Car Carrier Rescues 303 People in the South China Sea

Japanese shipping company NYK said a car carrier it operates rescued 303 people from a vessel in distress in the South China Sea.On November 7, the Japanese-flagged pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) Helios Leader was sailing from Japan's port of Nagoya to the port of Singapore when it received a rescue request from the port authority of Sri Lanka via the port authority of Singapore.A Myanmar-flagged trawler Lady R3 was in distress about 258 nautical miles off the southeastern part of the Vung Tau cape.

Piracy Hotspots Persist Worldwide -IMB Report

Piracy and armed robbery on the world’s seas is persisting at levels close to those in 2014, despite reductions in the number of ships hijacked and crew captured, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) International Maritime Bureau’s (IMB) annual piracy report reveals. IMB’s Piracy Reporting Centre (IMB PRC) recorded 246 incidents in 2015, one more than in 2014. The number of vessels boarded rose 11 percent to 203, one ship was fired at, and a further 27 attacks were thwarted. Armed with guns or knives, pirates killed one seafarer and injured at least 14.

London Offshore Consultants (LOC) announced further expansion in Asia Pacific with the opening of a new office in Vietnam. The new office in the port of Vung Tau, which will formally begin operations in May, will be managed by Kenny Ong, who is highly experienced in major offshore oil and gas projects across Asia, especially in Vietnam. The office will provide oil majors, contractors, underwriters, and other insurers operating in Vietnam’s oil and gas sectors with specialist consultancy services for planning, design and execution of complex, high-value marine and energy-based operations.

Mathilde Maersk Largest Vessel to Call Vietnam

Vietnam has witnessed the largest ship ever to call at her shores. The Mathilde Maersk made its inaugural call as part of Maersk Line’s new direct service between South Vietnam and the U.S. West Coast on its Trans-Pacific 6 string (TP6) on 11 May 2010. Mathilde Maersk measures 1,204 ft long and can carry about 9,000 TEUs (twenty foot equivalent unit). Six New S&R Vessels for Vietnam

Damen delivered the last Search and Rescue Vessel, out of a series of six vessel to Vinamarine (Vietnam National Maritime Bureau). The vessel, named SAR 413, was delivered to Vinamarine in presence of the Vice Minister of Transportation, the Chairman of Vinamarine and the Ambassador of The Netherlands as well as representatives of Vinamarine, Damen and local industries. Delivery took place in the port of Haiphong and the vessel will based in Vietnam’s southern port of Vung Tau to be deployed in Vietnam’s southern coastal areas. The SAR 413 is a member of the Damen Stan Patrol Series and measures 137.8 x 23 ft. (42 x 7 m).
