Englishman: 11th Humber Tug Bears the Name

Humber tugboat operator SMS Towage has drawn on an old name for the latest addition to its fleet. The new Englishman is the 11th Humber tug to bear the title, in a tradition stretching back to the 19th century. Built at the Sanmar yard on the edge of Istanbul to a Canadian design, she produces 3,500bhp and can bring in 270m long ships of more than 170,000 metric tons dead weight. The 25m £3.5m vessel is capable of 13 knots and is among the most maneuverable on the estuary. She is one of 13 owned by Hull-based SMS Towage…

Korea's Hanjin Shipping Mulls Portland Pull-out

Manila's International Container Terminal Services Inc's (ICTSI), troubled venture in Portland, Oregon, faces more difficulties as its big customer, Hanjin Shipping, is pondering whether to leave the port for either Tacoma or Seattle, according to the 'China Logistics Portal'. Portland has been plagued with labour problems, resulting in on-again off-again work slowdowns, which came from conflicting undertakings given to two unions over which union would supply reefer box monitors. The Portland Port Authority contracted the work to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, while the employers' Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) had guaranteed all waterfront work to the ILWU.

Cammell Laird Extends Repair Reach West

Following quickly on the heels of an overseas investment deal in Marseilles, Cammell Laird (Holdings) has increased its involvement in the overseas repair and conversion industries by taking a $7.7 million (49%) equity stake in a new holding company along with United States' West Coast shiprepairer Cascade General. This deal has an option for Cammell Laird to take a controlling interest within the next two years. The deal will allow the new company to purchase the repair facility (freehold and docks) at Portland, Oregon, the largest single repair facility on the U.S. West Coast. The facility is currently owned by Portland Port Authority and operated by Cascade General.

MMA, M-P.A.C.T. Joint Program at Port Security Training

Maine Maritime Academy (MMA), in conjunction with its maritime security training partner, M-P.A.C.T., will launch a pilot program aimed at enhancing security at Maine seaports. The program, Maritime Security for Military, First Responder, and Law Enforcement Personnel, seeks to provide a single bridge solution to federal mandates, U.S. Coast Guard limited resources, and unmet public safety needs for maritime domain security awareness training in Maine. Organizers of the program foresee it as serving immediate regional needs while identifying Maine a model for other states to follow. Maritime Security for Military, First Responder, and Law Enforcement Personnel is set to debut at the Maine Maritime Academy campus in Castine, Maine, Nov.
