On Saturday, June 16, 2018, Webb Institute awarded 21 Bachelor of Science degrees at its 122nd Commencement Ceremony. Each graduating student received a dual degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Webb’s commencement ceremony included inspirational remarks from Webb’s President R. Keith Michel and keynote speaker, Dr. Kirsi K. Tikka, Executive Vice President and Senior Maritime Advisor at American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and former Webb Institute Professor of Structural Engineering. Dr. Tikka’s inspirational speech touched on how Webb graduates can take advantage of the technological advancements in the marine industry and use them to make major impacts in the field.

Crowley Maritime Corp. has awarded a Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarship to Tyler Gray-Hoehn, class of 2018 at the Webb Institute, a highly-selective undergraduate institution in Glen Cove, N.Y., specializing in naval architecture and marine engineering. Gray-Hoehn, who hails from Brookfield, Wisc., was recognized for his dedication, academic excellence and leadership as a student Webb. He is senior class president and vice president of the Webb Institute’s Student Organization (SO), and has also been Webb’s Motor Boat Chair, Van Chair and a member of the Honor Council.

Hannah Wistort, Webb Institute class of 2017, is the 2016-2017 recipient of Crowley Maritime Corporation’s Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarship. Webb’s scholarship selection committee chose Wistort for her academic excellence and leadership skills. Wistort, who is from Niskayuna, N.Y., has been involved with many student organizations and community projects. She is a member of the Webb Leadership Committee, which organizes community service and outreach projects for students.

The McMullen Family Foundation Scholarship Program was established at Webb Institute in 2009 to help off-set room and board expenses. Retired Chairman of the Board of the Herbert Engineering Group of Companies and Webb Institute alumnus, R. Dr. George Campbell Jr. R. Keith Michel, Chairman of the Board of the Herbert Engineering Group of Companies, has been appointed President of Webb Institute, the country’s foremost school of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, effective July 1, 2013. The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers named Erik Seither as its next Executive Director of the Society, according to a press release posted on the organization’s website. Seither will become the 12th person to serve in the capacity since the organization’s founding in 1893. He will assume the helm of SNAME HQ on July 6, succeeding Phil Kimball, who has held the position since 1998. “I am thrilled to be selected to work with an organization of such distinguished and professional people,” Seither said.

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) announced that a program dedicated to the training of future naval systems engineers will soon be realized. A $3.2m contract awarded May 6 from the Naval Sea Systems Command, which includes five additional years of optional extensions that could add up to $49.9m, will establish a Naval Engineering Education Center (NEEC) Consortium in partnership with fifteen leading US colleges and universities, SNAME and the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE). SNAME President Keith Michel and Malcolm MacKinnon III, Chairman of the Marine Board, released the Notice of Meeting and Technical Program Schedule for the symposium on Climate Change. Climate Change and Ships, Increasing Energy Efficiency Symposium will be held February 16 and 17 at the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS) in Linthicum, Md. The symposium is organized around three themes: (1) the Energy Efficiency Design Index for new ships now under development at the IMO, (2) the cost effectiveness of market-based mechanisms applied to shipping, and, (3) technical and operational measures to increase energy efficiency on ships. Each session will consist of a series of technical presentations followed by a panel discussion with audience participation.

Challenging economic conditions didn’t stop a record number of industry professionals from attending The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) 2009 Annual Meeting and Expo. The three-day event (October 21-23) drew more than 1,150 to the Providence, Rhode Island Convention Center. "In all aspects, the 2009 SNAME Annual Meeting was a resounding success. The focused panel sessions at the Society of Naval Architects and Engineers (SNAME) Annual Meeting and Expo (October 21-23 at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, Rhode Island) will feature four timely topics: Electric Ships; Renewable Energy from the Oceans; Unmanned and Autonomous Ships of the Future; and Ship Efficiency in the Greenhouse Gas Era. Each two-hour panel session will be chaired and moderated by experienced SNAME members. Each session will have three leading experts who will make thirty minute presentations on their area of expertise, followed by a moderated thirty minute discussion period which will include questions and answers from the audience.

Following on from the success of the special panel sessions at the 2008 Annual Meeting held in Houston, Texas, SNAME will have an expanded Special Panel program at its 2009 Annual Meeting. The SNAME Annual Meeting which will take place from 21-23 of October in Providence, Rhode Island, will feature four Special Panel Sessions. Each of these sessions are intended to examine the broad technical and policy issues in a particular area of emerging interest to SNAME members and to a wide audience of others who have interest in maritime issues. •    Following on from the successful Electric Ship Design Symposium held in Early 2009, this panel session will focus on the electric ship construction experience of three large shipbuilders.

At a meeting during the World Maritime Technology Conference (WMTC) in Mumbai, India, a delegation of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) members including Society President Keith Michel, Executive Director Kimball, Naresh Maniar, Bruce Hutchison and Todd Grove met with members of the Institute of Naval Architects of India (INAI) at the offices of Bharati Shipyard Ltd. in downtown Mumbai to negotiate and sign a cooperative agreement between the two societies.
