The world's largest liquefied natural gas company Qatargas announced that Qatargas Ras Laffan Terminal Operations (RLTO) has safely loaded the 10,000th cargo shipment of non-LNG product in Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC).Since starting operations in 2006, the dedicated teams at Qatargas have efficiently and reliably loaded more than four billion barrels of product to customers all over the world. With demand continuing to grow for the vast array of products produced in RLIC, RLTO is entrusted to handle approximately one million barrels of oil equivalent of product every single day.To celebrate this important milestone, a ceremony was held onboard the receiving vessel – the LPG Tanker 'Serjeant'.

Qatar Petroleum (QP) is expected to order 60 new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers to serve new customers once it ramps up its annual capacity from the current 77 million tonnes (mt) to 110 mt after building four liquefaction trains by 2024.A report in Gulf Times quoted the Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad bin Sherida al-Kaabi, who is also president and CEO of QP saying that the state-run oil company has a team, which is in talks with different ship builders worldwide.“It should be between 50 and 60 vessels that we will require to transport the expanded output of LNG. It will be very substantial number, but things will become clear with time,” he said.He added: “We have a dedicated team of experts who are already working on that element (to acquiring vessels).

Qatargas and Shell have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will lead to the two companies jointly researching liquefied natural gas (LNG) logistics. Through this joint logistics research collaboration, Qatargas and Shell aim to develop new ways to optimize supply chains to deliver to LNG global markets. The research will be conducted at the Qatar Shell Research & Technology Centre at the Qatar Science & Technology Park. The MOU was signed by Faisal Al Suwaidi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Qatargas Operating Company, and Andy Brown, Managing Director of Pearl GTL and Qatar Shell Country Chairman. Nakilat Damen Shipyards Qatar (NDSQ) has delivered five vessels as part of an 11-vessel order for New Port Project (NPP). Built entirely at the Erhama Bin Jaber Al Jalahma Shipyard in Ras Laffan Industrial City, the vessels were launched and delivered to NPP after successful completion of their sea trials. Measuring 15.4 meters long with a beam of 5 meters and a speed of 25 knots, the two Damen Stan Pilot 1505 pilot boats Um Alhoul 1 and Um Alhoul 2 will be used to carry out pilot duties and the transportation of personnel.

Qatar Petroleum (QP) has announced the delivery of the 500th liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo from QP affiliate Qatar Liquefied Gas Company (2) to the South Hook LNG Terminal at Milford Haven in the United Kingdom. The landmark delivery, on Thursday March 24th, was made on board the Q-Flex LNG vessel Al-Hamla. Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the President and CEO of Qatar Petroleum, described the delivery as “another significant achievement for Qatar’s LNG industry”. Mr. Al-Kaabi said “this milestone reaffirms the importance of Qatari LNG as pillar for the energy industry and the security of global gas supplies. It also highlights Qatar Petroleum’s commitment to the reliable supply of clean energy to its customers around the world”.

Nakilat, in association with Qatari LNG producers Qatargas and RasGas Company Limited and engine manufacturer MAN Diesel & Turbo, recently celebrated the success of the ME-GI project involving the retrofit of chartered Q-Max vessel, Rasheeda, with a gas-burning M-Type Electronically Controlled – Gas Injection (ME-GI) System, which has now been successfully commissioned. The Qatari-owned Q-Max vessel is the world’s first low-speed marine diesel engine to be converted to use LNG as a fuel. The retrofit modification meets the current known and future stated global emissions regulations. Nakilat’s Rasheeda built in 2010 is a 266,000 m3 LNG carrier with two MAN B&W S70ME-C HFO-burning engines, which have been converted to the dual-fuel ME-GI concept.

SPS Overlay has been used on three tankers to provide thermal insulation boundaries between two Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) tanks to successfully convert one of them into a Marine Gas Oil (MGO) tank. This was the first time that SPS Overlay has been used in this application; and was approved by Lloyds Register (LR). Carried out at Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar by Intelligent Engineering’s partner, Clarkson Technical Services Offshore Marine (CTSOM), on behalf a global shipping company, each of the three ships had areas of 50m² of SPS Overlay fitted to bulkheads between two adjacent fuel tanks. Nakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine (N-KOM), a joint venture shipyard established by Nakilat and Singapore’s Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M), has secured a contract worth $19 million (69 million Qatari Riyals) to design and construct a floating jetty for Qatar Primary Materials Company (QPMC). Scheduled for completion in early 2015, the floating jetty is the first project that N-KOM will be undertaking for QPMC. The floating jetty situated in Ras Laffan Industrial City will be QPMC’s second floating jetty in Qatar, with another jetty project ongoing in Lusail and Gabbro berths in Mesaieed.

Maritime Reporter recently spent some time with Abu Bakar Bin Mohd Nor, CEO, Nakilat - Keppel Offshore and Marine Ltd., Ras Lafan, Qatar, to discuss the new shipyard’s approach to winning business in a tight environment. When you look at the expanse of your operations, what do you count as the primary strength of your company?

Fugro GEOS won a contract award which provides Qatar Shell with support for a seabed water temperature monitoring system. The 5-year contract will ensure round-the-clock support and maintenance of the metocean monitoring system, which is part of the Pearl GTL (gas-to-liquids) project in Ras Laffan, Qatar. Pearl GTL is jointly developed by Qatar Petroleum and Shell. Designed, installed and maintained by Fugro GEOS, the monitoring system is a critical element, providing real-time information to help minimise flow assurance problems in pipelines which link the two Pearl offshore platforms with the onshore plant. Using acoustic telemetry, data are sent from the seabed to the platforms and the system interfaces in real-time with the platform’s control system.

His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, The Emir of Qatar officially inaugurated the Pearl Gas to Liquids (GTL) Project, the largest GTL plant in the world and the largest energy project in the state of Qatar. Qatar Petroleum and Shell announced that the Pearl gas-to-liquids (GTL) plant, located in Ras Laffan Industrial City in the State of Qatar, has sold its first commercial shipment of GTL Gasoil. The sale marks the start of production of GTL products when the State of Qatar and Shell, the operator of the Pearl GTL plant, begin to receive revenue from the project. Over the coming months, production will ramp up from the first production unit (‘train’) of the Pearl GTL project. The second train is expected to start up before the end of 2011. Qatar Petroleum and Shell today announced the first flow of dedicated offshore gas into the Pearl GTL plant located in Ras Laffan Industrial City in the State of Qatar. Shell, which is the operator of the Pearl GTL plant developed under a Production and Sharing Agreement with QP, has opened natural gas wells offshore allowing the first sour gas to flow through a subsea pipeline into the giant GTL plant onshore. RasGas has expanded its LNG fleet with the recent launch of two vessels at Daewoo’s shipbuilding yard in South Korea, GulfTimes reports. With the addition of Al Marrouna and Al Areesh, RasGas’ LNG fleet strength will go up to 10. The two ships, owned by Teekay Nakilat Corporation, a consortium between Teekay Shipping and Nakilat, will have a cargo carrying capacity of 151,700m3 each. They will be on a long-term time charter with RasGas. Al Marrouna and Al Areesh will be the largest RasGas ships delivered to date. The ships will ferry LNG to the European and Far Eastern markets. Al Marrouna will be delivered to RasGas on October 31 followed by Al Areesh on January 2. Both ships will be operated by Teekay Shipping.
