Port of Salalah, the largest port in Oman, hit an all-time record container volume of 4-million TEUs in December 2019.Considering all services and volumes that were re-directed to other ports due to the impact of Cyclone Mekunu in 2018, the Port of Salalah has also achieved a 19% year-on-year volume growth, said a press note from the port, which is situated in the Dhofar Governorate, on the Arabian Sea which is on the northern part of the Indian Ocean.The concerted efforts of employees and the support of stakeholders have been reinforced by significant incremental capital expenditure as part of the company’s asset replacement and capacity augmentation program.“We are proud of the achievement of the team,” says Mark Hardiman, CEO of Port of Salalah.

With an annual capacity of around 5 million TEU, the Port of Salalah set a new productivity record this month, delivering 412.97 Port Moves per Hour (PMPH) on vessel Cap San Tainaro. The Port handled 3,820 moves in a port stay of 9.25 hours.Oman’s major regional gateway port and transshipment hub, located on the Arabian Sea has recorded the highest productivity ever achieved in the region. A bulk cement carrier that ran aground off beaches of Al-Fazayah Beach, Salalah in Oman has been refloated in one piece and without no damage to the environment, said the company behind the salvage operation, Resolve Marine Group.The partially loaded vessel, RAYSUTT II, departed Port of Salalah in May of last year when the port was evacuated due to adverse weather conditions. U.S. flagged containership Maersk Kensington reported a fire in a cargo hold while en route from Salalah, Oman toward Suez. The fire is the second reported aboard a Maersk vessel this month. The fire has been contained and all 26 crew members are reported safe and accounted for, according to A.P. Moller-Maersk. The vessel is carrying 3,518 containers (corresponding to 5,616 TEU) and is currently at anchor outside the port of Salalah where it is receiving assistance from shore. The 6,188 TEU Maersk Kensington is owned and operated by Maersk’s U.S. subsidiary Maersk Line, Limited (MLL).

The Port of Salalah completed its first ship to ship transfer operation (STST) at Salalah anchorage recently as part of the port’s expanding service offering in 2018. . The new service was performed by Fendercare Marine which transferred vegetable oil between the vessels NCC Nasma to Ariana while both were in the harbor anchorage. Port of Salalah CEO Andrew Dawes said “Our vision is to make our customer’s supply chains work better, more efficiently and safer. Our new offering of ship to ship transfer of bulk liquids is designed to serve the regional market and Africa’s economic demand. Petrofac said it has signed a contract worth nearly $600 million with Salalah LPG SFZCO LLC (SLPG), wholly owned subsidiary of Oman Oil Facilities Development Company LLC (OOFDC), to undertake the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of its Salalah LPG extraction project in the southern part of Oman. Under the terms of the 36-month lump sum EPC contract, which will be triggered when SLPG issue to Petrofac the Notice To Proceed (NTP), Petrofac's scope of work will include construction of the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) unit and associated facilities, including tie-ins to existing pipeline infrastructure, together with LPG storage and jetty facilities at the Port of Salalah.

The Omani port of Salalah has registered a 29.4 per cent growth in container throughput in 2016 thus retaining its status as one of the region’s preeminent container transshipment hubs, said a report in Oman Observer. In initial unaudited and unapproved financials published on Thursday, the port announced that container traffic rose to 3.325 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) last year, up from 2.569 million TEUs in 2015, says the report. The spike reverses a downtrend in volumes handled at the port’s container terminal, it stated. Meanwhile, Port of Salalah received 34 cruise ships with 35,524 tourists of various nationalities in 2016  compared to 29,000 in 2015.

Container throughput at the Port of Salalah, part of the APM Terminals Global Terminal Network, reached 1.584 million TEU* in the first half of 2016, representing a 29% increase over volume handled during the same period the year prior. The completion of a new deep-water General Cargo and Liquid Bulk Terminal in December 2015 has enabled significant growth, with the facility handling approximately one million metric tons monthly. Some of the container volume growth is the result of Salalah’s proximity to the open sea, and its ability to accommodate the largest of the Ultra-Large Container Ships (ULCS) entering into the Asia/Europe trade lanes. Approximately 90% of Salalah’s container traffic is transshipment cargo movement.

Maersk Line India a unit of Danish conglomerate A P Moller Maersk Group, has launched a new service from Salalah, Oman to the Krishnapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh. The weekly service to be started from April 17 will connect customers in the areas of AP, Northern Tamil Nadu and Eastern Karnataka directly to Oman and nearby region. Krishnapatnam Port is a privately built and owned all weather, deep water port on the east coast of India, located in the Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh. Chinta Sasidhar, Managing Director, Krishnapatnam Port Company Ltd (KPCL) said “ The new service will substantially reduce transit time in these areas and will also minimise the cost, which will be of a huge benefit to our customers.

Oman's top port Salalah has signed trade agreements with key Iranian terminals in the latest efforts by the Gulf country to boost shipping ties with Tehran following the lifting of international sanctions. Measures against Iran were lifted in January as part of a nuclear deal with world powers, ending years of isolation which saw the international shipping sector cut ties and disrupt supplies to import-dependent Iran. The United Arab Emirates previously enjoyed greater shipping activity with Iran but ports in Oman are looking at expanding ties. The Port of Salalah, a major Arab Gulf regional gateway port and transshipment hub on the Arabian Sea, has inaugurated a new deep-water General Cargo and Liquid Bulk Terminal, adding 20 million tons of dry cargo and six million tons of liquid bulk cargo annual handling capacity. The 1266 meter  quay offers two 320 meter-long General Cargo berths, two 300 meter-long liquid bulk berths and a depth of 18 meters. “The new facility is able to handle a wide range of vessels, ranging from naval ships, to vessels handling limestone, cement, livestock, project cargo and other dry bulk commodities as Salalah continues to grow as a key center of trade and logistics for the region” said Port of Salalah CEO David Gledhill.

The Port of Salalah, a major Arab Gulf region gateway port and transshipment hub on the Arabian Sea, has announced that French-based CMA CGM, the world’s third-largest container shipping line, will add two new weekly services to East Africa, and Europe, beginning the first week of December: the Noura Express and the EPIC service. The Noura Express service, on the East Africa trade lane operates four vessels of up to 2,755 TEU capacity, linking the ports of Jebel Ali (UAE), Khor al Fakkan (UAE), Mombasa (Kenya), Mogadishu (Somalia) and Salalah. At Salalah, transshipment is available to CMA CGM’s Europe Pakistan India Consortium (EPIC) Service, which links ports in South Asia, the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea, the Mediterranean, and North Europe.

Press release- Global engineering group Cavotec has won five separate orders with a combined value of more than $9.6  million for some of its key innovative technologies, including the Group's MoorMasterTM automated mooring system and the new Automatic Plug-in System (APS), highlighting the strength and diversity of Cavotec's portfolio. The largest of these orders is for a number of MoorMasterTM MM400E automated mooring units at the Port of Salalah in Oman, which are to be installed at one of the port's container berths.

Cavotec announced it has received orders for its port technologies in Australia, Indonesia, Oman, Portugal and Turkey, and for two major shipping lines, with a combined value of more than EUR 11.5 million. Cavotec will supply eight MoorMaster automated mooring units for installation at a container berth at the Port of Salalah in Oman, where a number of MoorMaster units have been in service for several years. MoorMaster is a vacuum-based automated mooring technology that eliminates the need for conventional mooring lines.

The JOC Group’s latest study of port productivity data, covering the year 2013, retains APM Terminals Yokohama as the world’s leading container terminal in productivity with 163 container moves per vessel hour (MPH). It’s not every day that passengers on board a civilian cruise liner would get so close to a warship on operations that they could wave to each other, but this is just what happened when the German cruise liner, AIDAdiva, with over 2,000 passengers on board, met German frigate FGS Hessen at sea, informs EUNAVFOR. The German Navy warship FGS Hessen, which is currently operating with the EU Naval Force, was conducting routine counter-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden, when the AIDAdiva, which was built in Papenburg, Germany came over the horizon.

Cavotec has been awarded a €10 million order for MoorMaster automated mooring units at a container port to be disclosed later in a joint press release with the customer. It is the largest single order to date for the technology, and further underlines the growing demand for Cavotec's automated mooring systems. Cavotec will design, manufacture and install MoorMaster systems for a port mooring container ships up to 13,000 TEU. Cavotec will also train locally based technicians who will provide technical support for the customer following delivery of the units.

During a port visit by EU Naval Force Flag Ship FS MARNE in Salalah (Oman), the EUNAVFOR Force Commander Rear Admiral Dupuis flew to Muscat to meet Omani maritime authorities. Discussions focused on the current positive developments in counter piracy and their possible reasons (30 attacks in early 2012 compared with 111 for the same period in 2011). The Omani authorities have reiterated their interest and involvement in the fight against piracy and more generally in monitoring their territorial waters.

Iranian commandos reportedly stormed, released the Bolivian-flagged 63,400 dwt bulk carrier from pirate control Military sources informed the report that Iranian commandos stormed the Iranian-owned, Bolivian reglistered bulk carrier Eglantine, which is steaming towards the Omani port of Salalah, according to news carried by 'Somalia Report'. The 12-year old bulk carrier was seized by pirates 305 nm northwest of the Malivian capital Male late last month carrying a cargo of sugar from Brazil. She is owned by Andulena Corp of Tehran, and has a crew of 23, whose condition is presently not known.

As the NATO and EU NAVFOR operations Ocean Shield and Atalanta continue their work in the Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and Red Sea areas, one could easily be forgiven for thinking, well, that’s that. Tough luck, pirates, the world is on to you. Sadly, as anyone involved in international shipping knows, that is very far from the truth. The fact is that the areas patrolled by the world’s navies are vast and the chance of early interdiction of a pirate skiff or mothership by a naval vessel is small. In the risk versus reward world of the pirate, it’s a virtual no-brainer.

According to a Reuters report, a chemical oil tanker thwarted a hijack attempt by pirates near the Omani port of Salalah Sunday, a day after a tanker and crew were taken from inside the port in front of the coast guard. According to reports cited in the Reuters story, a pirate skiff fired on the chemical tanker, but its efforts were defeated by evasive manuevers. On Saturday, pirates took the empty MV Fairchem Bogey chemical oil tanker from its anchorage at the port in the mouth of the Gulf of Aden, taking 21 Indian crew members hostage and heading to Somalia.
