setec, Royal HaskoningDHV to Manage Canal Seine-Nord Europe

Engineering and consulting firms setec and Royal HaskoningDHV have been selected by VNF – the French navigable waterways authority – to jointly provide programme management assistance over 12 years for a canal link extending from France to Belgium. The vast new Canal Seine-Nord Europe will connect the basin of the Seine near Paris, to the Scheldt, near Lille, giving access to Belgian and Dutch inland waterways networks. Long awaited by the international water transport sector and the European Union, the new canal will be designed for vessels up to 4,400 tonnes capacity. It will eliminate a major bottleneck on the European waterway network and provide links with six seaports to offer an alternative method of transporting freight with access into the heart of large urban areas.

Jeanne Usher has been named managing director of the Sperry Marine business unit, effective immediately inform Northrop Grumman Corporation. Usher succeeds Alan Dix, who recently retired following a distinguished career with the company spanning 33 years. In her new position, Usher will have responsibility for all Sperry Marine's commercial and defence programmes and products worldwide. New VP of Engineering at BMT Designers & Planners

BMT Designers & Planners (BMT), an operating company of BMT Group Ltd, has announced the promotion of Richard (Rich) Celotto who will take the role of Vice President, Engineering. With almost 40 years’ experience of maritime engineering, Richard has been with BMT for 17 years. Having worked extensively with the US Coast Guard’s (USCG) Ship Acquisition Directorate over the last 12 years, he will use his extensive knowledge of ship design, acquisition, repair and programme management to lead BMT’s growing Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering team.

Constuction Commences on Aircraft Carrier "Island"

Construction on the forward island structure for the first Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier began today at BAE Systems’ facility in Portsmouth Naval Base. Employees and guests watched as Second Sea Lord and Commander in Chief Naval Home Command, Vice Admiral Charles Montgomery CBE ADC cut the first steel, formally marking the start of production on the island structure. Housing the bridge and navigation systems for the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers, the forward island is fundamental to the effective command and control of the vessel.

Offshore Contract for Noble Denton and GL

Noble Denton and Germanischer Lloyd (GL) will support European leading utilities cooperative Trianel GmbH with technical support and project management of its 400 MW offshore wind farm Borkum West II. The installation of the first phase is scheduled to start in 2011/2012. It consists of 40 of the planned 80 turbines on the site and the Offshore Substation. The wind farm will be located approximately 45 km north of the German island of Borkum. The site is immediately adjacent to the smaller Alpha Ventus site which is currently under development. Noble Denton will support Trianel during the pre-construction phase project development and will be in charge with the appropriate project management systems.

Northrop Grumman to Supply PMS

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been chosen to provide the Platform Management System (PMS) for the next Royal Navy Astute-Class submarine, HMS Audacious. BAE Systems has selected Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine business unit as the preferred bidder to supply the PMS for the fourth Astute-Class submarine. The PMS will control and monitor platform machinery and on-board systems. Based on Sperry Marine’s innovative approach to configuring commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and software to meet exacting military and commercial applications, the PMS for Astute Boat 4 will reduce costs and minimise programme risk.
