USMMA Superintendent to Step Down

Superintendent of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Vice Adm. Jack Buono announced his retirement after a maritime career that has spanned more than 45 years.Vice Adm. Buono, a 1978 Kings Point graduate, has spent the past three and a half years at the Academy helm, and will relinquish command at a ceremony in June 2022. His successor has not been announced.“For Ginger and I, serving as the Superintendent and First Lady of the Academy has been the honor of a lifetime,” Buono said. “The young women and men who come here are truly the best and brightest America has to offer.

INSIGHTS: Rear Admiral Mark H. Buzby, USN (Ret)

Rear Admiral Mark Buzby is the Maritime Administrator, U.S. Maritime Administration.Rear Adm. Mark H. Buzby was appointed by President Donald Trump and sworn in as Maritime Administrator on August 8, 2017. Prior to his appointment, Buzby served as president of the National Defense Transportation Association, a position he has held since retiring from the U.S. Navy in 2013 with over 34 years of service. A 1979 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Buzby earned his Bachelor of Science in Nautical Science and U.S. Coast Guard Third Mate License. He was commissioned in the US Navy in June 1979, is a graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College and holds master’s degrees from the U.S.

USMMA to Celebrate 75th Anniversary

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point (USMMA) will celebrate 75 years since initial dedication in 1943, at homecoming this weekend. Crowley Scholarships for USMMA Cadets

Crowley Maritime awarded six U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) cadets with Thomas B. Crowley Memorial Scholarships during  the Containerization and Intermodal Institute’s Connie Awards luncheon in Newark, N.J. Crowley’s Jenny Terpenning, supervisor, marine recruiting, presented the scholarships to Midshipmen (MIDN) Stacee Glass, Connor Sexton, John Terselic, Tanner Evans, Dylan Rabbitt, and Chandler Chiappe, all of whom were chosen based on their academic performance, financial need and interest in pursuing a career at sea after graduation.

USMMA Welcomes Class of 2019

On Saturday, August 8, The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point welcomed 243 “plebe candidates” of the Class of 2019 into the Regiment of Midshipmen as they took USMMA’s Corps of Cadets Oath administrated by Rear Admiral James A. Helis, Ph.D., Superintendent of USMMA, during the Acceptance Day Ceremony and Parade. They were then sworn in as midshipmen in the U.S. Navy Reserve by Rear Admiral Mark R, Whitney, Deputy Commander, Logistics, Maintenance and Industrial Operations Naval Sea Systems Command.

USMMA's Class of 2019 Arrives for Indoctrination

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point (USMMA) today welcomed its incoming Class of 2019, consisting of 255 plebe candidates representing 46 states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. With 50 female candidates, the incoming class has the highest percentage of young women to enter the Academy in its history. Upon arrival, the future midshipmen began a rigorous, 20-day regimen of academic, military, and physical training known as Indoctrination, which will transform them from recent high school graduates into future leaders and licensed maritime officers. “The members of this incoming class represent some of our nation’s best and brightest, with almost a third having graduated in the top 10% of their class,” said Rear Admiral James A. Helis, Superintendent.

Crowley Recognizes USMMA Midshipman Berto

Crowley Maritime Corporation recently presented U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Midshipman Kevin Berto with the Maritime Security Enhancement Award during the Academy’s award convocation. Berto received the award, which was established by Crowley in 2003, in recognition of his strong interest in a port, maritime or transportation security career and high grade point average both in class and at sea as a cadet. Berto is a logistics and intermodal transportation major from Lake Forrest, Ill.

USMMA Celebrates Completion of Mallory Pier

The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point informs it recently hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of Mallory Pier. The pier was completely reconstructed as part of USMMA’s overall $71 million dollar Capital Improvement Plan. Faculty, staff and guests were welcomed by the Regimental Band’s Fanfare Trumpets, who were then followed by a greeting from Rear Admiral James A. Helis, Superintendent. Helis thanked those who played a role in the pier’s completion, including the Capital Improvement Team, engineers, administrators, the Waterfront staff and the contractor, Russell Marine. “The new Mallory Pier is a major accomplishment and a concrete (pun intended) symbol of our ongoing efforts to renovate and modernize the Academy’s facilities…

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) will welcome 237 “plebe candidates” of the Class of 2017 into the Regiment of Midshipmen as they take the Academy oath administrated by Rear Admiral Helis during Acceptance Day Ceremony and Parade, Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. They will be sworn in as U.S. Navy Reserve midshipmen by Vice Admiral Robin R. Rear Admiral Susan L. Dunlap commissioned into the United States Maritime Service by Deputy Secretary of Transportation John Porcari. The ceremony was conducted in the presence of administration, faculty, staff and the Regiment of Midshipmen. Maritime Administrator David Matsuda also attended the commissioning ceremony along with Marlise Streitmatter, chief of staff for the Department of Transportation. "We're thrilled to welcome Captain Dunlap on-board to help continue the important work of training and preparing the next generation of Merchant Mariners," said deputy secretary Porcari.

USMMA Superintendent Departing Kings Point

RADM Greene to assume post at National Defense University. In a move that has yet to be officially posted, Department Of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has reassigned Rear Admiral Philip H. Greene to a position at the National Defense University. Yesterday, Greene resigned at about 1000 hours in a staff meeting at Kings Point. He had been Superintendent at the nation's only federal maritime academy for about a year. MarineLink inquiries to Marad Public Affairs Officers for clarification have so far gone unanswered.

Crowley Presents USMMA Scholarships

In an effort to ensure the next generation of career mariners is the best in their fields, Crowley presented four exemplary United States Merchant Marine Academy students with Thomas B. Crowley, Sr., scholarships Monday at the Containerization & Intermodal Institute's (CII) annual Connie Awards luncheon in Newark, N.J. The event, attended by approximately 300 guests, provided the backdrop for the scholarship presentations to Midshipmen Patrick Showell, Donald ("Buddy") Finnie, Joseph Gaudiano and Bradford Lawhon.

MMA Alumna Praised for Lifesaving Effort

Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) alumna, Sandra Bendixen (MMA, ’05) of Linwood, Wash., was the honored guest at the regular morning formation of the college’s Regiment of Midshipmen on Weds., Dec. 13, 2006. Bendixen received a surprise commendation and plaque from her employer, Interocean American Shipping (IAS),Voorhees, N.J., for her outstanding efforts to render medical assistance to two critically injured longshoremen. Bendixen was cited for her immediate action, skill, and calm and assured manner during the recent shipboard crisis. Mitchell Walker, MMA Class of 1971, vice president and general manager of IAS, traveled to Castine to make the special presentation in the presence of Maine Maritime Academy students.
