Skanska to Build Offshore Wind Staging Port in Portsmouth, Virginia, USA

Sweden-based Skanska, one of the country's largest construction firms, has signed a contract with the Virginia Port Authority to rebuild 72 acres of the Portsmouth Marine Terminal in Portsmouth, Virginia, USA. Prince of Wales Maiden Visit to Home Port

Queen Elizabeth Welcomes UK’s New Aircraft Carrier

The U.K.’s newest aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth was commissioned into the Royal Navy fleet this morning by Her Majesty The Queen. Serving as the ship's Lady Sponsor, The Queen addressed guests before the ship's Commanding Officer, Captain Jerry Kyd, and read the commissioning warrant at a ceremony in Portsmouth Naval Base. The ceremony, attended by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson and military chiefs, marked the first time the Queen has visited the new warship since the formal naming ceremony in Rosyth in July 2014.

HMS Queen Elizabeth Sets Sail with Dellner Brakes

U.K. Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth arrived at her home port of Portsmouth last week, fitted with two Dellner Brakes ‘stopping, turning, locking’ (STL) systems that, weighing in at 11,000 kg each, are the biggest STL systems that Dellner Brakes has ever built. Each of the carrier’s two propeller shafts is fitted with a custom-designed Dellner Brakes STL system that allows operators to stop, hold and securely lock each shaft independently, and to individually turn the shafts and giant 33 tonne propellers for maintenance and blade assembly.

Theresa May hails HMS Queen Elizabeth

The Royal Navy’s new flagship HMS Queen Elizabeth berthed in her home port of Portsmouth early on Wednesday morning and was greeted Prime Minister Theresa May visited the aircraft carrier and hailed it as a symbol of the UK’s maritime might, said a press release from UK Chamber of Shipping. “Britain truly has the best sailors, marines and officers in the world and I believe that you deserve the very best equipment. That is what we have with HMS Queen Elizabeth. This ship is a symbol of the United Kingdom as a great global, maritime nation,” the prime minister said in an address. “Clearly, she is a stunning piece of twenty-first-century engineering and a true testament to British shipbuilding and design. Six shipyards from across the United Kingdom contributed sections of this vessel.

Boskalis Wins Portsmouth Channel Expansion Order

Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) has been awarded a contract from the Defence Infrastructure Organisation of the Ministry of Defence for the capital dredging of the approach channel to the port of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. The contract has a value of approximately EUR 35 million and the activities are due to commence in the second half of 2015. The dredging activities are related to the deepening and widening of the 7 kilometer long approach channel. A total volume of approximately 3 million cubic meters of hard clay, sand and gravel will be removed over an 8 month period. For this project medium-sized trailing suction hopper dredgers along with backhoe dredgers will be deployed.

Brits Welcome Chinese Navy Fleet

As the largest Chinese Navy fleet visit Britain began a five-day official visit at Royal Naval Base in Portsmouth, United Kingdom, an ecstatic welcome was given by locals, including hundreds of Chinese origin. The dock landing ship Changbaishan, the guided missile frigate Yuncheng and the supply ship Chaohu of the 18th Chinese naval escort taskforce arrived in a naval port in Portsmouth, Britain on the morning of January 12, local time, for a good will visit. The visiting Chinese naval ships were welcomed by more than 800 people including the Chinese Ambassador to UK Liu Xiaoming, representatives of UK-based Chinese, Chinese-funded institutions and overseas Chinese students, as well as the British naval officers and sailors.

HMS Prince of Wales Hull Departs for Rosyth

A huge section of hull for HMS Prince of Wales, the second Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier, has today begun its delivery voyage from HM Naval Base Portsmouth – the future home of the Queen Elizabeth Class. Destroyer Duncan Sets Sails

Duncan, the sixth and final Type 45 destroyer built by BAE Systems, has set sail from the Clyde in preparation for her handover to the U.K. Royal Navy. Duncan set off from the company’s Scotstoun yard with a combined BAE Systems and Royal Navy crew for the 600-mile journey to her new home port of Portsmouth. Duncan: Final Type 45 Destroyer on Sea Trials

DUNCAN, the sixth and final Type 45 destroyer built by BAE Systems, has today set sail from the company’s Scotstoun shipyard on the Clyde to embark on her second stage sea trials off the west coast of Scotland. Dragon (Type 45 Destroyer) Comes Home

Dragon, the fourth Type 45 anti-air warfare destroyer built by BAE Systems for the Royal Navy, has set sail from the Clyde for the final time this week. Dragon set off from the company’s Scotstoun yard this morning, with a combined BAE Systems and Royal Navy crew, as she embarked on the journey to her new home port of Portsmouth. The vessel will be formally handed over to the Royal Navy at a ceremony on Wednesday 31 August. Despite the early start, around 100 employees came to watch as the ship they have worked on since in December 2005 made its final journey down the Clyde.

Daring Handed to Royal Navy

The 442 passenger, fast catamaran Atlanticat was delivered to it’s hailing port of Portsmouth, New Hampshire on Monday, July 21, 2003. The vessel, built for B.B.O., LLC will be operating as Acadian Whale Adventures out of Bar Harbor, Maine and used for off shore whale watching during the summer months and commuter service in Key West, Florida during the winter. The 7,200 hp aluminum catamaran is powered by (4) Cummins KTA-50 engines; ZF4600D gears with (2) Cummins ONAN 95 kW generators supplying the ships service power.

The vessel, built for B.B.O., LLC will be operating as Acadian Whale Adventures out of Bar Harbor, Maine and used for off shore whale watching during the summer months and commuter service in Key West, Fla., during the winter. The 7,200 hp aluminum catamaran is powered by (4) Cummins KTA-50 engines; ZF4600D gears with (2) Cummins ONAN 95 Kw generators supplying the ships service power. The vessel is equipped with (4) Hamilton Jets HM651 Series and SeaState Ride Control enabling the vessel to sail heavy seas. Full load service maximum speed is 35 knots. The vessel was designed by Crowther Multihulls of Australia and is the first large, high-speed catamaran built at the shipyard.
