Future USS Carl Levin Completes Acceptance Trials

The future USS Carl M. Levin (DDG 120) completed acceptance trials on December 9, returning to General Dynamics Corp’s Bath Iron Works (BIW) Bath shipyard after spending two days at sea.During acceptance trials, the ship and its crew performed a series of demonstrations for review by the U.S. Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV). These demonstrations are used by INSURV to validate the quality of construction and compliance with Navy specifications and requirements prior to delivery of the ship to the U.S. Navy.

Wärtsilä Engines Selected for CGN's New Ferries

Marine and technology provider Wärtsilä said it will supply the engines and related emissions control after-treatment systems for two new passenger ferries being built for operation between Switzerland and France across Lake Geneva. Dellner Brakes: Serving Inland and Coastal Waterways Markets

A luffing and trolley travel hoist for bagged material used by two vessel loaders at Lake Charles, Louisiana. The hoists are fitted with Dellner SKP service brakes with mounting stands installed between the hoist motors and the reduction gears. The brakes were also manufactured with extra protection to prevent corrosion from sea water.

Dellner provides a range of clutch and braking products for the inland (brown water) and coastal workboat markets. Dellner products are used in a wide range of workboats including tugs, fishing boats and coast guard vessels. Major customers include US Seafoods, Trident Seafoods, Pesca Azteca, Frabelle Fishing, Western Rivers, ARTCO, Campbell Transportation, Moran Towing, Crowley Maritime, Excell Marine, Hunter Marine, Canal Barge, Andrie, Foss Maritime, Kirby Corporation, Sause Bros and Seaspan.

USS Rafael Peralta Completes Acceptance Trials

The future USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115) successfully completed acceptance trials Dec. 16 after spending two days underway off the coast of Maine. The U.S. Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) reviewed the ship and its crew during a series of demonstrations while underway. INSURV evaluates the ship's construction and compliance with Navy specifications and is the governing body that recommends the ship be delivered to the Navy. The trials were conducted both pier-side and underway. Many of the ship's onboard systems tested to validate performance, including navigation, damage control, mechanical and electrical systems, combat systems, communications, and propulsion applications, met or exceeded Navy specifications.

Huntington Ingalls Industries Delivers DDG 113

The John Finn (DDG 113) destroyer was delivered to the United States Navy by Huntington Ingalls Industries on December 7, 2016, the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Powered by GE’s Marine Solutions’ LM2500 marine gas turbines, the ship’s namesake helped shoot down Japanese warplanes during the attack and was the first Medal of Honor recipient of World War II. "GE is proud that our LM2500 marine gas turbines power the first new construction Arleigh Burke-class ship to go to sea in over four years,” said Brien Bolsinger, GE Vice President, Marine Operations, Evendale, Ohio.

GE Gas Turbines to Power Indian Stealth Frigate

GE’s Marine Solutions announced that its LM2500 marine gas turbines will power the Indian Navy’s P17A stealth frigate. The LM2500 gas turbines will be provided by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Industrial and Marine Gas Turbine division, Bangalore, India under license from GE. Wärtsilä Integrated Solutions for Maersk's AHTS Vessels

A new series of six Anchor Handling Tug Supply vessels to be built at the Kleven Verft AS in Norway for the Danish based Maersk Supply Service A/S - part of the A. P. Møller-Mærsk Group, will feature fully integrated solutions from Wärtsilä. There is an option for an additional four vessels within this series. The contract with Wärtsilä was signed in November. The 95 metre long vessels will be utilised in deep water offshore oilfield operations, with reliability, safety, and uptime specified as being priority requirements. Wärtsilä's responsibility encompasses the complete power generation solution, electrical distribution and drives system, vessel automation system and propulsion system.

Waterjets Manufacturing Comes Stateside

Thrustmaster’s deal with DOEN brings waterjet manufacturing to the United States. Marine propulsion and thruster manufacturer Thrustmaster of Texas, Inc. announced a deal earlier this year to acquire the technology of DOEN, an Australian designer and manufacturer of waterjet propulsion systems. The deal is significant in that it makes Thrustmaster the only producer of commercial waterjets in the United States, helping the Houston-based company to expand upon an already strong line of commercial marine propulsion offerings.

Good News Comes in Threes

Caterpillar, Wärtsilä and Volvo Penta introduce new, efficient and environmentally compliant engines. A crowded market becomes even more competitive. Forget all the worries about how industry would be able to comply with the coming changes to the regulatory scheme that affects marine propulsion and related emissions. Demand has met supply and it has done so robustly and in impressive form. And, if the past month is any indication, the innovation in the market is more than keeping up. Caterpillar Develops Second Dual Fuel Engine

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems announce the development of the MaK M 34 DF, a new marine dual fuel engine platform for the commercial marine industry. The M 34 DF dual fuel engine boasts a power rating of 500 kW per cylinder at 720 and 750 rpm in diesel and gas modes, and will share the same footprint as the highly successful M 32 C engine series. The M 34 DF will be capable of running on natural gas as an alternative to marine diesel oil or large and complex scrubber installations for Emission Control Areas (ECA) operation as of 2015. First engine deliveries are foreseen for October 2014.

Contrapel's Above the Water-Line Propeller System

Marine propulsion research & development company, Contrapel Ltd has released details of its new propulsion system for boats – the system set to make future boats more economical, manoeuvrable, safer, stronger and better for the environment. The high-speed propeller was invented over 170 years ago and has dominated the propulsion market ever since. Despite 60 years of development, water-jets have struggled to make significant inroads. Wärtsilä Awarded Pacific Radiance Contract

Wärtsilä is to supply complete and fully integrated power generation and propulsion packages for three vessels being built for Pacific Radiance Ltd., the Singapore based company specialising in offshore service activities. In each case, the company’s main requirements were to achieve greater efficiency, better fuel consumption, and lower emission levels. The orders were received during the second quarter of 2012. Two 86 metre, Platform Supply Vessels (PSV) are to be built at the Huang Pu shipyard in China, while the Zhenjiang shipyard, also in China, will build a hybrid Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessel with more than 210 Ton Bollard Pull (TBP).

Doen Water Jet Order from Willard Marine

Transmission Engineering Company (TECO) announced they have received an order for thirty Doen DJ110Z Water Jets from Willard Marine, in Anaheim, Calif. The water jets will be installed in Willard Marine’s 36-ft Rigid Inflatable Boat for the U.S. Navy. The order includes water jets, hydraulic pumps and steering components, with deliveries being completed by March 2011. “Our ability to respond quickly is one of the many values we bring as a business partner with Willard Marine”, said Phil Watson, TECO’s General Manger. Doen Water Jets are currently in operation throughout many countries in the world, with some Doen Water Jets casted with TWIN DISC on the reverse bucket. TECO is a primary distributor of Doen Water Jets, Controls and Steering Systems for U.S. marine propulsion applications.

PRI Treatment Helps Meet Emissions Challenges

Power Research Inc. (PRI) is a manufacturer of industrial grade fuel treatments designed to treat heavy fuel oil, diesel and gasoline. Founded in 1985, PRI chemistries incorporate proprietary thermal stability technologies that permit cleaner combustion, reduced emissions, and prevention of deposits on engine components and boiler tubes. Pick Your Power

The inherent diversity of the multitude of vessels plying rivers, lakes, harbors and oceans around the world extends past size and shape and type of service - at the heart of each vessel is a propulsion system. Although propulsion systems may often be considered unique, a variety of typical solutions for most types of vessels already exist. In some cases, it may be preferable to simply specify the duplication of an existing propulsion system, allowing a degree of harmonization in the number of required spares, trained mechanics, and maintenance. It would seem, however, that ship owners and operators are placing an increased premium on designs and solutions both unique and innovative, in order to reduce costs and maximize performance.
