French shipbuilder OCEA has launched a new offshore patrol vessel for the French Maritime Affairs. Traxens Joins EU DataPorts Project

French supply chain data services company Traxens has joined the new European DataPorts project, aimed at creating a data platform for cognitive ports of the future.DataPorts is an EU-funded, three-year project with a budget of $7.3 million (€6.7 million). Port of Valencia Pilots IoT with MSC and Traxens

French start-up Traxens and  MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company is cooperating with its partner in a pilot project in Valencia to use an Internet-of-Things (IoT) network to improve the operational efficiency of the port.MSC is already working with Traxens, which provides data and services for the supply chain industry, on smart container solutions using IoT for customers around the world. Iridium NEXT Successful Third Launch

Iridium Communications has announced the successful third launch and deployment of 10 Iridium NEXT satellites. The satellites were delivered into low-Earth orbit approximately one hour after a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 5:37 a.m. PDT. With two successful launches having already been completed this year, this third batch of 10 satellites brings the total number of Iridium NEXT satellites in orbit to 30, nearly half the amount required for a full Iridium NEXT operational constellation.

Indian Ports to Implement RFID

All Major Ports have been directed to implement the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system to track the movement of men, materials and vehicles within the port premises on real time basis. Implementation of RFID system will eliminate manual checking of documents at port gate and real time tracking of movement of vehicles, men and materials. This would reduce congestion and also cost of operations at Ports. Ports have been directed to have the RFID system in place by 31.03.2017. At Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), Kolkata Port Trust,  for RFID based Vehicle Tracking and Management System work order placed on 9.5.2016. Software developed and other activities are in process. Telerik says that its customer Bhagwan Marine, a leader in servicing the oil and gas industry, together with partner, Glenfield Digital Group, has released the first mobile app for offshore energy vessel management. 'LiveFleet'. Telerik explains that Bhagwan Marine wanted to be the first to leverage technology to promote its business in a bold way, setting it apart from industry-standard four-color printed brochures. The company decided to pursue a mobile app that would organize extensive vessel information and specifications, show vessel location in real-time, offer push notifications, pictures and more. Also the app would help manage Bhagwan Marine’s 700 person workforce, a critical need since 90 percent of staffers work remotely.

UANi Surveillance Points Up Swedish Iran Sanction-buster Tankship

United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) has called on Sweden’s Stoc Holding AB to explain and cease its business to and from Iran with the tankship 'Persia'. According to UANI, Stoc Holding controls a vessel, called the "Persia," that appears to operate a dedicated route in support of Iran's petrochemical industry. Stoc Holding openly advertises its ties to sanctioned Iranian entities on the front page of its website. UANI recently launched its Maritime Intelligence Network and Rogue Vessel Analysis (MINERVA) system, to provide real-time tracking and course prediction for Iranian and Iran-related vessels. MINERVA’s unique capabilities allow UANI to monitor such vessels, and take relevant action to halt illegal Iran-sponsored shipping schemes.

MarAd Unveils MarView

Information on the condition and performance of the Marine Transportation System – including ports, vessels, waterways and intermodal connections – will be available on a Web-based, data-driven set of tools developed by the MarAd. The information system, called MarView, provides access to more than 2500 links to transportation data sources, giving statistics on intermodal freight transportation and on trained and licensed mariners. It provides real-time tracking of vessels, plus physical attributes information on national and international ports, vessels, and related facilities. Furuno to Offer Sirius Marine Weather

Furuno and SIRIUS are working together to provide satellite weather information on the NavNet vx2 line of multifunction navigation units. Furuno will be releasing the BBWX1 SIRIUS Weather Receiver in late spring. This receiver will simply plug into an existing NavNet vx2 network, requiring only a software update to the NavNet vx2 displays to allow access to the BBWX1. The combination of NavNet vx2 and the BBWX1 will provide live, up-to-date weather information and forecasting. The information will be overlayed onto a C-Map MAX chart, allowing one to see the weather cells in relation to one’s geographic location. A monthly SIRIUS Marine Weather subscription is required.

Salvors Plan for Effective Casualty Response

A 10-point plan for more effective ship casualty response has been put forward by the International Salvage Union (ISU). The plan includes a proposal for an advanced EU “Casualty Response Database”, capable of real-time tracking of large salvage tugs and other key salvage assets. Speaking at the Barcelona Shipping Law Forum today, ISU President Joop Timmermans said: “Some of these measures can be put into place very quickly. Others are for the longer term. All 10, however, would make a useful contribution to improved casualty response. · Measure 1: EU adoption of the UK Command and Control model, based around a Ministerial Representative (the “SOSREP” in the UK).
