The Port of Koper operator in Slovenia, Luka Koper d.d., has ordered five electric Konecranes RTG cranes. The cranes will be equipped with cable reels featuring an auto plug-in system.They will be delivered in the summer of 2019. The contract was signed in June and the order was booked in Q2 2018.Luka Koper’s new Konecranes RTGs will offer important environmental benefits thanks to their electric operation: regenerative power feedback to the local grid, ambient lighting with LED lights and low noise.The cranes will also have driver-assistance features that boost productivity: Auto-steering, Auto-TOS reporting, Auto-positioning, and Stack Collision Prevention. “Luka Koper has been our customer for over fourteen years.

At the assembly of  North Adriatic Ports Association (NAPA) the port of Koper, Dragomir Matić, president of Luka Koper took the half-year presidency of the NAPA association. As emphasized at the meeting of representatives of the ports, it is crucial that all ports continue investing in new facilities and strengthen the market position of the entire Adriatic transport route. Cosco has decided to transfer its containers to the port of Koper in Slovenia from Piraeus in order to deal with the Greek railway strikes. Cosco has got around the problem created for its freight forwarding network by Greek railway workers’ ongoing strike action by sending its containers by sea from Piraeus to Koper in Slovenia, from where they are loaded onto trains for the next part of their journey, reports Kathimerini. Since the tariffs for small feeder ships are currently at very low levels, the Chinese company will be able to bypass the central Greek railway axis without major losses in competitiveness. In their “Best route market study for containerised imports to South Germany”, published at the beginning of March, the Drewry Group’s supply-chain consultants investigated via which ports containers imported from Shanghai can be transported fastest and cheapest to southern Germany, i.e. Munich, Freiburg, Stuttgart, Ulm and Nuremberg. In almost all markets under consideration, Hamburg comes out better than Rotterdam, Antwerp and the southern ports in the Mediterranean. Contributing to this are numerous direct services, a high departure frequency for container block trains and the fast transit times to/from the Hamburg quay wall. Across the North Range a total of 16 Far East liner services are currently on offer from the major container shipping lines.

In 2015 around 295,000 TEU – 20-ft standard containers – were transported between the Port of Hamburg and intermodal terminals in Austria by rail. That represents a 9.3 percent gain, setting a new record for Hamburg’s seaport-hinterland services with Austria. Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT), International Container Terminal Services, Inc.’s (ICTSI) container handling facility in the Port of Rijeka, Croatia, recently serviced the largest vessel to call in the country, the 10,000 TEU-capacity Gerda Maersk. The 367-meter Gerda Maersk, is part of the 2M Alliance by two of the world’s megaliners Maersk and Mediterranean Shipping Co. The alliance, which connects Rijeka and the Far East, deploys 15 vessels with average capacities of 9,600 to 11,300 TEUs. The service starts from the US West Coast and passes through the Pacific, making regular port calls in Busan, South Korea and key ports in the Far East…

The European Union will support with almost €2 million from the TEN-T Program a study looking at the potential beneficial effects of using alternative fuels for port operations. The study, which will include pilots in Spain, Slovenia and Italy, will especially look at the ways to improve environmental performance of the participating ports’ container terminals. The project, which was selected for funding under the 2011 TEN-T Annual Call, will study and test new technologies and alternative fuels in the ports of Valencia (Spain), Koper (Slovenia) and Livorno (Italy) to try and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from these ports container terminal operations. The project will be managed by the Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency and is set to be completed by May 2014.

The Adriatic ports of Venice, Trieste, Ravenna, Ancona and Monfalcone in Italy and the port of Koper in Slovenia will collaborate in producing a study which will be co-financed by the EU with €1 million from the TEN-T Multi-Annual Call, to create an integrated multi-port gateway capable of improving cargo interoperability and fostering co-modality. The study is focused on the development of a multimodal and multiport gateway, connecting the Adriatic ports to mainland logistic platforms in their respective countries, as well as supporting the development of strategic links by sea between the Mediterranean and Black Sea areas, based in particular on MoS corridors.

Spanish builder Astilleros Armón recently delivered one tug boat powered by two MAN 7L27/38 four-stroke engines and is close to delivering another powered by two similar 9L27/38 engines. The vessels are bound for separate companies of the Italian ‘Ocean Group’. The first project involved the construction of the ‘Neptun’, a Voith-Schneider Tractor Tug constructed at Astilleros Armón Navia in Asturias, Spain as construction C-701. The vessel is powered by two MAN 7L27/38 engines, each developing 2,380 kW at 800 rpm, and was launched in February 2011 with delivery to Adria Tow of Slovenia following in June. Adria Tow was founded in 1992 and provides vessel towing services in the Port of Koper, the largest commercial port on the Slovenian Adriatic coast.

In 2002 Rotterdam was Austria's most important port for the fifth time in a row, with a throughput of 3.5 million tons. This was 9.6% more as compared to 2001. The marketshare rose slightly to 35.6%.
