ABB Breakthrough for Enhanced Reliability Drillship
ABB, a power and automation technology group, has secured an offshore marine industry contract covering electrical power and propulsion systems onboard a DP class 3 Drill Ship to be conferred with "Enhanced Reliability" and Dynpos Autro notation from Det Norske Veritas(DNV). The contract covers installations onboard a BT-UDS dynamic positioned ultra-deep water drill ship ordered by Sigma Drilling, the joint venture between Norway’s Skeie Technology and Houston-based Vantage Drilling, from STX Offshore and Shipbuilding. The vessel, to be built at South Korea’s STX Jinhae yard, is scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2015. Admiral Greenert Dicusses Ship Readiness
Adm. Jonathan Greenert, Commander U.S. Fleet Forces Command recorded a podcast to discuss accountability and fleet readiness, May 20. The Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) is designed to be an objective look and detailed list of all known problems with a ship's physical condition and overall shipboard readiness with rigid standards. But there is an expectation, according to Greenert, that all ships will be ready based on the results of this inspection. "What we need when a ship doesn't do that well is an accounting of what took place, what happened and why," Greenert said. "What's the root cause? Assessments by INSURV are still ongoing as to the underlying causes of two ships' recent failures.
International Coast Guards Geared up For Training
Senior Central American and U.S. Coast Guard officials met in Panama Thursday to discuss the outcome of the first-ever 82-ft. Patrol Boat Round-Up that had been taking place at the old Rodman Naval Base near Panama City. U.S. Coast Guard Vice Adm. James D. U.S. Mobile Training Team Teaches Djiboutian Navy
Personnel from the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa’s (CJTF-HOA) Mobile Training Team (MTT) conducted Preventive Maintenance Systems (PMS) training March 28 with the Djiboutian Navy. The classroom instruction gives Djiboutian Sailors the opportunity to learn high-quality engineering practices for their vessels. The training consisted of setting up and adhering to maintenance schedules. “Introducing them to the Preventive Maintenance System we use on our ships will help them better do their jobs, increase the life expectancy of their equipment and encourage them to be proactive vice reactive when it comes to doing required maintenance,” said Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class (SC) William Hawkins III.
