Reederei NSB Widens Panamax-class Container Vessels

In an unprecedented endeavour, the ship manager Reederei NSB is widening its Panamax-class container vessels. DNV GL, the class in charge, is on board, says a report in DNV GL, Maritime Impact. Too young for scrapping, too old to compete: Roughly 500 Panamax-class container ships are currently less than ten years old, barely half their useful life. But facing overcapacities, low charter rates and ierce competition, the Panamax class is under intense pressure. Compared with state-of-the-art and much more capacious newbuildings, its prospects are dim. This is mainly due to the way these vessels were designed. To pass the old locks of the Panama Canal, they were built with unusual dimensions – long and thin and with a large amount of ballast water to compensate the poor stability.

Pull the Handle Down...

A typical NSB 6,500 TEU vessel of NSB.

One of the most effective and easiest fuel reduction operations is reducing the engine power by reducing the speed of a vessel. Out of the total operational costs of a vessel, fuel costs account for, by far, the highest proportion. When fuel prices soared, the technical experts of one of the world’s biggest shipping companies set about to solve the problem, and slowing down was the solution they devised. By 2009 significant fuel savings resulted from sailing its ships at 12 knots instead of 24, and ”Slow Steaming” officially became the standard operating procedure in their fleet.

Container Ship Casualty Still All at Sea, 'General Average' Declared

There is still no permission for MSC FLAMINIA to enter a sheltered area or a subsequent emergency port says the ship manager's update. Reederei NSB and the salvage company both remain in contact with all littoral states to acquire this permission. At the same time, MSC FLAMINIA and its accompanying group of tugs have taken a position over 400 nautical miles west of the entrance of The English Channel to avoid bad weather and the expected swell. Since the coming days are projected to bring deteriorating weather conditions, the group has set a northwesterly course to an area where less swell is expected. Its speed is 4.5 knots. A significant impairment of the stability of MSC FLAMINIA due the expected wave height cannot be excluded and is observed apprehensively.

Port of Refuge Still Denied MSC Flaminia

Ship operator's latest report says fire remains under control although hotspots still exist. The ship's geographical situation remains unchanged, some 200 miles off the nearest land. Without such a permission, which can only be given by European coastal states, the salvage of the vessel is not possible and the success of the operation is compromised. Currently, intense negotiations are being conducted with all littoral states. The ship managers also remains in constant contact with German authorities in order to make use of all possibilities for continuing the salvage operation. Thanks to stable weather conditions, salvage and firefighting operations can be continued. The vessel is listing by 10 degrees.

Flagship-EEM Enables Reduction of Fuel Consumption

Flagship, a part EU-funded maritime transport project, has achieved major advances in accurately measuring on-board power requirements and thereby enabling a reduction in fuel consumption through the development of Flagship-EEM (Energy Efficiency Monitoring). The system enables data acquisition and analysis to continuously evaluate power requirements at every stage of a vessel’s voyage. The system provides information that enables improved fuel consumption that can reduce both operational costs and its environmental impact.
