Arpoador Shipyard and Pre-salt FSVs

Logistics hubs and Fast Supply Vessels will be key assets in the complex offshore transport solution Petrobras has devised for moving workers and goods, to and from Brazil’s remote pre-salt plays. Here is a look at a modern local shipyards building the heavy-duty aluminum vessels, with overall lengths ranging from over 30 meters to around 50 meters. Claudio Paschoa, Maritime Reporter’s correspondent in Brazil spoke to Flavio Santarelli, Arpoador Shipyard’s Director of Operations. The logistics involved in transporting supplies and people to the production FPSOs located as far as 300km offshore has been daunting. Offshore logistics hubs…

NOAA and its partners released 3D sonar maps and images of an immigrant steamship lost more than 100 years ago in what many consider the worst maritime disaster in San Francisco history. On Feb. 22, 1901, in a dense morning fog, the SS City of Rio de Janeiro struck jagged rocks near the present site of the Golden Gate Bridge and sank almost immediately, killing 128 of the 210 passengers and crew aboard the ship. Fishermen in the area, hearing the ship’s distress calls, helped rescue 82 survivors, many plucked from makeshift rafts and floating wreckage.

MSC transfers activities in port of Antwerp to Deurganck dock

The MSC shipping company is to consolidate all its activities in the port of Antwerp in the Deurganck dock, on the left bank of the Scheldt. The Port Authority board of directors gave the go-ahead for the move on Monday evening. The transfer is necessary in order to permit further expansion by MSC in Antwerp. The shipping company announced at the end of last year that it wished to have a new location below the locks, not only because its present site in the Delwaide dock had reached saturation point but also because of the increasing size of the ships being introduced. The Deurganck dock was the obvious choice, as it is already used by the other members of the P3 alliance of which MSC forms part, and furthermore the alliance plans to make even greater use of it in future.

The 'LNG Greenrhine'' has been christened by Mrs. Edwige Belliard, president of Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine (CCNR). The LNG Greenrhine is an electrically powered ship with diesel generators fuelled by LNG (Liquid Natural Gas). The use of LNG, compared to the traditional diesel oil, reduces emissions of CO2 and nitrogen oxides (NOx) by more than 25% and 80% respectively. Moreover, no sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particles are released. Due to the configuration of four engines…

Keeping Vessels Moving in the Harshest Conditions

In Seward, Alaska, the rain and snow season starts in September and ends roughly seven months later in April. It is understandable, then, when D.J. Whitman of Seward Ship's Drydock and Ship's Chandlery talks about the shipyard's new covered area for its ship repair and conversion facilities, that there is a certain glee in his voice. "Covered ship repair facilities in (northern climate) European shipyards are pretty common, but not so in the U.S.," said Whitman. The company recently completed a yard upgrade with the installation of a 110 ft. high, 220-ft. long coverered facility, an investment that should pay off handsomely as it will allow work to proceed when weather conditions otherwise might shut them down.
