John Deere Power Systems is shipping the new PowerTech 4045SFM85 marine engine to boat owners and builders. The manufacturer touts the PowerTech 4045SFM85's power-to-weight, torque and compact size, saying it is suited for planing and semi-displacement hulls.The PowerTech 4045SFM85 engine has two ratings:--  M4 rating with 205 kW (275 hp) at 2600 rpm and--  M5 rating with 235 kW (315 hp) at 2800 rpm. These ratings are ideal for light-duty commercial vessels, high-speed governmental applications and high-speed pleasure crafts.

Marine transportation provider Vane Brothers has taken delivery of the newly built tugboat Delaware, the fourth of eight vessels in Vane’s Elizabeth Anne Class of 4,200-horsepower tugs contracted through St. Johns Ship Building in Palatka, Fla. Designed by Frank Basile, P.E., of Entech Designs, LLC, the Delaware is a steel-hulled, model bow tug measuring 100 feet long with a 34-foot beam and 13-foot draught. She utilizes two Caterpillar 3516 Tier 3 (“A” Rated) engines, each generating 2,100 horsepower at 1,600 rpm.

The Group-wide efficiency programme is expected to lead to a reduction of approximately 1,000 employees globally, of which about 200 are planned to be in Finland, in a move to secure future profitability and competitiveness. Wärtsilä add that the reductions will impact all businesses and support functions. The company explains that despite some signs of improvement in market conditions, the business environment remains challenging. Roger Holm, M.Sc. (Econ.), has been appointed Senior Vice President, four-stroke, and member of the Ship Power management team as of 1 September 2013. In this position, he is responsible for Wärtsilä's four-stroke activities globally. Mr. Holm joined Wärtsilä in 1997 and has held several managerial positions, most recently leading the Seals and Bearings organization within Wärtsilä Services. Wärtsila obtained certification of emission standard compliance from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel engines. It will enable Wärtsilä to strongly enter the American market with marine engine technology that offers operators and owners the option of using either diesel or gas as fuel. The certification was obtained on January 17, 2013. John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) announced new Marine Tier 3 PowerTechTM 4.5L and 6.8L propulsion and generator-drive engines. John Deere will meet U.S. EPA Marine Tier 3 emissions regulations that began to take effect in 2009 based on cylinder displacement and power per displacement with a complete lineup of PowerTech 4.5L and 6.8L propulsion and generator-drive engines. They also will achieve compliance with IMO Tier II emissions regulations and EU 97/68/EC. New EPA Marine Tier 3 regulations will impact John Deere 4.5L and 6.8L engines beginning January 1, 2013.

Wärtsilä’s group-wide quality programme and the quality organisation will become Mr. Maguire's responsibility from 1, Feb 2013. Mr Philip Maguire, BSc (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, will be a member of the Wärtsilä PowerTech management team and report to Lars Hellberg, President, Wärtsilä PowerTech. He succeeds Mr Osmo Härkönen who will retire at the end of January 2013. Mr Maguire joins Wärtsilä from Tetra Pak where, as Vice President, Quality, he developed and executed a quality acceleration programme.
