Hamburg shipowning and management group Bernhard Schulte has signed a contract for the acquisition of 100% of the shares in the prestigious LNG ship manager PRONAV - subject to merger approval of the German Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt). The worldwide operating Schulte Group owns about 100 vessels (mainly container, tanker, bulker) and manages 600 vessels in all segments. PRONAV, based in Hamburg, is an internationally renowned ship manager specialized in large LNG tonnage. Schulte Group is currently providing management services for 23 LNG carriers and has one LNG bunkering vessel and one 174,000cbm LNG carrier on order which will join the Schulte fleet in 2018.

ProNav, the Norwegian distributor for Japan Radio Company Ltd. (JRC), was awarded a contract for supplying twenty two ECDIS systems to the entire fleet of Norwegian shipowner Misje Rederi AS. All eleven dual-systems will be supplied and commissioned by Brommeland Elektronikk AS, a part of ProNav's professional sales- and service network. Three of the world’s largest LNG-carriers successfully tested their propulsion packages at the end of last month. Each vessel is powered by two 6S70ME-C electronically controlled, two-stroke, lowspeed diesel engines, and this event marks a first for MAN Diesel in the LNG sector. The engines will operate on HFO. The vessels are part of a Qatargas project that comprises an impressive 45 vessels, each fitted with two MAN B&W low-speed prime movers, making for a grand total of 90 electronically controlled two-stroke engines. Of these, 31 QFlex carriers will receive two MAN B&W 6S70ME-C engines, each developing 18,660 kW, while the 14 larger QMax carriers will employ two MAN B&W 7S70ME-C engines, each rated at 21,770 kW at 91 rpm.

Qatargas has named the first two Q-Flex LNG vessels - Al Ruwais and Al Safliya - at a ceremony held at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Ltd. (DSME) ship building yard in Geoje Island. The ceremony which was presided over by His Excellency Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Energy and Industry and Mr. Neil Duffin, President of ExxonMobil Development Co. officially named the two ships which are the first of 45 large LNG ships to be delivered for Qatar. The Al Ruwais and Al Safliya will be used to ship LNG produced in Qatargas 2, Train 4 to customers in Europe. They are the first of 14 ships that are being built in Korea to service Qatargas Trains 4 and 5.

Natural gas importer Petronet LNG Ltd (PLL) plans to float a shipping subsidiary overseas to haul gas to its greenfield re-gassification terminal of 2.5 million tonnes per annum capacity proposed at Kochi in Kerala. U.S officer and seamen jobs on six liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers will be retained after the tankers are reflagged from the U.S. The merchant marine jobs will be guaranteed to American officers and seamen through 2004, according to two agreements announced last week. The agreements were signed by the American Maritime Officers (AMO) union, the Seafarers International Union (SIU) and PRONAV Ship Management, which manages the ships for BLNG Inc. Under the agreements, AMO will fill eight officer berths on the six vessels, and SIU will retain all of the existing billets for the unlicensed crewmen. "Today's unprecedented agreements represent a commitment to American labor," said Michael Dyer, senior partner at Dyer Ellis & Joseph, the law firm representing PRONAV and BLNG.
