CNO Speaks to Naval Aviators at Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Symposium

CNO discussed the vital role of maritime patrol and reconnaissance to the maritime strategy, emphasizing the need to work with other navies. "Yours is a community that gives us that global presence," said Roughead. CNO spoke about his three priorities to maintain current readiness, build tomorrow's Navy and the importance of Sailors, Navy civilians and their families. He said it was imperative the Navy is ready for the challenges of today and tomorrow.

CNO Visits Sub Base, PCU New Hampshire

Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Gary Roughead visited New London Naval Submarine Base and General Dynamics' Electric Boat facility in Groton, Conn. on Feb. 21. During the visit, Roughead flooded the graving dock at the shipyard facility allowing Pre-commissioning Unit New Hampshire (SSN 778), the fifth Virginia-class submarine, to be "launched" when it touched water for the first time. Trips such as these allow CNO to see first-hand the design and manufacture of new ships and submarines. This was the latest in a series of visits to public and private shipbuilding facilities and will serve to inform the CNO's decision making as he builds the fleet of the future. "To me the submarine is the ultimate stealth weapon that we have and the capabilities that you bring are absolutely critical.

CNO Discusses Maritime Strategy

Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Gary Roughead, briefed the Pentagon press corps on the maritime strategy, building the future Fleet and his priorities as CNO, Feb. 12 at the Pentagon. Roughead talked about releasing and executing the maritime strategy and highlighted some of the trips he has made in the last four months, including visiting Sailors in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. Roughead praised the work of Sailors on the ground and at sea, and the contributions they're making. "The individual augmentees that we have there are doing great work," Roughead said.

SECNAV, CNO Environmental Awards Presented at Navy Memorial

The Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) and the Chief of Naval Operations Environmental Awards were presented June 7 in two different ceremonies at the U.S. Navy Memorial and Naval Heritage Center here. The annual CNO Environmental Awards program recognizes Navy people, ships and installations for their exceptional environmental stewardship. The CNO Environmental Award winners then move up to compete for the SECNAV Environmental Awards which recognize Navy and Marine Corps individuals, teams, ships and installations for their exceptional environmental stewardship. Competition categories include natural resources conservation, cultural resources management, environmental quality, pollution prevention and environmental restoration. Vice Adm. Michael K.
