Ocean Towing with Z-Drives

Western Towboat leads the way with tractor tugs. For a first-hand look at how tractor tugs are used for ocean towing on the West Coast, I took a ride on the first Titan class vessel built by Western Towboat out of Seattle, Wash. The 108-ft Western Titan was built in 1997 with stern Azimuth drives. She pulls a container barge the size of a football field on a tow line from Seattle to Skagway, Alaska, making several port calls along the way and traveling through both the inside passage and waters more open to the Pacific Ocean.

Cruise Companies Cited For Excessive Smoke

Seven cruise companies have been cited for pumping excessive amounts of smokestack emissions into the air of Alaska's capital city, state officials said. Observers hired by the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) found that 11 ships violated state smoke-opacity standards when they were docked in port in Juneau between mid-July and mid-August, officials said. Companies accused of the smokestack violations, which allegedly blotted out the coastal scenery, were Princess Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America Line, World Explorer, Crystal Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruise Lines and Carnival Cruise Lines. The agency plans to send its information onto the state Attorney General's office for a legal response…

Coast Guard Continues Spill Investigation

Investigators from the Coast Guard marine safety office here are continuing to look into what caused a Holland America cruise ship to spill partially treated wastewater into Gastineau Channel here August 17. The Juneau Harbormaster contacted the Coast Guard around 8 p.m. August 17 reporting that a brownish color substance discharged form the Ryndam. Coast Guard MSO Juneau investigators responded to the scene immediately and took samples of the discharge flowing from the Ryndam. Preliminary findings suggest that roughly 40,000 gallons of wastewater from sinks, showers and the sewage system transferring into the number six portside double bottom holding tank exceeded capacity, and subsequently discharged out a vent and into Alaska waters.
