Wärtsilä said it will supply the engines for two new articulated tug barges (ATBs), designed by Robert Allan Ltd and built by Estaleiro Rio Maguari for Brazilian logistics integrator Alianҫa Navegaҫão e Logística, a member of A.P.Moller - Maersk.The order was placed in May 2022, and according to Wärtsilä, the main consideration in the award of the contract was to minimize fuel consumption and emissions in line with the company’s commitment towards decarbonizing its operations. The two 6400 kW vessels are being built at the Estaleiro Rio Maguari yard in Brazil.

Danish shipbuilder Tuco Marine rounded out 2017 with the sale of another ProZero boat for the Norwegian fish farming sector. Emilsen Fisk in Rørvik has ordered a ProZero boat tailored to breeders' specific requirements. The 11-meter ProZero workboat, purchased through Tuco subsidiary ProZero Norge AS, will be used for passenger transport at the Emilsen Fisk AS breeding plant off Rørvik. Tuco noted that the vessel’s deep-V bottom secures a comfortable ride and exceptional seakeeping capabilities – all-important qualities if the crew is to arrive rested and ready at the facility.

GE’s Marine Solutions recently delivered its power take off/power take in (PTO/PTI) solution along with its Power Management System digital software solution onboard four of the largest container vessels owned by Maersk Line—Madrid Maersk, Munich Maersk, Moscow Maersk and Milan Maersk. Madrid Maersk is the first container vessel delivered from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME)—back in April—and Munich Maersk and Moscow Maersk have both completed successful sea trials. Milan Maersk will soon be in service.

Shanghai Salvage Bureau’s (SSB) new ship is purpose-designed for a range of roles including deep-water salvage operations, deep-water pipelay and construction as well as a saturation diving capability for up to 24 divers in two bells. Recently, GE’s Marine Solutions has been chosen by SSB, one of the largest rescue and salvage companies in the world, to provide a suite of marine technologies including power and propulsion equipment, dynamic positioning (DP) and automation and control systems to its newest deep-water dive support vessel (DSV).

It seems like a lifetime coming, but the IMO International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM) has been approved and will enter into force on September 8, 2017. Deemed as an environmental necessity, it creates an enormous operational challenge for the maritime industry. As ship owners, system installers and BWM system manufacturers alike prepare for the many challenges associated with implementation, it would be wise to more closely evaluate the real (and sometimes hidden) risks to system operators and manufacturers.

Rolls-Royce won a contract to supply diesel generators, propellers and shaft lines for the US Navy’s new fleet replenishment oiler ships, the John Lewis Class. Planned to total 17 ships, the new John Lewis class (previously known as TAO – X) will increase the US Navy’s capability to transfer fuel to its surface ships, in operations around the globe. For each ship, Rolls-Royce will supply two Kamewa 150A Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP), while two Bergen B32:40xL8A generator sets will provide power to satisfy on board energy requirements. “We are extremely proud to have been chosen to supply mission critical power and propulsion equipment to the US Navy’s new fleet of replenishment oilers," said Don Roussinos, Rolls-Royce, President – Naval.

Rolls-Royce has signed a contract with Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group (Sinopacific) in Shanghai for a package of power and propulsion equipment and deck machinery. The contract is to equip nine SPA80A Anchor Handling Tug Supply vessels to be designed and built by Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group and owned and operated by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and its wholly-owned subsidiary, ESNAAD. Each ship will have a bollard pull of 80 metric tons, and be equipped with Bergen diesel engines, main and tunnel thrusters, electrical power system and a deck machinery package from Rolls-Royce.

Rolls-Royce announced it will take the lead on a €6.6 million project that could pave the way for autonomous ships. The Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications Initiative will produce the specification and preliminary designs for the next generation of advanced ship solutions. A 738-foot motor vessel Kind Seas was detained by the U.S. Coast Guard after significant safety violations were found during an inspection in Kalama, Washington, Friday. Discrepancies were discovered by Portland’s Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit vessel inspectors during a routine inspection of the 1998-built Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier vessel. Safety violations were related to a complete failure of the emergency generator, which provides power to emergency equipment including the emergency firefighting pump system. Other discrepancies include deficient structural fire boundary doors designed to prevent the spread of a fire, inoperable bilge pumps critical to removing excess water and waste oil accumulation in engine compartments, and inoperable life saving communication equipment.

Rotork announced it has acquired Masso Ind s.p.a., a manufacturer of shipboard valve remote control systems (VRCS), to enhance its range of flow control products and services for the worldwide marine and offshore industries. Masso VRCS solutions include hydraulic and electro-hydraulic systems that are compatible with most integrated automation systems required for critical safety applications. The Masso product range also includes hydraulic quarter-turn and linear actuators, hydraulic power packs, solenoid cabinets and electro-hydraulic actuators for shipboard applications.

Rolls-Royce has secured a landmark agreement to supply six of its new B33:45 medium-speed diesel generator sets to China’s Fuijan Mawei shipyard for configuration aboard the world’s first ever seabed mining vessel. The pioneering vessel, designed by Singapore’s SeaTech Solutions for Dubai-based owner Marine Assets Corporation (MAC), will be powered by six B33:45L9A engines to provide 31.4 megawatts of power. General Electric today announced the opening of the $500 million Brazil Technology Center that will focus on developing advanced subsea oil and gas technology. The center, GE’s first in Latin America, will be a hub for engagement and collaboration with GE’s customers in the region and is expected to employ 400 researchers in the future. In the twentieth century, one of mankind’s greatest feats was successfully landing on the moon more than 235,000 miles from earth. In the 21st century, mankind’s greatest feat may well be securing the  world’s energy future for the next few centuries. Subsea engineers often say that it is actually more difficult to put a machine 10,000 feet under the sea than send a rocket to the moon.

The Marseilles Fos port authority said it is targeting mid-2015 to complete the €28 million renovation of its giant drydock 10 to provide a strategically located base for cruise ship repair and maintenance. At 465 meters long and 85 metrs wide - the third biggest in the world after Lisbon and Dubai – the drydock will offer a unique facility for the latest-generation fleet in the Mediterranean, where 65% of the world’s largest cruise vessels operate. These include ships of up to 360 meters that currently call at Marseilles.
