ABP, Thor Shipping Sign New Port of Hull Contract

Associated British Ports (ABP) announced a major new agreement which sees Dutch shortsea specialist Thor Shipping & Transport commit 10 years to The Port of Hull.In addition, ABP has invested GBP6 million into Thor’s 10-acre leased terminal, allowing substantial infrastructure improvement works and an additional 2.5 acres of container storage space. As part of this key investment, in March 2019, a hybrid £3.5 million Liebherr harbour crane will arrive, to bolster eco-friendly operations for many years to come.Since July 2014 Thor has trebled its tonnage through the two-berth terminal on King George Dock. It has a regular container and breakbulk service from its own short sea operator - Sunline - connecting the UK with the East Coast of Sweden twice a week.

ABP Wins Hornsea One Blade Contract

Spanish manufacturing company Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has contracted Associated British Ports (ABP) to provide storage for 37 of its wind turbine blades destined for the Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm.The UK's port group said  UK's leading ports group said that to accommodate the expanding business of the leading wind turbine blade manufacturer, a six-acre area located at the Port of Hull's Eastern Access, on King George Dock, is now being leased for the storage of the 75 metre, 30 tonne blades.David Morriss, ABP Humber Head of Property, said: "We're proud to be able to say that we have been an essential link in a major green project such as this, which will eventually see the blades powering one-million homes.

Samskip Introduces New Shortsea Route to Antwerp,UK.

Samskip is launching a new shortsea service connecting Antwerp and Hull, in an expansion of its continent-UK multimodal network that also sees it debut at Belgium’s largest port.The intermodal logistics company  said in a press release that the initial schedule offers a twice weekly short sea container service, with its first departure from Antwerp on the 12th October.The service will be operated by a 508TEU capacity vessel, sailing from ATO's multimodal terminal on Tuesday and Saturday and ABP Port of Hull on Thursday and Monday.This new connection is in addition to Samskip's existing shortsea services connecting Rotterdam with Tilbury, Hull and Grangemouth (eight per week) and the recent three times weekly Amsterdam-Hull service.

MSC Alexandra, VLCC Dream Collided in Singapore Strait

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore says it was notified just before midnight yesterday (Aug 4) of a collision involving Dream II VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) and MSC Alexandra (Container Ship)  in the Singapore Strait, about 3 km South-East of Sebarok Island. Both are Panama-flagged vessels. Prior to the incident, MPA's Port Operations Control Centre provided traffic information and alerted the shipmasters of Dream II and MSC Alexandra of the risk of collision. Dream II sustained damage to her bow whilst MSC Alexandra sustained damages on her port quarter hull. Both vessels are in stable condition and safely anchored in Singapore. MSC Alexandra reported that 10 empty containers fell overboard during the incident, 4 onto the deck of Dream II and the rest into the water.

New Pilot Boat Delivered to Sabine Pilots

Sabine Pilots in Port Arthur, Texas has received a new all-aluminum pilot boat, Port Arthur. With a deep-V hull designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates, the Chesapeake class pilot boat was built by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation of Somerset, Mass. The vessel measures 53.6 feet overall, with a 17.8-foot beam and a 4.8-foot draft. The launch is powered by twin Caterpillar C-18s diesels, each rated at 715 Bhp at 2,100 rpm. Loaded top speed is 28 knots. The engines turn five-blade NiBrAl propellers via Twin Disc MGX-5135A Quick Shift gear boxes.

Port of Hull Opens Multi-purpose Warehouse

Investment of more than £4 million in a purpose-built facility for the storage of dry bulk cargoes has given Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Hull a pioneering multi-purpose warehouse facility which will be used to store biomass. The building, which took almost a year to construct, boasts a range of features which makes it the only one of its kind in operation in the UK. KSB Valves Used in Costa Concordia Salvage

Over three hundred ISORIA pneumatically actuated butterfly valves have been supplied by the KSB Group for use in the salvaging of the cruise ship Costa Concordia, which capsized off Giglio Island on January 13, 2012. The role of the 328 valves is to fill and vent tanks located in the sponsons (giant steel boxes), the first 15 of which were welded to the port-side hull to act as ballasting bodies when righting the wreck. At a later stage, these sponsons, together with another 15 to be installed on the star-board side of the cruise ship, will be flooded and used to stabilize the wreck.

Wind Farm Base Project Gets UK Local Green Light

Hull City Council’s Planning Committeehas given its consent to the proposed Green Port Hull facility following the submission of plans by Associated British Ports (ABP) and Siemens plc. The German manufacturer, which will invest about £80m, plans to have the site operational by 2014, in time to start making turbines ahead of the first UK Round 3 projects. Crowley's Ed Schlueter Announces Retirement

Ed Schlueter will retire on December 31, 2011, after 35 years with Crowley. He started with the company as a Port Engineer (Hull) in Seattle and is currently Vice President, Vessel Management Services, Inc. (VMSI). Over the years, Ed has held numerous positions, including Engineering Project Manager, Manager of Engineering, and Director of Engineering. He has lived in Seattle, Jacksonville, Copenhagen and California. Ed has been involved with and overseen the delivery of nearly 70 new building projects at Crowley.

McAusland & Turner Choose HOTA's Albert Dock as Training Site

HOTA (Humberside Offshore Training Association Ltd) and McAusland & Turner Ltd have joined forces to create a bespoke Vessel Familiarization Course utilizing the facilities at HOTA’s Albert Dock site in Hull. Established in 1888, McAusland & Turner is the oldest Marine Surveying and Consulting firm in continuous operation in the Port of Hull. The company set up the three day Vessel Familiarization Course in 1994, with an aim of providing people working within the marine industry the opportunity to visit working vessels trading in today’s world. Throughout the 17-year course history, over 500 national and international delegates have attended training. McAusland & Turner approached HOTA in 2011 to discuss collaboration with the aim of adding realism to possible scenarios.

Geo Shipyard Delivers to USACE

The Redlinger and the Elton, both 60-ft Hysucraft (hydrofoil supported catamarans), are survey vessel sister ships designed and built for the United States Army Corps of Engineers. They are serving the Portland Oregon district. Redlingers mission is in Portland along the Columbia River. Eltons mission is in Astoria and out to the Columbia Bar. The vessels have a top speed of 35knots with a cruising speed of 30 knots at 80% power. They can survey at up to 15 knots but typically their work is done at 10 knots. The vessels are designed by Viking Fast Craft Solutions, LLC., Staunton Ill.

Port Weller Christens Two Ships in One Day

For the first time in the shipyard’s five-decade history, two ships were christened on the same day at Port Weller Dry Docks in St. Catharines. The vessels, Hull 79 and Hull 516, were renamed and welcomed at a ceremony at the yard on March 3. The third of three CSL vessels to have forebody replacements at Port Weller, Hull 79, which was sponsored by Kimberley Pauley, wife of Capt. Steve Pauley, is the last part of a $100 million contract with Canadian Shipbuilding & Engineering. In addition to a completely new hull, which has been attached to the engine room portion of the former MV Louis R. Demarais, Hull 79 also boasts automated self-unloading equipment. Hull 79 also holds the distinction as one of the largest ships on the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence waterway, at SeawayMax size.

ABP Locks Long-Term Deal With P&O

Associated British Ports Holdings Plc (ABP) agreed to a long-term deal with P&O North Sea Ferries for the provision of a new state-of-the-art passenger terminal at the Port of Hull in north England. The terminal will accommodate the world's largest super-cruise ferries, being built by Italian shipbuilders Fincantieri, which are due to be delivered in April and December 2001.
