Interlake Steamship Bulk Carrier Repowered

The newly repowered M/V Herbert C. Jackson departed Fraser Shipyards in Superior, Wis., yesterday giving a farewell salute to the Twin Ports where it has been undergoing its steam-to-diesel conversion since December 21. As the last steam-powered ship in Interlake Steamship Company’s fleet, the conversion of the Herbert C. Jackson represents the final phase of the company’s decade-long modernization program to create the most efficient, reliable and environmentally responsible fleet on the Great Lakes. Corvus Energy to Power UK Hybrid Ferry

Corvus Energy Inc. has announced that Wärtsilä, provider of ship machinery, propulsion and maneuvering solutions, has selected Corvus Energy as the supplier of the lithium ion based energy storage system (ESS) for a new hybrid ferry being built for UK based Wightlink Ferries. Corvus Energy will supply its Orca Energy ESS solution to compliment a comprehensive range of modern Wärtsilä equipment and systems, which will deliver industry leading environmental efficiency with this new vessel. The new ferry, entering into service in 2018, will serve the crossing between the Isle of Wight and the English mainland 20 times per day, holding up to 178 vehicles and over 1000 passengers.

Wind Propulsion Innovation Award Winners Selected

The Wind Propulsion Innovation Awards were created by the International Windship Association (IWSA) to honor the pioneers of technological innovation in wind propulsion striving to support the shipping industry to decarbonizes whilst maintaining commercial and operational performance. The IWSA Awards sought to spotlight both individuals and companies making a significant difference in advancing wind propulsion in the maritime sector. In July some 40 nominations were received at IWSA headquarters. These were assessed and shortlisted by a panel of experts drawn from across the shipping sector.

Rolls-Royce to Equip Five New Cruise Ships

Rolls-Royce has announced a new deal to provide propulsion and deck machinery to five cruise ships being built by Fincantieri at their Monfalcone and Ancona Shipyards in Italy. The firm orders are to supply a Promas system, deck machinery and steering gear to two vessels being built for Viking Ocean Cruises. The contract also covers steering gear and deck machinery for a further vessel under construction for Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Steering gear is also being provided for two vessels being built for Princess.

Siemens Supplies Propulsion for Saga Cruises Newbuild

Siemens announced it has been awarded a contract to equip the first new build cruise liner for the British based operator Saga Cruises under contract to Meyer Werft in Papenburg. The awarded package includes a SISHIP eSiPOD propulsion system as well as a power and distribution plant. This new cruise ship to be delivered in the summer of 2019 will be 236 meters long and 31.2 meters wide with a gross tonnage (GT) of 56,850 and will offer capacity of 999 passengers. The contract includes an option to equip one additional cruise liner potentially due for delivery in 2021.

First Carrousel-RAVE Tug Under Construction in Hamburg

Construction of the first Carrousel-RAVE tug has begun at Theodor Buschmann Shipyard in Hamburg. This novel design features the Robert Allan Ltd. and Voith Turbo GmbH & Co. KG developed RAVE propulsion with drives arranged inline along the centreline of the hull, and the Novatug patented Carrousel Towing System installed on the main deck. This unique combination of propulsion and towing arrangements results in inherently safer towing and escort operations, with enhanced maneuvrability for operations in confined waterways and other generally tight spaces.

US Navy Orders 2 More EPF Ships from Austal

Austal USA said it was awarded a $326 million contract to built the 11th and 12th Expeditionary Fast Transport ships (EPF) for the U.S. Navy. This new contract adds upon a 2008 fully-funded EPF 10-ship block-buy agreement and brings Austal’s current build to a 12 ship program valued at $1.9 billion, and thereby extending the shipbuilder’s production under contract into 2022. Austal USA’s EPF program has seen seven ships delivered so far, with three more under construction at its headquarters and ship manufacturing facility in Mobile, Ala.

ABB Debuts New Azipod Propulsion Model

ABB’s newly launched Azipod propulsion unit is said to be up to 10 percent more efficient than previous versions. ABB hopes to expand the appeal of the podded electric propulsion system beyond established markets with its improved efficiency and bollard pull. According to ABB, the new linear flow Azipod XL achieves this jump in efficiency by introducing a nozzle with stator plates, which directs the water flow from the propeller to reduce the turbulence and energy loss and to give the optimum thrust for the vessel.

The newest and most technologically advanced surface warship, future USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000), departed Maine shipyard Bath Iron Works September 7, marking the beginning of a three-month journey to its new homeport in San Diego. Crewed by 147 sailors, the stealthy, powerful and lethal Zumwalt is the lead ship of the U.S. Navy’s next-generation class of multimission destroyers. They are capable of performing critical maritime missions and enhance the Navy’s ability to provide deterrence, power projection and sea control. Named for Adm. Elmo R.

Catamaran Ferry Delivered to Hyline Cruises

Incat Crowther has announced the launch of Grey Lady IV, the fourth catamaran ferry designed by Incat Crowther and built by Gladding Hearn for Hyline Cruises of Hyannis, Massachusetts. The new vessel was commissioned in response to increased ridership and a passenger preference for a fast service with better amenity, and is an evolutionary step from the three previous vessels from the designer / builder collaboration. The 47m catamaran is the largest in the fleet with additional passenger capacity, an increased luggage space and a VIP lounge.

Wartsila Wins Deal for Four LNG Tankers

Wärtsilä will deliver a comprehensive scope of marine solutions from its own portfolio to four new LNG fuelled tankers for Swedish owners

Wärtsilä has been awarded a contract covering four newbuild tanker vessels. The ships are to be built at the Avic Dingheng shipyard in China, on behalf of three Swedish owners; Furetank (two vessels), Älvtank, and Thun Tankers, a fully owned subsidiary of Thunbolagen. The vessels will be commercially managed by Furetank Chartering in the Gothia Tanker Alliance. The contracts were signed in the second quarter of 2016. The ships will fulfil the IMO's Tier III requirements and will be fuelled primarily by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The scope of Wärtsilä's supply to this project is extensive.

The U.S. Navy’s newest and most technologically advanced surface ship, future USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000), pulled into Naval Station Norfolk Wednesday for another port visit as part of its three-month journey to its new homeport in San Diego. Crewed by 147 Sailors, Zumwalt is the lead ship of a class of next-generation multi-mission destroyers designed to strengthen naval power. They are capable of performing critical maritime missions and enhance the Navy's ability to provide deterrence, power projection and sea control.

Kongsberg Refit Helps Old VLCC 'GoGreen'

Kongsberg Maritime has completed an extensive refit of a 21-year-old Main Engine, Remote Control System aboard a VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) during the vessel’s scheduled docking. The original Main Engine, Remote Control System installed at a newbuilding yard in Japan was de-commissioned and the latest Kongsberg AutoChief 600 was commissioned by a Dedicated Refit Team. The advanced AutoChief 600 is designed to manage all control, safety and alarm functions necessary for operating the main engine and all other accessories for propulsion control from a single station on the bridge.

Built Built by Austal Ships, Rashid Behbudov, sistership to the Muslim Magomeyev and the second Incat Crowther 70m Catamaran Fast Crew Boat, has been delivered for Caspian Marine Services. Muslim Magomayev, the first of this design developed by Incat Crowther, was built by Incat Tasmania and delivered to CMS in 2014. Both Muslim Magomayev and Rashid Behbedov are engineered for the Ampelmann walk-to-work system, which transfers crew to offshore platforms in day-to-day operation as well as in emergency situations.

Vard Electro Bags Contract in India

Vard Electro AS, a subsidiary of Vard Holdings Limited, has secured a new contract for the delivery of an equipment and electrical installation package to Cochin Shipyard Ltd. for a vessel under construction for the Government of India. Contracted by the yard in August 2015 and expected to become operational in 2018, the vessel with a length of approximately 120 meters will be equipped with several of VARD’s SeaQ products and systems. The contract includes engineering to support the shipyard in the approvals process, delivery of a SeaQ Electric Propulsion and Integrated Automation System (IAS) package, SeaQ Bridge systems, complete generator sets, and the complete electrical installation on board the vessel. The value of the contract is approximately 150 MNOK.

Sovcomflot, ABB to set-up Center at Admiral Nevelskoy MSU

PAO Sovcomflot, Asea Brown Boveri Ltd. (ABB) Company and the Admiral Nevelskoy Maritime State University (MSU) have signed an agreement for research, technological and educational partnership. The document provides for the establishment of the Marine Propulsion Simulation Centre at MSU in Vladivostok. The operations of this centre which will be focused on preparing staff for work on vessels equipped with Azipod propulsion units. The agreement was signed by Sergey Frank, President and CEO of Sovcomflot, Sergey Ogay, Rector of MSU, and Anatoly Popov, Managing Director of ABB in Russia.

New Azipod Thruster Launched by ABB

Power and automation technology group ABB has introduced Azipod D, a new addition to its line of Azipod electric propulsion offering, allowing a wider range of vessel types to utilize the Azipod propulsion system. ABB’s gearless Azipod propulsion system is already used on cruise vessels, icebreakers, ice-going cargo vessels and offshore accommodation ships. With the Azipod D, shipping segments such as offshore drilling, construction and support vessels and ferries will have even more choices to make use of Azipod propulsion technology, ABB said.

GE Power Conversion Comes Up Trumps in 'MSC Preziosa' Trials

'MSC Preziosa' successfully completes sea trials with its GE Power Conversion electrical power & propulsion system. Built from the STX yard in Saint-Nazaire, France, MSC Preziosa is the latest ship in MSC’s Fantasia-class and the 12th in the MSC fleet. The vessel has recently completed a series of sea trials including propulsion and maneuverability (speed ranges, full speed, crash stop, power plant and propulsion interactions, full/partial propulsion configurations) as well as noise and vibration measurements.
