Singapore's Pavilion Energy has signed a 10-year deal to buy liquefied natural gas (LNG) from BP's Singapore unit starting in 2024, the companies said on Wednesday, as the city-state seeks to diversify its gas supply sources.The long-term binding LNG sale and purchase agreement (SPA) is for the supply of about 0.8 million tonnes of LNG a year to Singapore, Pavilion and BP said in a joint statement. They did not give financial details.This is the third long-term deal that Pavilion, owned by Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings, has signed since November.

Just in time for Nor-Shipping, DNV GL will launch the LNG Fuel Finder - a new tool on its LNG business intelligence portal LNGi. The new LNG Fuel Finder service will allow shipowners and charterers to register their interest in using LNG as a ship fuel free of charge, connecting them directly with LNG suppliers. DNV GL has also introduced the option of signing up to a new lean version, where interested parties can access some of LNGi’s services and data free of charge. The question of bunkering availability is still a major stumbling block for shipowners looking to make their first moves in LNG as a marine fuel. Information can be hard to find, and it remains challenging to keep track of new developments.

Damen Shipyard Group’s Australian team has delivered two more industry briefings to potential suppliers from Australian industry ahead of its bid submission for the design and build of 12 offshore patrol vessels (OPV). Following February’s events held in Adelaide and Perth, Damen hosted a third in Brisbane on March 15 and a fourth two days later in Melbourne. The Damen group is one of three international shipbuilders shortlisted for the building of the 12 steel-hulled OPVs to replace Australia’s current fleet of Armidale Class patrol boats.

India is scouting for new liquefied natural gas (LNG) contracts globally as part of a push to secure cheap supplies for its under-utilized gas-fired power plants, reports Bloomberg. Australia, Qatar and Iran could all act as potential suppliers of long-term LNG contracts, power minister Piyush Goyal said in Sydney. The global search for LNG comes as India’s gas-fired plants, which can generate nearly 25 gigawatts of power, run at less than a quarter of their capacity because of a shortage of the fuel at affordable prices. “I think gas needs to be between $5 and $5.50 landed at my power plant. That is what I’m looking for in the medium- to long-term,” Goyal said. In fact, a boom in LNG demand and projects is taking shape in India.

The Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) has reportedly failed to secure two cargoes for delivery in April, says a report in Reuters. The tender launched during last week was open to EGAS’ existing suppliers, however, delivery windows of April 1-7 for the first cargo and April 27-28 were difficult to arrange due to a short period notice. Traders said the first delivery window was difficult to arrange given the short notice period. For the late-April cargo, EGAS lined up commodity trader Trafigura as the supplier, but the deal ran into difficulties after EGAS tried to bring forward delivery to the middle of April, traders said. Neither of the two delivery slots has been filled as of Thursday, and EGAS is still in talks with potential suppliers over the two cargoes.

Japan looking to fix faltering Australian submarine bid. Japan is ready to match European rivals and build a fleet of submarines for Canberra entirely at Australian shipyards, a senior Japanese official said on Tuesday, after stumbling in its effort to win the A$50 billion ($34.76 billion) contract. Tokyo was willing to train hundreds of Australian engineers in Japan's submarine-manufacturing hub of Kobe as well as in Australia as part of its offer for one of the world's biggest defence contracts, Masaaki Ishikawa, director general for Acquisition Reform at the Ministry of Defense, told Reuters. His comments are the first from an official directly involved in the bid that Japan is willing to build the stealth submarines entirely in Australia, where jobs are a hot button political issue.

Japan had been seen as frontrunner for Australian submarine deal, but Australian defence firms unhappy after talks with Japan. A Japanese consortium eyeing a A$50 billion ($35.68 billion) contract to build submarines for Australia irked local suppliers by failing to share key information about its proposal or discuss specific collaboration possibilities during a visit last week, executives at Australian firms said. The apparent missteps underscore Japan's inexperience in bidding for global defence deals after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe ended a decades-old ban on weapons exports last year as part of his more muscular security agenda. The Government ministers concerned have announced that the Government of Canada has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to seek industry feedback on the next generation of Coast Guard lifeboats, due to be built as part of the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy’s (NSPS) small vessels program. The intent of this RFI is to engage directly with Canadian shipyards who are potential suppliers of these new vessels. This first step in the procurement process will provide the Government with valuable information before drafting the Request for Proposal.

Despite the threat of overcapacity in the cruise shipping industry, newbuilding contracts have remained on a constant high — specifically in the mega ship sector.
