Rolls-Royce to Supply mtu Engines for Four Hybrid Tugs in Brazil

Rolls-Royce announced it has secured a contract to supply eight of its mtu 16V 4000 M65L engines for four 80-ton bollard pull tugboats to be built by Detroit Brasil, Ltda. and operated by Starnav Servicos Maritimos Ltda. The new tugs will feature a hybrid propulsion system, combining the mtu engines and mtu Blue Vision New Generation (BVNG) monitoring system with Z-drive thrusters, hybrid components and controls from Schottel, a manufacturer of propulsion and steering systems…

Kongsberg to Equip Two New Ferries in Tasmania

Kongsberg Maritime (KM) announced it has been awarded a contract with Finnish shipyard Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) to deliver propulsion and steering equipment for two new car and passenger ferries. The vessels will be operated by the Australian company TT-Line for the regular Spirit of Tasmania ferry service – a 10.5-hour journey across the Bass Strait between Melbourne, Victoria and Devonport, Tasmania.Each vessel will be fitted with two of KM’s Promas combined propulsion and steering systems…

Schottel Propels WSA Diving Bell ship

Schottel, a manufacturer of propulsion and steering systems for ships and offshore applications, said that the new diving bell ship from the Duisburg waterway and shipping authority (WSA Duisburg) is equipped with its propulsion units.Two rudder-propellers and a pump jet enable maximum maneuverability in narrow waterways, said a press release.The special vessel is being built at the Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Gorinchem. The order was placed by FMSW Koblenz for the federal waterways and shipping administration.The diving bell ship is powered by a total of three azimuth thrusters, two rudder-propellers and a pump jet. Schottel Merges Tidal Units to Sustainable Marine Energy

President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidential yacht, Potomac, is once again plying the waters of San Francisco Bay after undergoing a maintenance drydocking at Bay Ship and Yacht in Alameda, Calif. Long known as the “Floating White House,” she served as the presidential yacht until his death in 1945. She has a storied past from her start as a Presidential yacht to the King’s yacht (Elvis Presley) and several other lives in-between. Now under management of the Potomac Association, she is under constant care and refurbishment to combat the elements of time.

Was the closing of the Houston Ship Channel for over three days in March 2015 due to the use of Ultra Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (ULSFO)? After reviewing the testimony, and evidentiary material presented by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) regarding the 2015 Conti Peridot’s collision with the Carla Maersk, it is the authors' opinion the report fails to address significant contributing factors. The NTSB has overlooked a serious threat to vessel operations throughout the world.

SCHOTTEL Debuts EcoPeller with High-torque Gears

Propulsion and steering systems manufacturer SCHOTTEL has unveiled its new EcoPeller (SRE), which it said offers improved efficiency and robustness. Playing a key role here is the new HTG (High Torque Gear) gearbox technology developed and patented by SCHOTTEL. According to SCHOTTEL, HTG is a highly-efficient, robust and reliable gearbox with an ideal gearing geometry. It features low maintenance requirements, reduces servicing costs and also allows streamlined housings for improved hydrodynamic properties. The HTG enables bevel gears of the same dimensions to transmit up to 15 percent higher drive torque with the same safety margins required by the classification societies, SCHOTTEL said.

SCHOTTEL Enters 2016 with Bag of Orders

SCHOTTEL, a manufacturer of propulsion and steering systems for ships and offshore applications, reports it has entered into 2016 with a bag full of new orders. The December orders underpin again the role the German manufacturer plays in the tug market. SCHOTTEL closed 2015 with eight orders for ASD tugs and a Rotor Tug with bollard pulls from 50 to 80 tons. The orders are covering the whole range of vessel types – tugs, four double-ended ferries, fishery patrol ships, survey vessels for inland waterways, seismic research vessels and yachts.

Great Lakes Shipyard Completes USACE Repairs

Great Lakes Shipyard announced it has completed a multi-vessel drydocking and repair contract for the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Detroit District Floating Plant, and all vessels were redelivered on December 28, 2015. This was the first time the Detroit District Floating Plant has been drydocked using Great Lakes Shipyard’s 700 metric ton capacity Marine Travelift. The shipyard hauled out Tug Demolen and Deck Scow BC-6576 on October 26, 2015 and Crane Barge Veler on October 27, 2015.

Great Lakes Shipyard has been awarded a contract by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Detroit District for the drydocking and repairs of the Floating Plant, based at the Detroit Field Station. The shipyard will perform routine drydocking, maintenance and repairs of the Tug DEMOLEN, Crane Barge VELER, and Deck Scow BC-6576. In addition to drydocking the vessels, work includes underwater hull cleaning and maintenance; inspection of propulsion and steering systems; sea valves maintenance; bearing inspections; and other routine cleaning, maintenance and repairs.

Houston Ship Channel, Lower Galveston Bay, Texas. The visibility was restricted at the time due to fog. The bulk carrier was inbound to Houston, traveling in a north direction. The tow was bound for Port Bolivar on the east side of the Houston Ship Channel, traveling in an east direction.

SCHOTTEL Inc. USA inaugurates new service location in Houma, La.; new SCHOTTEL subsidiary sales office in Australia. With an inauguration ceremony SCHOTTEL opened new facilities in Houma, Louisiana in October 2013. As an answer to the growing request for new SCHOTTEL propulsion systems and the steadily growing population of drives on the market the German manufacturer moved from St. Rose, La. to new facilities in Houma, La. The new spacious premises offer a large administration area and state of the art service halls equipped with heavy lift cranes especially suitable for large units.

50 Years of Schottel Controllable Pitch Propellers

Controllable-pitch propellers have been developed and produced on the Baltic coast of Germany since 1962 – initially in Rostock, and then in Wismar from 1964. The first units were manufactured for 86 freezer-trawlers of type Tropik for the Soviet Union. Four further types were produced for GDR fishery vessels. The first years of controllable-pitch propeller production in Wismar centered on systems with a power rating of 1,930 kW for 199 freezer-trawlers of type Atlantik. A total of 230 controllable-pitch propeller systems were delivered up to the end of 1969.

Schottel Introduce New Generation Large Thrusters

Schottel characterize their new generation of Rudderpropellers (SRP) and Twin Propellers (STP) as 'Compact, modular & performance-optimized'. SRP and STP are available with a variety of reduction ratios to suit all common input speeds regardless of whether they are driven by a diesel engine or an electric motor, and the thruster housing has been optimized using CFD techniques and model tests. The thruster is even more compact than the existing models and is a practically self-contained system requiring only a minimum of mechanical and electrical interfacing. The new thruster series offers a high commonality of parts throughout the different reduction ratios – resulting in enhanced spare parts availability.
