Norway's Myklebust Verft to Build World's Largest Hydrogen Ferries

Mackinac Island Ferry Set for Electric Conversion

A Mackinac Island passenger ferry will be converted to zero-emissions electric power with the help of a $3.06 million award from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) Fuel Transformation Program (FTP) Part 2.Star Line, now known as the Mackinac Island Ferry Company (MIFC), will replace two 1988 diesel engines with two brand new electric propulsion motors on a ferry, the Chippewa, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 14,152 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents and 887 metric tons of nitrogen oxides over the boat’s lifetime.

In a First, Scottish Port Set to Offer Shore Power for Offshore Vessels

Montrose Port Authority says the port is set to become the first Scottish port to provide shore power infrastructure to the energy sector.To enable shore power to offshore energy industry vessels, the port has partnered with with Plug Shore Power Ltd in a 50/50 joint venture. The partnership will see an initial investment of £1 million into the joint venture which will be named Plug Montrose Ltd."Global shipping accounted for 833 million tonnes of CO2 in 2021. Currently only two British ports are equipped with shore power.

DOT Announces $703M in Port Funding; 41 Projects in 22 States

Crowley Tugs to Use Shore Power at Port of Lake Charles

Crowley said its Ocean Class tugboats are now equipped to connect to shore power at the Port of Lake Charles in Louisiana.Shore power infrastructure from Entergy Services, Inc. will allow Crowley's vessels to connect to electricity when not in service instead of running on diesel-fueled generators.The result will be an estimated reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by more than 500 metric tons per year, Crowley said.The Jacksonville, Fla. based shipping and logistics firm in 2021 announced its commitment to achieve net-zero emissions across its operations by 2050.

Boskalis Bags El Salvador FSRU Gig

Dutch dredging, offshore and heavylift company Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. has been awarded a major contract to connect an offshore Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU)  to an onshore power plant in El Salvador.The contract was awarded by Energia del Pacifico (EDP), a 378-MW liquefied natural gas (LNG)-to-power infrastructure project at the Port of Acajutla, El Salvador. The project will commence early 2020 and is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2021.‎The project entails the construction of a two-kilometer-long gas pipeline connection from the onshore power plant to an offshore FSRU including the mooring and hook-up.

Project to Eliminate Emissions at Norway Ports

Shore power and charging infrastructure could reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 12.5 million tonnes at ports in Norway every year – this is one of the main conclusions of a report compiled by a pool of experts from ABB, DNV GL, the Port of Oslo, and Cavotec, working under the auspices of ReCharge, an initiative that seeks to pave the way for zero emission ports in the Scandinavian country. The ReCharge project has assessed where emissions in Norwegian ports are generated, where there is greatest potential for reductions, and what kind of charging and shore power infrastructure needs to be developed to mitigate emissions. It has identified 64 vessels with an operational profile that would allow battery propulsion.

Golar, Stonepeak Launch Launch FSRU Joint Venture

Golar LNG Limited announced that it has entered into a 50/50 joint venture with investment vehicles affiliated with private equity firm Stonepeak Infrastructure Partners. ABB to Increase Norway’s Grid Capacity

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth around $30 million from Norwegian transmission system operator Statnett SF to supply power transformers that will help to significantly increase the capacity of the country’s central power grid, bolstering its energy security and ability to transmit more renewable energy. The order was booked in the second quarter of 2015. The order for nine transformers was booked in the second quarter of 2015. This includes seven 1,000 megavolt ampere (MVA) 420/300 kilovolt (kV) autotransformers and two 300 MVA 420/132 kV power transformers. The transformers will help increase transmission capacity of Norwayʼs main grid and ensure a stable power supply.

ABB's Power Infrastructure for UK Wind Farm

ABB has won a significant order to provide substations and related power infrastructure for the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm. ABB will provide power infrastructure for the offshore platform as well as the onshore substation to efficiently integrate the new wind farm into the country’s transmission grid. ABB will also extend an existing substation that will receive the wind power. The wind farm is scheduled for completion in 2018. The 400 Megawatt (MW) project is being built by energy company E.ON, in partnership with the UK Green Investment Bank plc (GIB).The wind farm will be situated off the Sussex coast between Worthing and Brighton and will include 116 turbines, with the nearest located 13 kilometers from shore.

Severe Winter Boosts TransCanada Profit

TransCanada Corp, Canada's No.2 pipeline company and the backer of the Keystone XL pipeline, reported a 14 percent rise in adjusted quarterly profit as an unusually harsh winter in North America boosted demand for its pipelines. Delivery volumes rose 24 percent in the company's Canadian Mainline gas pipeline system and 14 percent in the NGTL system in Western Canada in the first three months of the year. "An unseasonably cold winter resulted in strong demand for our critical pipeline and power infrastructure assets," Chief Executive Officer Russ Girling said in a statement. Girling said the recently completed Keystone Gulf Coast crude pipeline betweenCushing, Oklahoma, and the U.S.

ABB wins Brazil $30 mi Wind Farm Order

ABB has won orders worth around $30 million from Casa dos Ventos, a leading renewables company in Brazil, to provide substations and related power infrastructure enabling the efficient integration of power from two new wind complexes (comprising 13 wind farms) into the country’s transmission grid. The orders were booked in the first quarter of 2015. The projects in northeastern Brazil are scheduled for completion in 2016. Once finished, they will be capable of generating enough renewable energy to meet the consumption needs of about 300,000 local households, avoiding the annual emission of approximately 325.000 tons of carbon dioxide. The two 216 and 130 megawatt (MW) wind complexes São Clemente and Tianguá will be located in the states of Pernambuco and Ceará.

Savannah Container Volumes Jump in April

Port of Savannah container volumes jumped 25.8 percent in April, with a total volume of 335,337 twenty-foot equivalent container units, or an additional 69,000 units. The Georgia Ports Authority also saw strong growth in roll-on/roll-off traffic, moving 77,574 units through Brunswick and Savannah, a 14.1 percent gain. LR Energy Wins New Nuclear Deal in Middle East

Lloyd’s Register Energy together with Lightbridge Corporation has won a contract to support the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) internal inspection team to provide construction oversight and related technical services for a new generation of nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Lloyd’s Register Energy will be supporting FANR for several years on a series of work packages designed around project management, construction inspection and oversight services. These include design verification, inspection plans, quality assurance, and vendor inspection during site construction, installation and commissioning. FANR is the independent government body charged with regulating and licensing nuclear activities in the UAE.

ABB Wins $30mln Bangladesh Power Bid

ABB has won an order worth around $30 million from Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Limited (PGCB), the country’s leading transmission utility, to provide four new turnkey substations and help expand six others, to help meet the growing demand for electricity. The four new 132/33kV substations will be constructed at Rangamati, Khagrachori, Bianbazar and Sunamganj. Additionally, six existing substations will undergo expansion. This initiative is part of Bangladesh’s ongoing Power Systems Expansion and Efficiency Improvement Program, aimed at upgrading the country’s generation, transmission and distribution systems to increase capacity, improve efficiency, enhance power reliability and reduce environmental impact.
