German Shipping to Use LSFO

The vast majority of ships in the German fleet will run on the new sulfur-reduced fuel (Low Sulfur Fuel Oil, LSFO) from 1 January at the latest. This is one of the findings of a survey conducted by the German Shipowners’ Association (Verband Deutscher Reeder, VDR) among its member companies.While the body of data obtained through the survey is not representative of the German shipping industry as a whole, it does reflect views that can certainly be extrapolated since the respondents include shipping companies from every sector of the German shipping industry. Germany Mulls Onshore Power in Seaports

SMM 2014 Witnesses Record Turnout

SMM was another full success. With more than 2,100 exhibitors from all around the world, including 150 first-timers, with 50,000 industry visitors and roughly 90,000 square metres of exhibition space, SMM has demonstrated once again what it means to be the leading international trade fair of the maritime industry. After four days brimming with activity, the 26th SMM came to a close today. "We set new records this year," said Bernd Aufderheide, CEO and President of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH. "The excellent turnout not only showed that companies are ready to meet the current challenges with determination, but it also revealed a growing appreciation for collaboration," he added.

Germany as a Maritime Location Endangered: VDR

Germany, which currently is home to the world’s biggest container vessel fleet, will in future have fewer small shipping firms as European banks avoid the industry and American and Asian financiers focus on bigger peers, according to a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) cited by shipping industry trade publication 'Maritime London' in its latest newsletter. As shipowners face pressure to put more fuel-efficient vessels into service to get better rates, they will need to team up with peers in alliances or mergers to tap financing sources, according to PwC’s Claus Brandt. Smaller shipping companies will bid farewell to the market, because they don’t have access to financing sources. Only companies of a certain size will get foreign capital.

Atlas World is Inaugurated

Atlas Elektronik last month opened its new presentation, simulation and integration center dubbed “Atlas World.” The Managing Directors of Atlas, Dieter Rottsieper and Kai Horten, officially opened the new facility together with Ralf Nagel, Bremen’s Senator for Economic Affairs and Ports, and Captain Werner Lüders, Director of Naval Armaments and Logistics for the German Navy. The new center is designed to showcase and demonstrate the company’s products and systems from the world of naval technology.
