Lerwick Welcomes its Largest Ever Cruise Vessel
June 30 was a big day for GAC UK’s Shetlands office, as Offshore Manager Adrian Henry welcomed the P&O Cruises ship Azura to the port of Lerwick, the islands’ capital and home to GAC’s local office. The 115,055t Azura is the largest ever cruise vessel to have called at the port, and Henry and his team were responsible for ensuring every second of her time there went without a hitch for her 3,033 passengers and 1,159 crew, GAC said. “The Azura is even bigger than the 114,288t Costa Pacifica which called here in June 2011,” said Fergus Poole, GAC UK’s Cruise Manager.

Statsraad Lehmkuhl's 100th Visit to Lerwick Port
As part of a Whitsunday voyage from Bergen to Shetland, the crew and trainees will be treated to a celebratory welcome from harbour tugs Knab and Kebister when the ship arrives at Lerwick on Friday morning. Later that evening, Captain Marcus Seidl will host a reception for invited guests in the ship’s quarterdeck to mark this special occasion, with a presentation being made by Lerwick Port Authority. The ship’s 2016 itinerary includes six visits to Lerwick comprising Navy charters, sail training experiences for trainees and Norwegian student exchange trips. The ship has called at Lerwick every year since 1988 and its seasonal visits are now a regular feature on the port’s annual calendar.
Activity at Lerwick Harbor - Forecast
Increases in cargo, passengers and mackerel landings helped the Port of Lerwick achieve forecast traffic levels in the half-year to June, 2014, compared with the same period in 2013. The total for all cargoes handled at the port rose 8%, with combined ferry and cruise passengers jumping 13.8%. The number of vessel arrivals, at 2,230, was down 11%, mainly due to a decrease in fishing vessels – also reflected in white fish landings which declined due to bad weather in the early part of the year, vessel refits and boats on charter to the oil industry. The tonnage of vessels at 5.5 million gross tonnes was down 10%, principally due to an expected decrease in offshore industry bulk carriers/pipe-burying vessels compared with project work last year.
A Summer Of Sailing At Lerwick Harbor
Lerwick Harbor is set to cast off for a summer of sailing with a series of local and international events attracting several hundred crew, beginning this week with the arrival of entrants in the Round Britain & Ireland Yacht Race. Sandra Laurenson, Lerwick Port Authority Chief Executive, said: ”The harbour will again be playing host to a number of sailing enthusiasts, many of them repeat visitors, meeting and competing in the established races and underlining the popularity of the port and Shetland with yachting crews. • The Round Britain & Ireland Yacht Race, operated by the Royal Western Yacht Club and held every four years, with the 13 remaining entries en route clockwise around Britain and Ireland from a start in Plymouth on 1 June.
Cruise Ship Arrivals Set New Shetland Island Port Record
Lerwick Harbour, Shetland Islands, Scotland, logs best cruise season yet, with number of vessels visiting setting four new records. 37,572 passengers, topping the previous highest figure of 30,843 in 2010. 52 cruise ships, beating last year’s record of 50. 1,531,097 gross tonnes of shipping, up on the previous record of 1,220,455 gross tonnes in 2010. 3,105 passengers on a single vessel at Lerwick - Costa Pacifica, on 2 July, passing her previous record of 3,007 in June, 2011.
