New Vessel Delivered for Navimag Ferries

Navimag Ferries’ newest vessel, Esperanza, has been delivered.The 150-meter-long vessel can carry up to 274 passengers and has 1,800 vehicle lane meters. It will operate exclusively in Chile, sailing between Puerto Montt and Puerto Natales, and providing a transportation link with Chile's south, in addition to ferry cruising in the Patagonian fjords.The newbuild's propulsion system includes two Wärtsilä 20 main engines, two Wärtsilä controlled pitch propellers (CPP) and two Wärtsilä gearboxes.

Chile Earthquake - Ports Status

Chile's government has declared a state of emergency in the central region struck by Wednesday's earthquake, the biggest to hit the country since 2010 and the most powerful in the world this year. The 8.3-magnitude tremor struck off the coast of Coquimbo, 46km west of Illapel, at 19:54 local time (22:54 GMT) on Wednesday evening. Tsunami waves hit the coast at Coquimbo and further out from the epicentre, with waves half a metre higher than usual as far north as La Punta. Small tsunamis were also reported along the west coast of the USA and Canada, as far away as Alaska. A powerful aftershock estimated to be close to 8 on the Richter scale shook the central part of Chile yesterday afternoon (17 September). All ships were again ordered to leave port ahead of a possible tsunami.

Chilean Port Workers Strike

Port workers in Chile have been on strike since the afternoon of Tuesday, July 8 in respect of a dispute over a new law which affects workers' lunch and rest breaks, Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) advises. The strike, organized by the Union Portuaria, is affecting a number of ports and disrupted operations are primarily impacting container and dry cargos. The strike will be indefinite until ongoing negotiations between the Union and the Chilean Government can be resolved. All port operations in the following ports are currently affected: Iquique…

IMO Exceptional Bravery Awards

The IMO Council has decided that the award will go to Sergeant Janick Gilbert (posthumously), Master Corporal Max Lahaye-Lemay and Master Corporal Marco Journeyman, crew members of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s 424 (Transport and Rescue) Squadron, nominated by the Government of Canada; and to Mr. César Flores Flores, a rescue swimmer in the aerial detachment of the Chilean Navy, nominated by the Government of Chile. Sergeant Janick Gilbert (posthumously), Master Corporal Max Lahaye-Lemay and Master Corporal Marco Journeyman were nominated for saving the lives of two Inuit hunters, who were stranded in an open boat in icy waters near Igloolik…

MTU Series 4000 Engines Power New SAAM Tugs

The newest two tug boats of the Chilean work boat operator SAAM will be powered by two MTU 16V 4000 M61 engines each vessel. The ASD tugs, both 98.4 ft of total length, have been designed and built by the Detroit Chile Shipyard in Puerto Montt in Chile. The Caranca and Chucao named boats reach a maximum bollard pull of 65 tons, are equipped with HRP rudder propellers and will operate in harbour and offshore services among the coast line of Chile. SAAM as one of the biggest tug boat service suppliers in South America is operating more than 125 vessels all over the continent.

Cruise Vessel for Chilean Patagonia

The coastal scenery of Chile’s Patagonia supports a growing cruise industry that welcomed its latest entrant when the MV Atmosphere was launched at the Astilleros y Servicios Navales S.A. (ASENAV) shipyard at Valdivia in the South of Chile. The owners of the new 45 by 10-meter ship are promising deluxe accommodation for 36 passengers to be cared for by a crew of 24. Following her November delivery, the ship will cruise the central and southern Chilean Patagonia, covering over 750 kilometers/405 nautical miles from the bay of Puerto Montt (latitude 41°28' S and longitude 72°56' W) to the Taitao peninsula (latitude 46°41' S and longitude 73°57' W).

BP Marine Establishes Presence In Chile

BP Marine has opened a new supply network in Chile offering a full lubricant supply facility at 14 ports along the Chilean coast from Puerto Montt in the South - to Iquique located further North. Coordinating local blending of a core range of marine lubricants, the BP marine network in Latin America will operate out of Santiago de Chile, managing the supply and distribution of marine lubricants. Local stocks will be situated in strategic locations to provide for the 14 major Chilean coast ports. According to Alberto Julio, who is managing the BP Chile operation, the network will offer a service to BP International shipping customers requiring replacement products in Chile, as well as supplying the local coastal shipping industry.
