Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller - Maersk recently named the world's second large methanol-enabled container vessel, Astrid Mærsk, during a ceremony in Yokohama, Japan.The ship is the second of Maersk’s 18 large methanol-enabled vessels, scheduled for delivery between 2024 and 2025, as the company works toward its net-zero targets and supports customers in achieving their decarbonization goals.Vincent Clerc, CEO of A.P. A.P. Moller-Maersk has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the City of Yokohama and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical. The agreement will focus on the development of green methanol bunkering infrastructure in Yokohama as Maersk’s 16,000 TEU green methanol-powered container vessels will be delivered since 2024.Maersk has a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040 throughout its entire business. For shipping, it will equip its 25 container vessels with dual-fuel engines capable of sailing on green methanol.

A port call made by CMA CGM Liberty at the Honmoku D4 terminal in Yokohama on Monday is the first by a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered containership in Japan. At 15,000-TEU, the containership also ranks amongst the largest vessels to be calling in Japan.CMA CGM Liberty is one of three e-methane ready LNG-powered vessels that the Group has lined-up on the weekly Asia Central South America 1 (ACSA1) service. NYK finalized a contract with Keihin Dock Co., Ltd., an NYK Group company, to modify a tugboat to ammonia-fuel specifications. Sakigake, a tugboat currently fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and operated in Tokyo Bay by NYK Group company Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha Corporation will be converted to operate on ammonia fuel by a target completion year of 2024.This R&D was initiated in October 2021 by NYK and IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd.

Hikawa Maru, the only existing large-scale cargo-passenger ship built in Japan before the war, celebrates its 88th anniversary since delivery on April 25, 2018. Since 2008, Hikawa Maru has been moored at Yamashita Park in Yokohama as a museum ship open to the public. In order to offer shippers a more comprehensive service on Asia-Australia trade, Evergreen Line, OOCL, MOL, "K" Line and YML are teaming up to offer a new joint North East Asia - Australia Express (NEAX).   This weekly service will utilize six ships of between 3,500 and 3,700 TEU capacity, one each provided by Evergreen, MOL, K-LINE, YML and the remaining two by OOCL. The first sailing is planned to depart from Yokohama on October 23, with the following port rotation: Yokohama - Osaka - Pusan - Qingdao - Shanghai - Ningbo - Melbourne - Sydney - Brisbane, then returning to Yokohama.

NYK is participating in a study launched by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Tourism (MLIT) to explore the feasibility of LNG bunkering in Yokohama. This study is examining the technological and infrastructural requirements for establishment of an LNG bunkering hub at the port of Yokohama to supply LNG as fuel to ships. A kick-off meeting of the study’s steering committee was held on June 9 for the creation of a facility development plan by the end of the year. In accordance with the NYK Group’s medium-term management plan, “More Than Shipping 2018,” NYK has started the process of using LNG to fuel some ships. In August 2015, the company received delivery of Japan's first LNG-fueled tugboat named “Sakigake”.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. received a letter of appreciation from the Paraguayan Embassy, thanking the company for providing ocean transport of used wheelchairs from Japan to Paraguay, where they were delivered to needy children. The first scheduled Roll-On/Roll-Off (RoRo) vessel, MV Dream Angel, berthed at the Khalifa Port RoRo terminal on Monday, January 5, heralding the transition of Abu Dhabi Ports’ RoRo cargo, from Zayed Port to Khalifa Port. Operated by Nissan Motor Car Carrier (NMCC), the MV Dream Angel arrived from the Port of Yokohama and Port of Kanda in Japan laden with 164 car units for Abu Dhabi Ports’ key customer Al Masaood Automobiles, one of the region’s main distributors for Nissan and Infiniti. The new vehicles will next be sent to car dealers across the UAE.

Container Security Initiative (CSI) is expected to be operational at the port of Yokohama, Japan, for cargo containers destined for U.S. ports on March 24. CBP and the Japanese Customs and Tariff Bureau sealed a CSI declaration of principles on September 26, 2002. The port of Yokohama is the 10th CSI port to become operational. It joins the already operational CSI ports of Rotterdam, LeHavre, Bremerhaven, Hamburg, and Antwerp in Europe, Singapore in Asia, and Vancouver, Montreal, and Halifax in Canada. "CSI is essential to securing global trade against terrorist exploitation.
