German-based cargo container shipping line Hapag-Lloyd AG is launching a new liner service offering a direct connection between Turkey and the US East Coast.The Turkey North America East Coast (TNE) service will operate every nine days between the Turkish seaport of Marmara (Izmit, Istanbul and Gemlik) and the US ports of New York, Norfolk and Savannah, said a press release from the world's fifth largest container carrier in terms of vessel capacity.In addition, the service will also offer an excellent connection between Turkey and the US East Coast and the Egyptian port of Alexandria.The port of Algeciras in southern Spain will serve as the transshipment hub for cargo.

Terex Port Solutions (TPS) received an order for six diesel-electric Terex rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTG) from Alexandria Container and Cargo Handling Co. (ACCHCO), Egypt. The machines will be operated inthe Alexandria Container Terminal and the El-Dekheila Container Terminal ofthe country’s main port, Port of Alexandria. It is one of the world's most important trade ports: the Egyptian port of Alexandria, a metropolis of some 4 million inhabitants. Located right on the western end of the Nile Delta, the port handles container and cruise vessels bound for the Suez Canal. Following the opening of the Suez Canal expansion in August, Egypt is hoping for a significant increase in transiting vessels. The Port Authority has placed orders for a total of four new additional port tugs equipped with Voith Schneider Propellers (VSP) with two Egyptian shipyards.

Greek authorities have seized a freighter carrying an undeclared shipment of weapons en route from Turkey to Libya, coast guard officials said on Wednesday. A coast guard patrol boat raided the vessel on Tuesday, 20 nautical miles northeast of Crete. The freighter, with a crew of seven and which had sailed from the Turkish port of Iskenderun, was escorted to Heraklion port on the island. The United Nations has imposed an embargo on weapons shipments to Libya, which is plagued by factional conflict. "The ship's crew is being questioned and the content of its containers will be checked," a coast guard official said, declining to be named. The coast guard provided no further details of what kind of arms the freighter had on board, or its ownership.

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has received an order to retrofit both electrically and mechanically two ship-to-shore (STS) cranes for Alexandria Container & Cargo Handling Co. (ACCHCO) at the Port of Alexandria, Egypt. The order was signed into Cargotec's 2015 second quarter order intake, and the project is planned to be completed by the end of 2015. The value of the order is approximately $3.9 million. The cranes, originally supplied by Cerretti Tanfany, have been operational since 1995. The cranes will be fully refurbished both electrically and mechanically, replacing the most critical components in order to extend the lifetime of the cranes. The works include the replacement of the current spreaders by Bromma spreaders that will be supplied as part of the retrofit works.

The Alexandria Port Authority has placed an order for four new Voith Water Tractors (VWT) to be built at different shipyards in Egypt. Two tugs with an engine power of 2 x 1,920 kW each will be propelled by two Voith Schneider Propellers VSP 28R5/210-2. They will achieve a Bollard Pull of at least 55 tons. The other two with a power of 2 x 1,370 kW each are to be equipped with two VSP 26R5/195-2 for a Bollard Pull of at least 40 tons. A repair ship began work at the site where an Internet cable was cut last week in the Persian Gulf, and a second vessel was to arrive later that day at the spot north of Egypt where two other cables were cut just two days earlier, FLAG Telecom said. The cuts have disrupted Internet services across a large swath of the Middle East and India, slowing down businesses and hampering personal Internet usage. There has been wide speculation that the cuts were caused by ships' anchors dragged along the bottom of the sea in stormy weather. But Egypt's telecommunication ministry said Sunday no ships were registered near the location when the first cut in the cables occurred, north of the Egyptian port of Alexandria. The Egyptian statement further deepened the enigma of how the damage happened.

Lockheed Martin will provide the Arab Republic of Egypt with a fully integrated maritime search and rescue (SAR) system for the Gulf of Suez (GOS) under a $50 million contract signed today in Cairo. The SAR system will complement the Gulf of Suez Vessel Traffic Information Management System (VTIMS) provided by Lockheed Martin under a 1998 contract and provide the Egyptian Ministry of Transport with all the necessary capabilities to manage and respond to any maritime distress in the Gulf of Suez. Libya has begun to release 149 Egyptian fishermen detained for the past month on suspicion of fishing illegally in Libyan waters, a foreign ministry official said on Thursday. Mohamed Abbas, Assistant Minister for Consulate Affairs, Immigration and Egyptians Abroad, said 26 of the fishermen, including 11 boys, had been freed and the rest would be released as soon as their families paid an undisclosed amount of bail that Libyan authorities were demanding. Libyan authorities seized eight fishing boats based in Egypt's Mediterranean port of Alexandria at the end of October and arrested their crews for trespassing and fishing in Libya's waters without a license. It was the latest in a series of incidents involving Egyptian fishermen detained off the Libyan coast.
