British building materials company Tarmac has partnered with London’s fastest growing port, the Port of Tilbury, to create the UK’s largest construction materials aggregates terminal at Tilbury2, the new port being constructed on the north bank of the River Thames.The work will see the creation of new aggregate processing and manufacturing facilities, including an asphalt and ready mix concrete plant, at the new port terminal, supported by the terminal’s deep sea capacity for vessels up to 100,000 metric tonnes. Its riverside location will enable the easy import of raw materials and facilitate the use of the River Thames as a delivery route for processed construction materials into Central London.Martin Riley…

The Port of Tilbury, London’s major port, begins its pre-planning community consultation on 6 March to seek local views on its proposals to build a new port terminal adjacent to the current port. The proposed new port terminal, known as Tilbury2, will be built on a 152 acre site which was part of the former Tilbury Power Station and will include a new pontoon and deep water jetty. The Port of Tilbury has been expanding at a fast rate over the past two decade as businesses in the port look for more space and land; coupled with a significant increase in the goods and products coming through the port. The port estimates that this will increase further in the next 15 years which the proposed new port terminal would support.

Trade in the Port of London in 2016 reached the highest this decade, rising 10% to top 50 million tonnes for the first time since 2008. The strong performance reflects continued growth at terminals along the Thames. The volumes of oil, containers and building materials all rose markedly. Prior to 2016, port throughput had been increasing at between two to three percent, year-on-year. PLA chief executive, Robin Mortimer said, "Our long term Vision is for 60 to 80 million tonnes of cargo to be traded every year through the Port of London - more than at any time in the Thames' history. The tonnage of cargo handled at terminals on the Thames last year was 50.4 million tonnes, five million tonnes (or 11%) up on 2015.

EMR, one of the world’s largest metal recycling companies has made a significant commitment to remaining in its existing Tilbury Dock facility. Not only has it just signed a new 25 year lease with the Port of Tilbury, it will be upgrading its facilities and investing around £3m in improved ship loading equipment. The site plays an important role in EMR’s activities in the South East of England. It acts as an export hub for the company’s numerous depots around London and handles over 1 million tonnes of UK-produced scrap metal, mainly iron and steel, every year. The Port of London saw larger ships than ever calling last year as the tonnage of cargo handled at Thames terminals climbed to 45.4 million metric tons (up 2 percent from 2014). PLA chief executive, Robin Mortimer said, “Last year a number of operators introduced new, bigger ships and records were broken. The record breakers included containership, UASC Barzan and cruise ship Viking Star. The 400 -meter-long Barzan set a new benchmark as the biggest-ever ship on the Thames when she called at London Gateway Port in September.

The Port of London Authority (PLA) is recruiting 12 new pilots this year to respond to increased traffic on the Thames. The PLA is looking for candidates with a Class 1 Unlimited Certificate of Competency. Other suitably qualified candidate who can demonstrate experience relative to marine pilotage will also be considered. The candidates will typically undertake a 28-week training course consisting of training on the PLA’s ship bridge simulator and tug simulator, training in Vessel Traffic Services and on board tugs and ships, with regular reviews, assessments and oral exams.

The vital role that the River Thames plays in the economy, the movement of freight and the transport of passengers – and also in the wellbeing of the capital’s residents – has been made clear in two new reports launched by the Port of London Authority (PLA) this week during London International Shipping Week. PLA chief executive Robin Mortimer revealed some significant data relating to the river, which is home to the UK’s second biggest port. The tidal Thames and the Port of London generate 43,500 full-time equivalent jobs, of which 27,000 are people directly employed in port-related operations, with the remainder in the associated supply chain and support activities, he said.

Suez Environment subsidiary, SITA UK, and Forth Ports Limited announced a long-term partnership that will see the creation of a major recycling and resource management hub based at the Port of Tilbury on the River Thames. The partnership is part of a growth strategy for both companies that includes the acquisition, for an undisclosed sum, of Forth Ports-owned Nordic Recycling by SITA UK under a share purchase agreement and a long-term agreement between the two companies. As part of this agreement, SITA UK will deliver a new alternative fuels waste material processing facility at the Port of Tilbury, which will process both solid recovered fuel (SRF) and refuse derived fuel (RDF).

A cruise ship passenger has died and another was airlifted to hospital after the 22,000-tonne cruise ship 'Marco Polo'  was hit by a freak wave in the English Channel during the recent storm. The cruise ship operators, Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) confirm that after a freak wave hit their cruise ship m/s Marco Polo in the English Channel during heavy weather, the ship is now in home port, London Tilbury. They add that they regret to advise that one elderly passenger has died…

On Thursday, July 4, IMO Secretary–General  Mr. Koji Sekimizu joined Tilbury’s Apostleship of the Sea port chaplain, Deacon Paul Glock and National Director Martin Foley, for some ship visiting and to see first-hand the work of seafarers’ charity Apostleship of the Sea. Together they visited two container ships that were in the port that day. They spent time listening to the crew who shared their experiences of life at sea in the twenty-first century. Since its recent launch, Strainstall’s Container weighing system has already become established in the Intermodel/Ports industry. UK based Forth Ports orders the carriers for its upgrade of the London Container Terminal (LCT) at Tilbury. Forth Ports is investing in substantial equipment and site upgrading to LCT to ensure customers continue to receive a first rate and enhanced service. It is also integrating LCT with the busy short-sea terminal, also located at Tilbury. Part of the investment plan is the purchase of 14 new Kalmar ESC 450W straddle carriers from Cargotec. LCT handles in excess of half a million containers per year and is the only UK port servicing both deep sea and short sea customers. It is located on the Thames and is a key shipping and distribution location with access to London and the South East.

According to a Sept. 13 report from BBC News, a ship thought to be the last steamcoaster in the world is preparing to head to her new home after a $2.9m restoration in Suffolk. The steamcoaster, built in 1890 and listed on the National Historic Fleet register, has been converted into a floating museum. She will stay at the Port of Tilbury for up to a year while a decision is made on her London base. The SS Robin was taken to Lowestoft in 2008 to undergo conservation work and repairs to her riveted structure. The work has been funded by Crossrail. Project management consultants Kampfner Limited led a team of East Anglian and London-based marine consultants, engineers, naval architects and shipwrights in the two-year restoration project. The first sailing of the restructured EPIC Service of Hamburg Süd and Hapag-Lloyd - linking North Europe with the Mediterranean region, the Middle East, and – will take place in the second week of May. With this service, the partners are offering, among other things, the only direct service from Europe to and the shortest connection to the industrial zones around the seaport. The two lines will be deploying six 4,200 TEU vessels in this service, with Hapag-Lloyd providing four units and Hamburg Süd two. The new EPIC Service will have the following port rotation: - Tilbury - - Gioia Tauro - Jebel Ali - - Mundra - Nhava Sheva - Gioia Tauro - . All key ports of the western and eastern Mediterranean will be linked with the Middle East, and via the central hub, Gioia Tauro.
