Disabled Log Carrier Towed into NZ Port for Repairs

A log carrier that lost power and went adrift while leaving New Zealand's Port of Tauranga last week has been towed into port for repair and further inspection, local maritime authorities said.The Singapore-flagged Funing was outbound for Lanshan, China when it suffered engine failure and began drifting amid 30 knot winds and significant swells between Mount Manganui and Matakana Island last Monday.Powerless and adrift, the vessel snagged the chains holding a channel marker buoy, causing propeller and rudder damage.

Two Arrested for Smuggling through Nogales Port

Two males, one from Mexico and the other a United States citizen, were recently arrested in separate drug-smuggling attempts through Nogales Port of Entry. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Dennis DeConcini crossing referred Jorge Humberto Lopez-Ramos, 64, of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, for additional inspection of a GMC truck he attempted to drive through the port Tuesday morning. A CBP narcotic detection canine alerted to the vehicle’s driver-side door, where officers discovered 27.5 pounds of methamphetamine, worth an estimated $82,500. Monday, CBP officers at the Mariposa crossing referred Christian Ortiz, 31, a U.S. citizen living in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, for a further search of his Chevrolet truck.

Nine Dead in Ferry Accident

According to reports, a ferry packed with more than 300 people partially capsized after hitting a sandbar off Haiti's southern peninsula, killing at least nine people and injuring dozens, officials said Wednesday. The ferry was pulling out of port Tuesday when it hit a sandbar off the town of Jeremie, according to local officials. The 560-ton ferry had been making a weekly trip to the capital of Port-au-Prince and was loaded with commercial goods. It later returned to shore after being pulled free by a larger boat.
