Maersk has been welcomed to the Port of Liverpool with a formal reception for its feeder vessel Antwerp. The event on April 27 was attended by Seago and Maersk representatives along with customers, and was followed by a port tour, including a trip to the top of the 90m Grain Tower. The 1,100 TEU Antwerp made its first call last week. Operator Seago is the latest carrier to introduce a new service via Liverpool and will provide a new cargo route between Algeciras-Liverpool-Dublin.

U.K. Shipping Minister Robert Goodwill MP has welcomed the investment being made by Peel Ports during a March 10 visit to the company’s Liverpool2 container terminal. Dutch company WEC Lines is to begin weekly calls at the Port of Liverpool from February 10th, providing a new option for shippers looking to access central and northern UK markets. The brand new service will connect Liverpool with Lisbon, Setubal, Leixoes and Sines and vice versa, with other links to Ireland, Scotland, Morocco, Spain and the Canary Islands. Peel Ports announced that it has secured 50 advocates for its Cargo200 initiative and is urging other shippers in the North-west to add their weight to the campaign. Launched in May, Peel Ports called for importers and exporters whose goods began or ended their journey in the north of the UK to switch current delivery of ocean freight from south-east ports to the centrally-located Port of Liverpool. The initiative aims to cut freight mileage by 200 million miles over the next five years. In addition to achieving significant carbon reduction, the company also estimates that the move could save shippers up to £400 per container in transportation costs by delivering to the heartland of the UK.

Leading UK port operator, Peel Ports Group, has been recognised as the UK’s top company in this year’s prestigious Sunday Times Grant Thornton Top Track 250 league table. Its ambitious development plans and strong financial results were key factors in the Liverpool-based business leaping 25 places ahead on its 2014 ranking. The emergence of mega gateway ports is in danger of failing the global supply chain, causing congestion, adding cost and impacting on air quality and local environments, delegates at South America’s largest multimodal logistics event will be told next week. During a presentation in Sao Paulo on Tuesday 7 April, Patrick Walters, Commercial Director of Peel Ports, the UK’s second largest port operator, will call for a radical rethink by the supply chain to refocus on direct calls to ports closest to cargo centres as an integral part of the global supply chain network design. Food and drink logistics giant, Culina Group, has been announced as the first major tenant at the new National Import Centre being developed by the Peel Group, as part of its multi-million pound Port Salford development (located approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) west of Manchester City Centre in the UK). Culina Group will take occupation of the first warehouse distribution unit to be built on the Port Salford site - the UK’s first tri-modal inland port facility and Distribution Park, accessible by rail, road and short sea-shipping. The property comprises 26,022 sq. m. (280,000 sq. ft.) of accommodation, including ancillary offices, service yard and parking.
