresses FERC pre-filing process and completes over 60 percent of front end engineering and Design for facility. Texas LNG Brownsville LLC announced that BNP Paribas has been appointed as financial adviser for the Brownsville project. BNP Paribas will assist Texas LNG in the raising of equity and debt financing for the total capital requirements of the Project, including the execution of definitive transaction documents for achieving final investment decision (FID) and project construction.

NOAA: US to See More Floods from Sea Level Rise

Most of U.S. coast may see 30 or more days a year of floods up to 2 feet above high tides. By 2050, a majority of U.S. coastal areas are likely to be threatened by 30 or more days of flooding each year due to dramatically accelerating impacts from sea level rise, according to a new NOAA study, published in the American Geophysical Union’s online peer-reviewed journal Earth’s Future. Coast Guard Forces Back Illegal Mexican Fisherman

A patrolling Coast Guard aircrew spotted, pursued and compelled a lancha across the U.S./Mexican border, Friday, after the lancha was spotted poaching in U.S waters. At 2:30 p.m., a Coast Guard aircrew aboard an HU-25 Falcon aircraft spotted the 25-foot lancha fishing 45 miles offshore of Port Isabel and 7 miles north of the U.S./Mexican border. The aircrew immediately notified Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi, and pursued the vessel south, forcing it across the border. The Coast Guard Cutter Cobia, an 87-foot coastal patrol boat, also pursued the lancha, but was unable to intercept it. The Cobia is currently searching for any longline gear the lancha may have laid. The Coast Guard is continuing its efforts in conjunction with Operation Sea Serpent.

Texas Boats Combat Drug Cartels on the Rio Grande

Texas Marine Unit Uses Yellowfin-built Shallow Water Vessels for Border Patrol missions. Menaced by Mexican drug cartels, the Texas Department of Public Safety operates a fleet of six shallow-water vessels it commissioned in late 2011 and 2012 to patrol its borders. Delta Towing, Signet Maritime Alliance Ink Contract for Port Isabel Support

Delta Towing LLC and Signet Maritime Corporation began work on a period contract to the Texas Department of Transportation with four tugboats and three barges, providing navigational support to the ferryboat system between Port Isabel and Padre Island. The problems resulting from collision damage to the Queen Isabella Causeway on September 15 required a new ferry system be in place with tugboat and barge landing operations implemented providing for safety of ferry navigation to and from the two ports. According to Delta Towing President, Bucky Monteiro, the primary objective of the partnership between these three entities will be Safety First. The main operations center will be under direction of Captain Scott Cowan, based in Signet’s Brownsville office.

65th Anniversary: The Tugboat, Towboat and Barge Industry

This year, The American Waterways Operators (AWO), the national trade association for the tugboat, towboat and barge industry, celebrates its 60th anniversary. AWO members, representing the inland, coastal and harbor sectors of the industry, recently marked this milestone at its Spring Convention, recalling the reasons for the association's founding and recognizing the remarkable evolution of the industry over the past six decades. AWO was formed in 1944 in the midst of emerging regulations, priorities and demands for transportation during World War II. Today, AWO members account for 80 percent of the towing industry's active fleet.

Cutter Sweetgum To Be Decommissioned

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sweetgum will be decommissioned after nearly 60 years of service in a ceremony scheduled Wednesday, September 19, at 2:00 p.m. at Coast Guard Group Mobile in Mobile, Ala. The Sweetgum was commissioned into the Coast Guard November 20, 1943, and was briefly homeported in Grand Haven, Mich. The Sweetgum moved to Mayport, Fla., September 1, 1946 where it proudly served for years 44 years. While stationed in Mayport, the Sweetgum was responsible for maintaining 333 buoys and structures from Kings Bay, Ga., to the Bahamas. In the winter of 1977, the Sweetgum was ordered north to open up shipping routes, free frozen-in-ships, and help clean up a 400,000 gallon oil spill in New York’s Hudson River.
