Potential Maritime Disaster Averted

Collaboration between the Ports of East London and Ngqura, together with the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), helped avert another potential maritime disaster in the Eastern Cape during the past week. Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) towed the BBC Shanghai, a 101 meter long general cargo vessel with 11 crew members on board, safely into the Port of East London on Friday, March 17, after she suffered engine failure en route from Durban to Lagos. South Africa Ports Gear Up for Cruise Season

South Africa’s ports are ramping up for a bumper cruise season with at least eight luxury cruise lines and over ten passenger vessels of varying sizes set to ferry international and domestic tourists across the country’s port cities. The South African cruise season kicked off officially in October with a number of smaller vessels already having called at South Africa’s ports. They are en route to and from travel hotspots in Africa, Europe, the Far East, the Mediterranean, South America and more. However the MSC SINFONIA – a cruise ship in the local cruise calendar – marked a highlight in the 2015/16 cruise calendar when she arrived in her homeport of Durban in the early hours of Thursday, November 19. This was her first South African call this season.

Largest Car Carrier Ever to Sail into East London

Laden with a consignment of luxury vehicles for the South Africa market, the 231 metre ship mv Tijuca became the largest car carrier ever to sail into the Port of East London. The vessel is on its maiden voyage to the country with ports of call including Port Elizabeth and Durban. In East London the 13 deck ship took advantage of a recent expansion project which saw the berth at the car terminal deepened from 9.3 to 10.5 metres to accommodate larger vessels. East London Port Manager Jacqueline Brown said the vessel’s call highlighted the positive outlook in the new vehicles market.

Ngumbe Becomes First Female Port Engineer at East London

Growing up in the under-developed Eastern Cape awoke the desire in Sibongile Ngumbe, National Ports Authority’s (NPA) first female Port Engineer, to contribute to improving the lives of people in the region. With her recent appointment in this position at the Port of East London, she is now set to realise her vision of making a difference, by further developing the motor hub port. Mammoet Gets Salvage Order

Mammoet Salvage of Schiedam, the Netherlands, agreed to terms for the removal of the wreck of the Liberian container ship, Safmarine Agulhas, which ran aground and broke in half in the South African port of East London. The operation will be carried out in South Africa in the coming months. Since starting its activities on January 1, 2006, Mammoet Salvage has completed ten salvage operations of varying sizes. Salvaging this wreck is the most extensive, specialized job yet. The insurers issued a call for tenders, inviting international salvage companies to submit plans for dismantling and removing the wreckage quickly, safely, professionally and – in particular – in an environmentally-friendly manner.
