Bumi Armada, Shapoorji Pallonji JV to Set Up FSRU in Mumbai Harbour

DP World Asks Court to Halt Antitrust Probe at Mumbai Port

Dubai's DP World has asked an Indian court to halt an investigation into alleged antitrust violations at the country's largest container port in Mumbai, saying the regulator was seeking excessive information, a court document seen by Reuters showed.The Competition Commission of India (CCI) last year said it suspected antitrust violations by DP World and Denmark's A.P. Moller-Maersk at the terminals they operate at state-owned Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).The CCI's investigation followed a complaint by Singapore's PSA International Pte Ltd, which alleged that Maersk and DP World businesses created barriers to hinder the growth of PSA's terminal by colluding on certain charges they levy at JNPT.In December, a Mumbai high court declined a DP World plea to quash the investigation.

India to Probe Alleged Antitrust Behavior by Maersk, DP World at Mumbai Port

India's antitrust regulator has ordered a probe into alleged anti-competitive practices by Denmark's A.P. Moller-Maersk and Dubai's DP World at the terminals they operate at the country's largest container port in Mumbai, five sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.The decision by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to investigate follows a complaint by Singapore's PSA International Pte Ltd, which alleged that Maersk and DP World created entry barriers to hinder the growth of PSA's terminal by colluding on certain charges they levy at the state-owned Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).Handling 66 million tonnes of cargo in the last fiscal year to March, JNPT is critical to India's international trade.

Tech Mahindra to Manage Indian Ports

Indian Ports Association (IPA) has appointed Tech Mahindra as the Managed Service Provider for five major ports. This is the first such outsourcing deal in the major ports.Tech Mahindra will build and maintain an enterprise business system (EBS) to modernise and automate port processes at five Central government-owned port  at Mumbai ,Kolkata, Chennai, Deendayal Port  and Paradip Port Trust.This initiative is a major step towards integrating the maritime sector and fostering growth and development of major public sector ports in the country.Tech Mahindra is partnering with world class leading players like SAP, Envision, CISCO, Dell, RTCom and other major players.

Robert Allan Delivers Two RAmparts 3200 CL Tugs to Ocean Sparkle

In 2011, Ocean Pioneer and Ocean Perfect, the first two RAmparts 3200 CL tugs developed by Robert Allan exclusively for Cheoy Lee Shipyards, Hong Kong were delivered to Ocean Sparkle Limited, the largest Indian tug owning and operating company with more than 80 tugboats under its fleet. Since then, 33 sister tugs of this CL series have been constructed by the same builder for their clients around the world. It is very rewarding to see Ocean Sparkle Limited returned to Cheoy Lee Shipyards, ordering two more units of the same series of this constantly improving design from this highly experienced and competent shipbuilder. The two newly built tugs, Ocean Leader and Ocean Legacy left Hong Kong for their home port of Mumbai recently.

Channel Dredging to Commence in Mumbai

Dredging works for the deepening and widening of the access channel toward Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai, India is scheduled to commence in the coming weeks and last for approximately two years. The dredging will enable the country’ largest container handling port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, to accommodate larger container vessels. Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust awarded the €250 million (approximately $265 million) dredging contract to Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. in joint venture with Jan De Nul. For this project a jumbo trailing suction hopper dredger will be deployed in combination with a jumbo cutter suction dredger and a large backhoe. The areas to be dredged include the 35.5 kilometers long access channel and various turning basins and anchorage areas.

APM Terminals Mumbai Mulls DPD Service

APM Terminals Mumbai, India’s busiest container terminal, has embraced ‘Direct Port Delivery’ (DPD)service initiated by the Indian government as part of its “Ease of Doing Business Program” to enhance India’s access to the global logistics chain. The streamlined Direct Port Delivery protocol can result in substantial savings of time and money for importers by reducing container dwell times after vessel discharge. In the past, import containers were sent to Container Freight Stations (CFS) 1-1.5 days after arriving by vessel. Next, depending on the completion of import procedures and clearances with shipping lines, custom house agents, Customs, consignees and CFS operators, the cargo was then delivered to the end user after an average dwell time of 9- 10 days.

Simatech Begins Coastal Shipping Service in India

Sima Marine, a subsidiary of Dubai-based Simatech Shipping, one of the largest container feeder servicing companies in the world operating 54 ships, has launched coastal container shipping services in India. The coastal container shipping service will operate from Kochi connecting Mangalore in Karnataka, Goa and Mundra in Gujarat. Simatech Shipping is one of the largest container feeder servicing companies in the world operating 54 ships with partners, including 15 of its own. For the exclusive coastal service operations in the country, the Indian subsidiary has also acquired two 1,500-TEU container vessels, Sima Godavari and Sima Narmada, which have already started their operations now. APM Terminals Mumbai Introduces Solar Power

On February 1st APM Terminals Senior Vice President Peder Sondergaard officially inaugurated a new solar power initiative at APM Terminals Mumbai, the busiest container terminal at Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP), at the Port of Mumbai, serving India’s commercial and financial hub. As part of the clean solar energy project, solar panels have been installed on the roofs of two terminal structures, and the conversion of energy from collected sunlight into stored electricity has commenced. JNPT Installs ECIL's Radiological Detection Equipment

Cement Terminal likely at Mumbai Port

The Mumbai Port Trust has resolved to create a cement terminal that will cater for the needs of the city of Mumbai. The city of Mumbai consumes approximately 1.25 MMT cement per annum to meet its developmental needs. Currently, this cement is moved by road/rail through neighboring states necessitating entry and exit of nearly 350 trucks per day, congesting the already overstrained city roads. In its bid to decongest the city roads, without affecting the city’s requirement of cement, the Port of Mumbai, which shares 141 years long symbiotic relation with the city of Mumbai, has in its Board meeting on 27.3.2015 resolved to lease 2.5 hectares of its land at Petroleum Godown to M/s. Boxco Moves Longest Column through Mumbai Port

Boxco Logistics has set the bar high yet again, by moving the LONGEST COLUMN EVER that was transported in and out of Mumbai Port. It all started in the industrial township of Dahej in the state of Gujarat at ISGEC Heavy Engineering’s manufacturing plant. The multimodal logistics, involving engineering and execution of transporting the equipment from Dahej to Mumbai for further export to Mexico, were carried by the team at Boxco Logistics. Apart from the C2 Splitter, a 380 MT Quench water tower and a 250 MTDemethaniserwere also to be transported along with their accessories. The transportation of the columns from ISGEC plant to Adani port was a challenge for C2 Splitter which measured 91 m x 9.5 m x 9 m in dimensions.

Port of Mumbai: Monsoon Season & Availability of Anchorages

The foul weather season has been declared from May 25 to August 31, in the Port of Mumbai. During this period, the anchorage area of the [Mumbai] inner harbour is restricted to a line, which is normally north of the Sunk Rock Light House position. Hence, the number of anchorages that can be utilized would be restricted due to non-availability of anchorages to the south of this line. There is a possibility that A-3 anchorage also may not be available. Mumbai Port Trust will try and accommodate as many vessels as possible but may have to deny anchorage facilities due to non-availability of anchorage berths. Risk-Taking Container Terminal Operator Spotlighted

International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) is considered one of the biggest risk takers amongst global container terminal operators. Drewry Maritime Equity Research (DMER) believes that the company is now showing signs of better risk management that will assist in its long term sustainability. The differential in expected container volume growth rates between the developed and emerging markets has led operators to focus attention on emerging market opportunities and seek to rebalance their portfolios. One of the key perceived negatives for ICTSI in the past has been the geopolitical risks associated in some of its investments in economies such as Pakistan, Syria and more recently in Iraq that can provide robust returns.

Nhava Sheva Container Port Partial Shutdown

The container terminal at India's largest port of Nhava Sheva, also known as Jawajarlal Nehru Port near Mumbai, will be partially shut down for six weeks from the beginning of March to install new harbor cranes. The work in expected to impact normal operating conditions alongside the main container berth and the shallow draft berth. Normal operations are expected to recommence in early May. The port authority will not be in a position to operate at full capacity, but are making arrangements with affected vessel operators to find alternate solutions. Shipping lines have been advised to reroute ships to other Indian west coast ports, including Mundra, Pipavav or Hazira. There are two other terminals working in Nhava Sheva, the NSICT and HTI, which are fully working at this time.

DP World Wins Indian Container Terminal Contract

New investment will add 800,000 TEU container capacity & help ease congestion in Port of Mumbai, India. DP World Limited has received a Letter of Award from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Government of India, to build and operate a single berth facility of 330 metres quay length alongside its existing terminal operation at Nhava Sheva, Mumbai. The new facility is expected to be operational in 2015. DP World will be investing approximately $200m to build a container terminal of 330 metres quay length and 17 hectares of yard which will have an annual handling capacity of 800,000 TEUs (twenty foot equivalent container units) and draft of 13.5 metres.

Rickmers Tianjin Named in Mumbai

As part of its upgrading program for its Europe India service, Rickmers-Linie, has added the 17,000dwt newbuilding Rickmers Tianjin to the schedule. The base ports served are Hamburg, Antwerp, Genoa, Mumbai and Chennai but the service is capable of serving a wide variety of additional ports on inducement. Rickmers Tianjin joins her sistership Rickmers Yokohama and the charter ships Linde, Martin and Baltic Winter on the Indian service. On her maiden voyage from Europe, Rickmers Tianjin was named in the Port of Mumbai on 9 January.

Oil Plugged after Cargo Ship Collision off India

According to an August 10 report from the Associated Press, Indian authorities have plugged a fuel leak in a container ship that collided into another cargo vessel and spewed 500 tons of oil into the Arabian Sea. The Panamanian-registered MSC Chitra smashed into the St. Kitts-registered MV-Khalijia-II near Jawahar Lal Nehru port. The accident caused the MSC Chitra to run aground and list heavily. Its fuel and lubricants spilled into the sea. The principal port of Mumbai was to remain closed until at least Wednesday, August 11, because of the spill and 300 cargo containers in the water, causing a navigational hazard. India Loses $12b on Higher Transaction Costs

India loses about $12b each year because of higher transaction costs at its ports, according to MM Saggi, nautical adviser to the government of India. Saggi told an industry conference that the transaction costs at Indian ports is about 10 percent, compared to 6 percent in developed countries, owing to problems like large turnaround time, port congestion, inadequate use of information technology, a shortage of dredging capabilities, and a shortage of trained personnel. has 12 major ports that handled 519 million tonnes of cargo in the year ended March 2008, with 12 percent year-on-year growth, a study by Ernst & Young Pvt. Ltd. shows.
