Dometic Electric Power Steering Earns RINA Certification
Dometic’s Vancouver facility has received RINA Approval and Certification for its Optimus 5000 Electronic Power Steering System (EPS), opening the door for growth in yachting and commercial marine markets.The Dometic Optimus 5000 EPS is engineered for inboard vessels ranging from 40 to 100-plus feet in length. Its manufacturer believes the Type Approval from the Italian classification group on the Optimus 5000 EPS for both pleasure and commercial vessels under 500 metric tons will positively impact on its marine business globally.
Cammell Laird Appoints New QA Manager
Merseyside UK shipyard and engineering services company Cammell Laird has appointed a new quality assurance manager to forge closer relationships with suppliers and bring best practice from other industries to his new role.Gordon Maxwell is the new QA manager heading up a team of 19 striving to deliver the company vision of getting it right first time.He said he is looking to take a more proactive approach to quality assurance as he draws on his experience of working for the likes of television parts manufacturer Philips Components and central heating manufacturer Baxi.
AMS Annual Membership Conference & Awards
The October 7th Annual Membership Conference for members of American Maritime Safety, Inc., was not officially billed as a 23rd anniversary event. Nevertheless, the story of AMS, an organization established by a group of U.S. based vessel owners and operators, is worthy of special mention. Indeed, this New York based Maritime Consortium has rapidly expanded in scope since its founding in 1988. From humble beginnings in New York, AMS has grown to over 400 vessel owners and operators and is now recognized as the leading industry association on regulatory compliance in the U.S.
RK 280 to be Launched as MAN 28/33D
The RK 280, previously developed and sold through the U.K. branch of MAN B&W Diesel, will be transferred to the headquarters in Augsburg and newly launched as an MAN 28/33D engine. The commercial responsibility will shift from the U.K. to the Medium Speed Marine division, headed by Prof. Dr. Wolfram Lausch as of July 1. The engine will be fully implemented into the medium-speed production and quality control systems. All technical and support functions will be managed out of the headquarters in Augsburg. The 28/33D engine is sold in a 12V, 16V and 20V configuration. It runs on MDO and is rated 450 kW per cylinder. The first engines have been put into service during this year. Initial applications are main propulsion for fast ships.
