Israeli Port Work Starts, Haifa Longshoremen strike
A Chinese construction firm began work on a new Mediterranean port in Israel on Tuesday, prompting a strike at Haifa docks further up the coast where the workers oppose the new competition. Israel's government, looking to break up the monopoly of two state-owned ports in Haifa and Ashdod through which nearly all exports and imports pass, recently approved creating private ports adjacent to the current ones. The move, it says, will bring down the cost of goods across the board. A subsidiary of China Harbour Engineering Co is building the 3.3 billion shekel ($876 million) port in Ashdod, which is due to be completed in 2020. The port's operator has not been chosen and the contract for Haifa has yet to be awarded.
Israel Seaport Shut When Workers Stage Slowdown
(Reuters) - Israel's Haifa seaport, one of the country's main trade arteries, has been shut indefinitely after management told employees involved in a work slowdown to stay home. Since last week, workers at the port on Israel's northern Mediterranean coast have been operating cranes that load and unload 11 to 13 containers an hour - well below its normal 30 containers an hour, a spokesman at the port said. "The port will not reopen until we get a strong declaration from the union that workers will work at full force," he said on Monday, the first day of the closure. He said ships were either going to Israel's other main port in Ashdod further south or stopping in Cyprus, Greece and Italy and eventually make their way to Israel.
Supply and Demand: Asia-Med
Asia/Med peak season started badly as cargo growth from Asia to the Mediterranean was poor in June, which is an ominous sign for the rest of this year’s peak season. Containerized exports from Asia to the Mediterranean rose by only 1% between May and June, up to 415,000,000 teu, which does not auger well for the rest of the peak season. As the market is partly driven by tourism, much has to be in place before the end of August. The Eastern and Western Mediterranean regions were as poor as each other.
