Tech File: Tank Ullage Gauge
With the IMO 2020 sulfur cap in effect from the beginning of this year, the need to measure lighter marine fuels has grown, and Japan-based SEMCO has a tool for the job. In complying with the new regulations, there will be an increasing number of cases in which high transparency and low viscosity compatible fuels such as MGO are supplemented, and in these instances, there has been concern with conventional scales due to past experiences in which it was difficult to get an accurate sounding measurement of tank contents, SEMCO said.
Ocean Guardian: Simplifying Environmental Compliance
Environmental compliance challenges are nothing new to the cruise industry. Initiatives to enhance environmental compliance, from clean technologies to improved processes and procedures, have significantly reduced the impact cruise vessels have on the environment and improved the quality of discharge. These onboard initiatives address what is in the vessel’s control, but cannot simplify the increasingly complex regulatory environment in which cruise lines operate. Enforcement of environmental regulations is on the rise as international…

Continuous Emissions Monitoring System
A new emissions monitoring system being developed by a Norfolk, Va. systems engineering firm will allow vessels worldwide to continuously monitor pollutants and readily report findings to regulatory agencies and inspectors. The patent-pending Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS), developed by W R Systems, Ltd. (WRSystems), is the first technology integration of its kind. A successful land-based test of the CEMS prototype was performed in August 2009. Stringent new regulations regarding vessel emissions are forthcoming from US and worldwide governments and maritime organizations. WRSystems developed the new technology to help the maritime industry meet these new regulations and reduce their carbon footprint.
