Mass. Maritime Holds Change of Command Ceremony

Massachusetts Maritime Academy conducted its annual regimental Change of Command Ceremony in conjunction with the celebration of National Maritime Day on Wednesday, May 24.The Change of Command Ceremony is both the symbolic and physical transfer of leadership responsibilities from the graduating senior class to members of the junior class. During the ceremony, held at the Clean Harbors Athletic Stadium on the Academy’s campus, the outgoing Regiment of Cadets Commander 1/C Abigail Pope of Falmouth, Mass., passed her responsibilities to 2/C Cole Francavilla of Stoneham, Mass.

MN100: Massachusetts Maritime Academy

Massachusetts Maritime Academy offers seven undergraduate Bachelor of Science degrees and two graduate Masters of Science programs. The regiment of cadets is comprised of students from around the globe. The academy operates a training vessel used to acquire sea service for the cadets. SUNY Maritime Students Fundraise for Cancer Research

Research for finding cures to childhood cancers got a little help from SUNY Maritime College students last week. A group of students raised more than $5,500 for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a charity that funds childhood cancer research. One evening last week, more than 20 young men lined up in the barbershop to shave their heads. Since during their first year at the college, all male members of the regiment of cadets, called midshipmen under guidance, have to shave their heads, event organizer James Keegan said he believe the organization was appropriate.

NY State Senator to Address SUNY Maritime Cadets

New York State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) will address and preside over SUNY Maritime College’s Indoctrination (INDOC) graduation on Saturday, August 22, the college announced today. Senator Klein will address new students, their parents, family members, friends and supporters of the college, as 340 MUGS (Mariners Under Guidance) participate in graduation exercises marking the completion of their INDOC period. The swearing-in ceremony and Pass-in-Review by the incoming class will take place at Reinhart Athletic Field.

MN 100: Massachusetts Maritime Academy

Massachusetts Maritime Academy is one of nine Massachusetts State Universities. Established in 1891, the academy now offers seven undergraduate and two master’s degrees. Approximately 50-60% of the undergraduates are enrolled in unlimited USCG Merchant Marine License preparatory programs. 1,350 students are members of the Regiment of Cadets residing on campus. The academy operates a training vessel (T.S. Kennedy) used to acquire sea service for the cadets. The academy also has an 87 ton auxiliary training vessel (Ranger) used during the academic semesters for coastal navigation.

Two Maritime Students Earn SUNY Chancellor’s Award

The State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College announced Friday that two student cadets, Julia Paxton of Sebastopol, California, and Brandon Baranyar of Fairfield, Connecticut, have been selected as recipients of the 2014 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. Paxton and Baranyar both are members of the College’s Regiment of Cadets, and both are scheduled to graduate from SUNY Maritime next week. In a ceremony held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center last month, SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher honored the more than 300 college students from campuses throughout the state, presenting 274 SUNY students with the 2014 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, and 68 awards from Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor society.

Bishop to Address SUNY Maritime Commencement

Congressman Tim Bishop will deliver the commencement address when SUNY Maritime graduates its mid-year class Friday, January 31. Maritime’s President, Dr. Approximately 100 students will receive Associate’s, Bachelor’s,or Master’s degrees during the ceremony, which is open by invitation only. Approximately 60 of the January graduates will have also passed the examinations required for licensing by the US Coast Guard as Merchant Marine Officers. All were members of the College’s Regiment of Cadets – a requirement for licensing.
