Sabine Pilots Association Opens New HQ

The Sabine Pilots Association on Monday formally opened its new headquarters located in Port Arthur, TexasThe new structure is designed and built to enable the Sabine Pilots to handle the growth and challenges of expanding shipping demands on their waterway.Present at the opening ceremony were some 500 maritime community stakeholders as well as elected and appointed governmental and port area leaders. Pilot Thomas Logistics Expands Gulf Coast Reach

Horizon Lines Participates in Anti-Piracy Testing

Horizon Lines, Inc., (NYSE:HRZ) , the nation's leading domestic ocean shipping and integrated logistics company, recently participated in two separate anti-piracy system trials in an effort to better protect the lives of merchant mariners. In late July, International Maritime Security Network, LLC (IMSN) conducted safety drills and anti-piracy testing aboard the Horizon Crusader, while the ship docked in Orange, Texas. IMSN completed a test of the 'Triton Shield APS' system of deterrence and training. Included in the system drill were deterrent measures for approaching vessels, physical deterrents for potential unlawful boarders, security and fortification for the crew, and mitigating risk of penetration of the safe area. Training and education of key stakeholders was also conducted.

EMMF Enters Gulf Coast Barge Market

ExxonMobil Marine Fuels (EMMF) announced it is to offer a full range of marine fuels (HFO and MDO) for barge delivery in the ports of Beaumont, Port Neches, Port Arthur, Orange, and the Lake Charles area of the US Gulf Coast. This new service extends EMMF's previous USGC sales capability and improves its global supply network consistent with the efforts to meet the needs of its customers. Joe Rud, Manager of Marketing and Supply for EMMF, said: "This is good news for shipowners who wish to purchase high quality fuel in the US Gulf Coast region. It is also a good example of the combined strengths of ExxonMobil Refinery & Supply, EMMF and our barging partners coming together to expand product availability and services to customers."

ConocoPhillips to Christen New Towboat

The third of four new towboats, which have received American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) classification, will be christened by ConocoPhillips next week. The christening ceremony for Innovator will be held a Port of Orange in Orange, Texas, on May 14, 2003 at 10 a.m. The first two towboats, Spirit and Integrity were christened in January and March respectively. The final vessel, Liberty, will be christened in June. Orange Shipbuilding, built the vessels, which have safety enhancement such as fuel shutdowns, fire detection systems and fire fighting systems. In addition, they are equipped with double-hull fuel tanks and five-blade propellers that are more efficient and reduce hull vibration by as much as 50 percent compared to a conventional four-blade propeller.

ConocoPhillips christened Integrity, the second of four new ABS-classed towboats on March 5 at Port of Orange in Orange, Texas. The first of the towboats, Spirit, was christened in January. Two additional towboats, Liberty and Innovator will be christened in April and May, respectively. Orange Shipbuilding of Orange, Texas, built the vessels, which have safety enhancement such as CO2 extinguishing systems, fuel shutdowns, fire detection systems and fire fighting systems. In addition, they are equipped with double-hull fuel tanks and five-blade propellers that are more efficient and reduce hull vibration by as much as 50 percent compared to a conventional four-blade propeller.

USCG Update After Rita

ST. LOUIS - More than 4,000 Coast Guardsmen continue to save lives and assess the damage to waterways, aids to navigation, the environment and maritime transportation system infrastructure in the wake of Hurricane Rita. To date, the Coast Guard has rescued 120 people imperiled by flood waters and has medically evacuated two others from hospitals in the hurricane-impacted area. Coast Guard rescuers continue to work closely with local and state officials as well as the Department of Defense, to determine the number of people in need of rescue and to ensure help is delivered as swiftly as possible. Two Disaster Response Units (DRUs) were dispatched to the Lake Livingston, Texas, area while three more DRUs were deployed to Port Arthur, Texas, to aid in relief efforts.
