A few weeks ago I was talking to some professional fire fighters and was regaled with EV fire fighting disasters. They told me that EV caught fire all the time, that EV fires were much more dangerous than gasoline fires, and that fire trucks could not carry enough water to put out an EV fire. When I asked if they had fought any EV fires, they told me their information came from reliable sources and then asked me if I would park my Chevy Bolt in my garage. They focused on my Chevy Bolt, since it is widely regarded as a fire hazard.

Newbuild spend for vehicle carriers, including large car and truck carriers (LCTC), pure car and truck carriers (PCTC) and pure car carriers (PCC), smashed past $3.2 billion last week, following big volume orders from Eastern Pacific and Zodiac—an astonishing amount of money for a niche sector, exceeding the previous six years total combined. If we include options, a whopping $4.4 billion has been agreed year to date. Japanese shipyards have raised tariffs to $100 million for dual fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) 7,000 car equivalent units (CEU), up by a staggering $10 million compared to last year. Chinese yards have followed but maintain a healthy discount quoting $88 million for an equivalent spec.

NYK has become the first Japanese shipping company to realize a carbon-neutral voyage by offsetting 5,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), equivalent to the CO2 emitted by NYK’s environmental flagship car carrier Aries Leader during one voyage between Japan and the Middle East.Aries Leader is equipped with the latest energy-saving technologies, reducing CO2 emissions per unit by 30% compared with existing large pure car carriers (i.e., comparing emissions on a per car basis). Global Shipping Industry Delivers Comments to Official Consultation on Proposed Modifications to Panama Canal Tolls.The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is conducting a public consultation on a proposal to adjust the Panama Canal tolls for containerships, vehicle carriers, dry bulk carriers, tankers, chemical carriers, LPG and LNG vessels, passenger vessels and small vessels. The proposed new toll charges are anticipated to enter into effect on 1 January 2020, the same day as the IMO ‘Global Sulphur Cap’ regulation.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL)  is to increase the roll-out of Inmarsat’s Fleet Xpress Service, across the remainder of its owned and managed fleet. The Japanese shipping company was among the earliest adopters of Fleet Xpress; deploying Inmarsat’s global high-speed broadband connectivity on the majority of its Car-Carriers in 2016, shortly after the launch of the next-generation service. NYK has started a new car transport service “Ruffles Ao Dai RORO Express (REX)” linking Hai Phong in Northern Vietnam with Ho Chi Minh and Laem Chabang (near Bangkok). On October 8, the NYK-operated car carrier Modern Link arrived in Hai Phong for the first call. And the ceremony to commemorate was held attended by the top managements of the Port of Hai Phong, Tan Vu Terminal, among others. The previous service for Northern Vietnam called at the port of Cai Lan is once a month. Now the new service calls the port of Hai Phong, which is close to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, and increases the number of calls to twice a month. Switching to more sustainable shipping has been made easier for ship owners and operators following the launch of Intersleek 1000, a new biocide-free fouling control coating developed by AkzoNobel’s Marine Coatings business. Offering fuel and CO2 savings of up to 6 percent*, the new product – part of the company’s International range – is the first fouling control coating to be based on Lanion technology. The patented technology incorporates bio-renewable raw material that helps to deliver enhanced vessel performance, so that hulls coated with Intersleek 1000 maintain an ultra-smooth surface, reducing drag and lowering fuel consumption and emissions.

DNV GL has issued a report on fire incidents in Ro-Ro spaces to address growing safety concerns in this segment and provide guidance to shipowners. DNV GL’s “Fires on Ro-Ro decks” has examined fires within Ro-Ro spaces on Ro-Pax vessels, vehicle carriers and general Ro-Ro cargo vessels and has identified 35 such fires between 2005 and 2016. A previous DNV GL paper on Ro-Ro fires, published in 2005, had counted 25 fires in Ro-Ro spaces between 1990 and 2003. “We would like to contribute with facts, as well as with our experience. Hopefully, this can be useful input to operators and legislators in order to focus on the relevant items and make the right decisions,” says Hans Eivind Siewers, Segment Director Passenger Ships & Ro-Ro at DNV GL – Maritime.

MacGregor has received orders from two Japanese yards to deliver comprehensive RoRo access equipment packages for four car carriers. The equipment will be delivered during Q3 in 2017. The orders are booked into the first quarter 2016 order intake.   The car carriers are built at two shipyards; two 7,400 CEU pure car/truck carriers (PCTCs) at Shin Kurushima Dockyard and two 3,000 pure car carriers (PCC) at Nakai Zosen Corporation.    "We have a proven record of reliable deliveries and excellent support and relationship with these Japanese shipyards," says Mattias Gunnarsson, Director of Sales and Marketing, MacGregor RoRo. "Our RoRo access systems ensure efficient and safe cargo handling operation of the vessels," Mr Gunnarsson adds.

The Ministry of Shipping has taken many proactive and progressive interventions in the areas of shipbuilding, port development, inland waterways and coastal shipping this year for the development of the maritime sector in the country. The key initiatives includes  Sagarmala Project, Special Purpose Vehicle to provide efficient last mile rail connectivity to Major Ports, Incentive for Shipbuilding and ship-repair Industry,  Jal Marg Vikas Project, Customs and Excise Duty Exempted on the Use of Bunker Fuels for coastal transportation of EXIM and empty container and for domestic containers transported alongwith EXIM and empty containers, Cabotage Relaxed for Special Vessels and Developing 78 lighthouses as tourism centers.

Vessel operators can now be allowed to bring foreign flagged vessels on the coastal routes as the Indian Government has decided to relax cabotage for special vessels. Special vessels like Roll-On Roll-Off (Ro-Ro), Hybrid Roll-On Roll-Off (Hybrid Ro-Ro), Roll-On Roll-Off cum Passenger (Ro-Pax), Pure Car Carriers, Pure Car and Truck Carriers, LNG vessels and Over-Dimensional cargo or Project Cargo Carriers have been relaxed cabotage for a period of five years, a Ministry statement said. The development comes in the wake of long standing demand of the shipping industry for relaxation of the cabotage law. Cabotage is transport of goods between two points in the same country.

NYK says it has taken delivery of the new high-tech pure car carrier (PCC), 'Aries Leader', built by Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co. Ltd. With a capacity of 7,000 units, the new carrier includes the latest energy-saving technology including a hull air-lubrication system and a hybrid turbocharger — both of which, says NYK have been installed on a car carrier for the first time — in addition to an electronically controlled engine and the use of water-emulsified boiler fuel. NYK adds that the hulls of its pure car carriers have traditionally been painted aurora blue, but this ship has been painted green to signify its status clearly as an environmental flagship.

The Federal Maritime Commission announced a compromise agreement reached with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. (MOL) and its corporate affiliate, Nissan Motor Car Carrier Co. (NMCC). Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd., is a vessel-operating common carrier based in Japan. As a separate line of commerce, MOL and NMCC operate pure car carriers (PCCs) and roll on/roll off (RO/RO) vessels in U.S. inbound and outbound trades. Under the agreement, MOL agreed to pay $1,275,000 in penalties. The compromise agreement resolved allegations that MOL and NMCC violated section 10(a) of the Shipping Act, 46 U.S.C.

Both carriers are headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, and operate diverse fleets trading in the U.S.-foreign trades and globally. The compromise agreements resolved allegations that K Line and NYK Line violated provisions of the Shipping Act, including section 10(a) of the Shipping Act, 46 U.S.C.

Rizhao Steel (Cara Shipping) are understood by Clarkson Hellas to have contracted two firm 180,000 DWT Capesize at both Dalian and Qingdao Beihai, with an additional two options at the latter. These orders are understood to have been concluded in the middle of this year, with delivery of the first vessel from Beihai lined up for 2015 and the remainder all due in 2016. Following a limited number of new orders so far this year, the VLCC orderbook, which currently stands at around 50 vessels, has seen the addition of two firm plus two option 300,000 DWT crude tankers from Metrostar at HHI. Although pricing remains undisclosed delivery of both firm vessels is planned for the first half of 2016.

MHI announces outline of FY 2012 first 3-month financial results
 ended June 30, 2012 (consolidated). Overall, orders declined from a year ago, reflecting decreases in Power Systems and Machinery & Steel Infrastructure Systems, where orders were strong in the previous fiscal year. Orders received : Up ¥10.7 billion YoY, although the orders environment for new commercial ships remained difficult, orders increased from a year ago, thanks to the order for a new-type LNG carrier. Backlog of ship orders: 32 (6 LNG carriers, 3 LPG carriers, 2 cruise ships, 2 pure car carriers, 2 container ships, 2 ferries, 2 seismic vessels and others. MHI delivered a total of 9 vessels in the quarter, including 3 ferries, 2 pure car carriers, 2 patrol vessels, 1 roll-on/roll-off vessel and 1 ore carrier.

The christening and launch of a car carrier, named the EMERALD ACE, took place today at the Kobe Shipyard & Machinery Works of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), for delivery to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. The ship represents the last commercial vessel to be built at the Kobe Shipyard in consequence of ongoing reorganization of MHI's production structure in the company's Shipbuilding & Ocean Development business segment. Delivery of the vessel to owners is slated for late June. The EMERALD ACE, hull No.1296 built at the Kobe Shipyard, measures about 200 meters (m) in overall length, 32.26 m in breadth and 34.52 m in depth.

MOL’s new generation of ‘eco-friendly’ efficient PCTCs are entering service; they feature MacGregor RoRo access outfits from Cargotec and are the world’s first car carriers to have all of their RoRo equipment electrically-driven. Cargotec’s growing electric-drive RoRo reference portfolio now includes the first vessel to have all-electrically-driven RoRo access equipment entering service. The 4,000-unit pure car truck carrier (PCTC), Iris Ace, is owned and operated by Japanese company, Mitsui O.S.K.

Hong Kong based Univan Shipmanagement becomes the latest organization to achieve certification from class society ABS in order to meet the IMO’s International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code in preparation for the July 2004 implementation date. Univan Ship Management and its sister company Pacific Marine, together manage a diverse fleet of over one hundred vessels comprising tankers, bulk carriers, pure car carriers, chemical tankers, container carriers, general cargo vessels, reefers, supply vessels and woodchip carriers.
