R/V Nanuq Joins U. of Alaska Fleet

Nichols Brothers Boat Builders has set an aggressive time table to deliver four 90-short ton bollard pull tugs to Foss Maritime that represent the company’s push to enhance its fleet with vessels that meet stringent environmental standards.The 100-foot by 40-foot tugs designed by Jensen Maritime Consultants are multifunctional vessels, capable of ship assist and escort capabilities, towing and fighting fires. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego has added to its fleet a fourth research vessel, which was constructed by Armstrong Marine. PPG announced that its protective and marine coatings business (PPG-PMC) has introduced the PPG ASSET INTEGRITY MANAGEMENT (PPG AIM) system in the United States and Canada. Kitsap Transits Adds Two Fast Ferries to Service Seattle

Kitsap Transit’s early test of a passenger-only ferry service between Bremerton and Seattle has proved successful enough that the agency is adding two new fast ferries to its fleet.The passenger-only ships will expand the marine highway being developed to help ease congestion in the Puget Sound area. Nichols Brothers Boat Builders of Freeland, Washington, was hired to build the two ferries, with an option to build a third ship.Each of the 140-foot-long aluminum catamarans are powered by two MTU 16V4000 M65L engines and two Rolls-Royce S71 water jets, all being provided by Pacific Power Group.

San Francisco Bay Area ferry operator Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) is expanding its fleet with new vessels in order to meet large ridership increases. By 2035, WETA expects to add a total of 44 new vessels to meet anticipated demand, which is expected to increase by as much as 900 percent.As part of its larger fleet expansion strategy, WETA currently has three new ferries on order at the Dakota Creek Industries shipyard in Anacortes, Wash. that are due to enter service next year.

Marine coating major AkzoNobel announced it has declined a third unsolicited, non-binding and conditional proposal submitted by PPG Industries on April 24, 2017, for all outstanding ordinary shares in the capital of AkzoNobel. A statement from AkzoNobel said that it has concluded its own strategy, presented on April 19, 2017, offers a superior route to growth and long-term value creation and is in the best interests of shareholders and all other stakeholders. This decision follows considerable in-depth analysis of PPG’s proposal by the Supervisory Board and Management Board of AkzoNobel, working closely with their financial and legal advisors.

PPG Debuts New Coatings for Steel, Metal Applications

PPG has introduced PSX 800 and PSX 805 coatings for steel and metal surfaces, two next-generation products formulated with greater flexibility and hiding performance than competing polysiloxane coatings. According to PPG, the two new products feature improved flexibility, which enables them to withstand the cracking under stress commonly associated with difficult steel, tank exterior and building exterior applications. PSX 805 coating adds a durable satin-sheen finish that masks imperfections on metal surfaces.

Debuting its latest offering at Posidonia 2016, PPG’s protective and marine coatings business has unveiled a new protective system for dry bulk carrier cargo holds: the PPG SIGMASHIELD MTC system, built on coating technology that comprises a PPG SIGMASHIELD PRIME undercoat and PPG SIGMASHIELD MTC topcoat. Designed specifically for the cargo holds of dry bulk carriers, the system’s chemistry maximizes technical performance and offers a commercially sound solution for spot and full repairs as well as for application at newbuild, PPG said.

PPG Unveils Subsea Coating System

The PPG protective and marine coatings business is introducing and highlight the new PHENGUARD Subsea coating system. The new product combination of PHENGUARD Subsea 610 coating and PHENGUARD Subsea 780 coating is an ideal two-coat subsea system with high-temperature resistance up to 180 C (356 F) for surfaces with or without insulation. “The subsea market is one of the most innovative sectors within the offshore industry, with state-of-the art technologies used for subsea projects worldwide," said Marcel de Haan, PPG global product specialist for subsea coatings. At elevated temperatures, he said, there is a possibility of having a temperature gradient over the coating, which can make coating systems behave differently than in standard conditions.

Pacific Power Group (PPG) is powering a new custom-built vessel for whale watching with Volvo Penta engines, engine monitoring and throttle controls that will improve the experience for Prince of Whales passengers. PPG’s marine team is powering the Salish Sea Dream with four Volvo Penta D13-700 Inboard turbo diesel engines that will each supply 700 HP at 2,300 RPM, providing faster acceleration and better ability to maintain high top speed. This allows Prince of Whales to offer passengers greater whale watching experiences, additional viewing opportunities and extended tours.
