RV Sally Ride Completes Builder's Trials

The U.S. Navy's new Auxiliary General Purpose Oceanographic Research Vessel (AGOR), R/V Sally Ride (AGOR 28), has completed builder's trials, February 21, off the coast of Anacortes, Wash. Builder's trials for Sally Ride tested various shipboard systems and ensured readiness prior to conducting acceptance trials with the U.S. Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey. The propulsion system, mission-over-the-side handling equipment, anchor handling system and work/rescue boat launch system were among the systems successfully demonstrated.

Oceanographic R/V 'Sally Ride' Christened

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus named the 'R/V Sally Ride' to honor the memory of Sally Ride, a scientist, innovator and educator. Ride was the first American woman and the youngest person in space. She later served as director of NASA’s Office of Exploration as well as the California Space Institute at University of California San Diego. “The christening of this ship is not only a celebration of the hard work and dedication of the men and women who have brought this vessel from an idea to a reality, but also of the spirit of exploration and discovery shared by Sally Ride and the United States Navy,” said Mabus. Australia’s Largest Research Vessel Ready for Launch

Australia’s new research vessel, Investigator

At the end of 2013, the team of Sembawang Shipyard of Singapore and Teekay Shipping Australia will hand over the new scientific Research Vessel Investigator to her owners, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), an agency of the Federal Government of Australia. The Investigator will be among the most capable and quietest non-naval research vessels in the world. It will serve Australia in diverse scientific operations ranging over an area from the equator to the ice shelf of Antarctica and spanning almost 1/3rd of the circumference of the globe.

Diesel-Electric Units Prepared for Navy’s AGOR Project

During most of 2012 Cummins Northwest was busy with the procurement of the various subsystems and assembly of the diesel-electric units for the two Ocean Class Auxiliary General Purpose Oceanographic Research (AGOR) vessels building at Dakota Creek Shipyards. The company delivered the first four-unit ship set in January of this year. Seattle-based Guido Perla & Associates, Inc. has done the design work for the two vessels. Four Cummins QSK38-DM powered electrical generators will provide power for each of these 238 x 50-ft. vessels.

Two Navy Research Vessels Enter Construction Phase

Construction for two new research ships funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) officially got underway with a keel-laying and dedication ceremony Aug. 17 in Anacortes, Wash. Contracts for both state-of-the-art Ocean-class Auxiliary General Purpose Oceanographic Research (AGOR) vessels were awarded in late 2011 and earlier this year. During the traditional ceremony, the first pieces of steel comprising the keels for AGOR 27 and 28 were etched with the keel certifiers’ initials. “Gaining exact knowledge and understanding of the oceans is critical to fulfilling today’s and tomorrow’s Navy and Marine Corp missions,” said Chief of Naval Research Rear Adm. Matthew Klunder, who spoke at the ceremony.

TAIWAN – Research Vessel Ready for Launch

The Taiwan Ocean Research Institute (TORI) is preparing the launch of the new 2.700 ton – ORV, Multi purpose Oceanographic Research Vessel, “RESEARCH V”. The vessel that is being constructed in the shipyard Jong Shyn Shipbuilding Group in Kaohsiung will be launch in June, and will be completed by 2012. Jong Shyn is responsible for the delivery of the complete research vessel to TORI and the Taiwanese science community. TORI is one of the National Applied Reseach Laboratories (NARL) in Taiwan. Deck equipment and oceanographic winches has being supplied by Spanish companies.

VT HALTER Lays Keel for Navy Survey Ship

VT Halter Marine, Inc. held a keel laying ceremony for T-AGS 66 USNS Maury, which is currently under construction at Halter Moss Point. In December 2009, VT Halter Marine was awarded a contract of approximately $87M to build an enhanced version of the T-AGS 60 Class oceanographic survey ship for the U.S. Navy. Delivery of the vessel is expected in July 2013. T-AGS 60 Class ships are designed and constructed to provide multi-purpose oceanographic capabilities for typical missions such as: oceanographic sampling and data collection of surface, midwater and ocean floor parameters; launching, recovering, and towing scientific packages, both tethered and autonomous…

GUIDO PERLA, SENER to work together on SWATH project

GUIDO PERLA & ASSOCIATES, Seattle, Washington, and Spain’s SENER INGENIERIA Y SISTEMAS have teamed up to develop the detailed structure and outfitting engineering of an oceanographic research ship, designated the AGOR-26. SENER’s computer-aided ship design and production system, FORAN, will be used for the work, most of which will be carried out in Seattle by GPA staff assisted by SENER engineers. A second SENER team will be working in parallel from its Tres Cantos offices. AGOR-26 will be configured as a Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) vessel following a conceptual design made by LOCKHEED MARTIN LAUNCHING SYSTEMS, Middle River, Maryland, in response to a requirement from the OFFICE OF NAVAL RESEARCH, the Oceanographer of the US Navy.
