Morocco Considers Onshore, Offshore Options for LNG Import Facility

FSRU: Morocco Picks Mohammedia for Potential Floating Gas Facility

Morocco has invited bids to perform a study for the upgrade of Mohammedia port near Casablanca to host a liquified natural gas (LNG) floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), the Moroccan ports agency said on Tuesday.The deadline for bids has been set at Jan. 25, the agency said on its website.Energy minister Leila Benali last month said that her department was examining financial and gas supply details for a future FSRU that would guarantee all of Morocco’s gas needs.Algieria ended gas supplies to Morocco on Oct.

Kongsberg GlobalSim Install World's Largest Crane Simulator

The company reports completion of a multi-year project to build and install the world's largest crane training simulator for the National Ports Agency of Morocco. The simulator uses a 10-meter dome and 12 projectors to create an immersive virtual training environment in which ANP's crane operators can safely and effectively learn to operate new equipment. As the simulator is integrated into its training regimen, ANP expects to dramatically reduce both the training time required to produce competent operators and the number of accidents caused by poor handling of heavy port equipment.

Strike Paralyzes Casablanca Port

A strike by approximately 3,000 civil servants and dockworkers stretched into its sixth day Tuesday, and continued to halt operations at Morocco's main port of Casablanca. The stoppage at the port, which handles 70 percent of the country's cargo traffic, began last Thursday after unions accused the state-run ports authority ODEP of back-tracking on an agreement over pay hikes and other benefits. According to the unions, about 50 vessels have been unable to unload. A senior ODEP official said the port authority was holding talks with workers' representatives to end the strike. He declined to give further details.

VT Halmatic Gets Pilot Boat Order

VT Halmatic won an order to manufacture a Halmatic Nelson 29 pilot boat for the Port of Casablanca in Morocco. The new 9.22m semi-displacement craft will join Casablanca’s existing fleet of Halmatic Nelson 35 pilot boats. Power is provided by a single Volvo Penta TAMD 63L producing 172 bkW (235mhp) @ 2500 RPM driving conventional stern gear for a service speed of 17.5 knots. The hull and superstructure mouldings will be produced by VT Halmatic’s partner Seaward Marine on the Isle of Wight then the mouldings will be transferred to VT Halmatic’s Portchester Shipyard for fitout and trials. Delivery is due in the second quarter of 2006.

OTAL’s North Africa Feeder Service Hailed a Success

OT Africa Line (OTAL), the specialist West African shipping line, has undergone service schedule restructuring as from mid June of this year: 80 percent of its African port range now sees OTAL call on a weekly basis. The implementation of the OTAL-managed weekly North Africa feeder service (NFD), for example, has already created marked improvements in terms of port congestion avoidance and improved sailing frequencies for customers. The North Africa feeder service operates two 400 TEU vessels, providing a weekly service on the Dakar – Banjul – Nouakchott – Casablanca rotation.
