Ship managers Synergy Group converted a 1992-built, 126,000 cubic meters capacity Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carrier into a Floating Storage Unit (FSU). DSME and Kongsberg Maritime have signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) for a new LNG FSRU regasification control system. As part of the delivery scope for a vessel currently under construction at the Okpo shipyard in South Korea, DSME will develop a High Fidelity Dynamic Simulator for the regasification plant. The JDA, which was signed on 29th November 2016, enables DSME to utilise Kongsberg Maritime’s Dynamic Process Simulator ‘K-Spice’ and the ‘K-Chief’ automation and control system for the joint development of the vessel’s regasification control system. Both parties have extensive experience in the field of LNG vessel control systems. DSME is fast approaching delivery of 100 LNG ships, many of them operating with Kongsberg Maritime’s LNG control system on board.

Regasifying and storing LNG offshore has allowed customers to import gas without committing to land-based infrastructure. The option also speeds up access to vast amounts of energy. “Wärtsilä focuses on completing the LNG value chain,” says Timo Koponen, Vice President, Flow and Gas Solutions, Wärtsilä. “It’s basically creating an alternative to pipeline gas. The end users vary, from industrial clients connected to smaller FSRUs – essentially an LNG carrier equiped by the addition of on-board storage and regas facilities – to large utilities. Last year, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) ordered Wärtsilä seawater/propane based regasification modules for two FSRU customers, Höegh LNG and Gazprom. Classification society ClassNK has released its Guidelines for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Carriers. Global economic and population growth is bringing about increased energy production and consumption. In its latest forecast, CEDIGAZ, an international not-for-profit association dedicated to natural gas information, predicts that global natural gas demand will grow by 1.8 percent a year from 2013 to 2035 with the largest portion of this growth coming from Asia-Oceania and the Middle East. Natural gas share in world primary energy supply is projected to increase from 21.3 percent to 23.6 percent over the same period. As the demand and supply of natural gas increases, the volume of transportation of natural gas will also expand.

The conversion of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carrier, Golar Frost into an FSRU, is being handled by the Main Contractor, Saipem, a leading international turnkey contractor in the oil and gas industry and will be delivered to OLT Offshore LNG Toscana, a company operating in the Italian gas industry.

Repsol-YPF SA, the Spanish-Argentine oil and energy company, shipped 135,000 cu. m. of liquid natural gas (LNG) to a U.S. regasification plant to be processed by Norwegian energy company Statoil ASA. Statoil bought capacity rights at the regasification plant in Cove Point, Md., last year to gain access to the growing LNG market in the U.S.

Mexico is talking to half a dozen companies ahead of opening tenders next month to build and supply a liquefied natural gas terminal at the Pacific port of Manzanillo. The Federal Electricity Commission will open the tenders in the first half of April, after spending time discussing details of the LNG project with potential bidders. Analysts expect to see interest in the building tender from global LNG players like Chevron, Repsol-YPF, Sempra Energy and Royal Dutch Shell. Repsol YPF SA is studying the creation of a joint venture with Tambeyneftgaz and Anadarko for a liquified natural gas (LNG) project in the Yamal Peninsula. The project would transport gas to the west coast of Canada, where it would go through Repsol YPF's regasification plant at Canaport, to be later sold in the US. The company also plans to open an office in Moscow to support its growing business in Russia, to foster opportunities for new partnerships with some of the country's leading companies. Golar LNG Limited is pleased to announce that the company has signed a contract with Keppel Shipyard Limited of Singapore for the first ever conversion of an existing LNG carrier into a LNG Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU). Keppel Shipyard Limited is the leading ship repair yard for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) carriers outside Japan. Moss Maritime of Norway (a Saipem company) has prepared the conceptual specification for the FSRU and will carry out the design and engineering. When the conversion is completed in the second quarter of 2007, it will be the first of its type in the world. The conversion will be made based on relevant DNV class rules and international standards.

Brazil’s state oil company Petrobras may revive a shelved liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports project for the northeast due to disappointment with soaring costs of its planned Gasene natural gas pipeline, according to a Reuters report. A regasification plant could be an alternative to Gasene, or be used jointly with the pipeline as natural gas demand in Latin America’s largest country is soaring. Gasene is designed to connect Brazil’s southeastern and northeastern gas networks. Its initial estimated cost of over $1.1 billion went above $2 billion after Brazil brought in Chinese partner Sinopec earlier this year.
