Equinor Energy Strikes Gas in Barents Sea

Norwegian multinational energy company Equinor Energy has made discovery containing up to 24billion cubic feet of gas in the Barents Sea. Two exploration targets were found, with the first containing between 10 and 20billion cubic feet, the other between one and four billion. The discovery’s profitability is currently unclear, said a statement from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD)."Equinor Energy AS has completed the drilling of wildcat well  about 15 kilometres northwest of discovery well (Atlantis) and 370 kilometres north of Hammerfest. The well's primary exploration target was to prove oil in reservoir rocks from the Late Triassic Age (upper part of the Snadd formation)…

Spudding of Gierałtowice Well

San Leon Energy, the AIM listed company focused on oil and gas exploration in Europe and North Africa, announces that it has spudded the Gierałtowice well, which is the second well being drilled in the Karpaty area in Poland. The Gierałtowice prospect is on the Bielsko-Biała concession in Karpaty and is targeting 4 Bcf of mid-case recoverable gas in two target reservoirs - the Upper Carboniferous sandstone being the primary target with the Lower Carboniferous limestone as a secondary target. San Leon Energy holds 60% and is operator of the concession, with PGNiG holding the remaining 40%. The drilling of the well is expected to be completed in the next few weeks, with any well testing occurring immediately afterwards.

San Leon Finds Oil in Poland Well

San Leon Energy, the AIM listed company focused on oil and gas exploration in Europe and North Africa, announces that it is spudding the Kety exploration well today, which is the first well of a three-well planned programme in the Karpaty area and Permian Basin in Poland. As announced in August, the Company intends to drill two exploration wells in the Karpaty area and one exploration well in the Permian Basin in Poland during a single campaign using a rig from Exalo Drilling. All three wells are relatively shallow and are in a proven hydrocarbon trend area. Drilling of the first well is expected to be completed by mid-October, with completion and testing planned by the end of October if the well is successful.

Ophir Makes Equatorial Guinea Gas Find

Ophir Energy plc announced that the Silenus East-1 well in Block R, Equatorial Guinea has resulted in a new gas discovery. The Silenus East-1 well was drilled by the Vantage Titanium Explorer drillship within the thrust belt area of Block R. A 67m gross gas column was encountered in the primary target with high quality reservoir in line with pre-drill expectations. The well was deepened to test a secondary high risk oil target and encountered high quality, but water-wet, reservoirs with weak oil shows. This play remains of interest to Ophir and will be further evaluated on the Block. The drillship has now moved to complete the Fortuna-2 appraisal well, where Ophir will conduct the first flow test in Block R.

Barents Sea Drillers Strike Gas, Expected Oil

Eni, with partners Lundin and Det Norske hoped for oil but discovered gas & condensate at the Salina structure in western part of the Barents Sea. Det norske oljeselskap ASA earlier announced the discovery of hydrocarbons in the Salina prospect in production license 533, operated by Eni. The well confirmed the existence of gas in two reservoir units; in the Cretaceous Knurr formation, and in the Jurassic Stø formation. The well was drilled to a total depth of 2,371 meters below sea level, down to Triassic rock in the Snadd formation. The operator’s estimate of recoverable gas volumes is between six and eight billion cubic meters (40-50 million barrels of oil equivalents).

New Gas Find in the Norwegian Sea

Gas has been proven by StatoilHydro in exploration well 6507/3-7 Idun North in the Norwegian Sea. Currently being completed, the well is located two kilometres northwest of the Idun find and 12 kilometres north of the Skarv find. The purpose of the well was to prove petroleum in the “Fangst” and “Båt” groups in middle and lower Jurassic rocks. The well proved gas in the “Fangst” group. The underlying “Båt” group was filled with water. “Based on preliminary calculations, the size of the find is estimated at between 0.6 and 3 billion standard cubic metres (Sm3) of recoverable gas,” said Knut Harald Nygård, who is heading StatoilHydro’s exploration activities near existing fields in shallow waters in the northern part of the Norwegian Sea.
