The Seaway pilots navigate ships in and out of the ports and harbors of the St. Lawrence Seaway between St. Regis, N.Y. and Port Weller on Lake Ontario.With a length overall of 53.6’, a beam of 17.8’ and a draft of 4.8’, the all-aluminum pilot boat features the Ray Hunt Designs deep-V hull. It is powered by twin keel-cooled Volvo Penta D16, EPA Tier 3-compliant diesel engines, each delivering 641Bhp at 1,800 rpm and a top speed of 23 knots.

Latin America's largest port in Santos in Brazil will maintain regular operations, port operators said after meeting with dock workers and authorities on Wednesday to discuss measures to deal with the coronavirus outbreak.In a statement sent to Reuters, Regis Prunzel, president of operators group Sopesp, said a crisis committee was created with representatives from all stakeholders at the port, where most of Brazil's coffee, sugar, soybeans, corn and cotton are exported to the world.One of the measures agreed on Wednesday will reduce large group gatherings on port premises…

The technology group Wärtsilä strengthens its service offering by acquiring Ships Electronic Services Ltd (“SES”), a UK based company specializing in navigation and communication electronics, installation, maintenance and repair services, mainly for commercial and leisure vessels. The acquisition was signed and closed on 2 May 2019.SES, established in 1974, has its headquarters in Rochester and operates also out of nine other offices in the UK. The company, together with its wholly-owned subsidiary Greenham Regis Ltd, holds a strong local presence across the local marine service market. SES’ turnover is approximately GBP 10m and the company employs 47 staff. The enterprise value of the transaction is GBP 3.2m.

A French cruise company and ship’s Master have been fined $70,000 and $30,000 respectively for endangering human life and entering a prohibited zone following a grounding incident in the remote New Zealand Subantarctic islands.French company Compagnie du Ponant and Captain Regis Daumesnil, a French citizen, were sentenced Tuesday in the Wellington District Court after pleading guilty to charges following the January 2017 grounding of the cruise ship L’Austral on an uncharted rock at the Snares Islands.Both Maritime NZ and the Department of Conservation (DOC) brought charges against Captain Daumesnil, with DOC also prosecuting the company.

With India’s high economic growth and the improvement of container market, Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has been aggressively expanding its sales activities within the region. HMM currently operates seven services and ten vessels between Asia-India, and its export volume from India last year increased almost 70% year-over-year. With the continuous growth of Indian market, HMM – as Korea’s first shipping carrier – has established India’s local subsidiary company in 2005 and has elevated its status as a ‘subsidiary’ to ‘Headquarter’ last September. The agency took the prize for Container Shipping Line of the Year India - Europe Trade Lane in the 7th All India Maritime and Logistics Awards. Ministry of Shipping, Government of India has extended its non-financial support to Mumbai and Nhava Sheva Ship Agents Association for its proposed conference on `Ease of doing business’ on Friday, May 6 at the Hotel St. Regis, Mumbai. This was confirmed by a Senior Officer, of the MoS, in a letter to MANSA following the President's request, during a visit to the ministry office to appraise them about the conference and the objective behind the same. The conference apart from the inaugural session will be demarcated into three segments. This includes issues on ease of doing business with respect to Shipping (Ocean Freight) ; Ports & Terminals ; and Inland logistics (including Rail / Road Transportation).

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that a “no discharge zone” can be established for the New York State portion of the St. Lawrence River. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation petitioned the EPA to prohibit boats from discharging sewage into the river by establishing a “no discharge zone” for the area. The EPA has reviewed the state petition and found that there are adequate facilities around the St. Lawrence for boats to pump out their sewage, rather than dumping it in the water. “It’s astonishing that in 2016, boaters can dump raw sewage into the St. Lawrence River. Declaring this area of the St. Lawrence a “no discharge zone” would provide cleaner water for people who use this river,” said Regional Administrator Judith A. Enck.

A team of engineers from the University of Southampton launched a 3D printed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) from the bow of a Royal Navy warship in a bid to demonstrate the potential use of lightweight drones at sea. After being launched from HMS Mersey off the Dorset coast in the south of England, the UAV was flown autonomously on a pre-programmed route for a few before landing on Chesil Beach. Known as the Southampton University Laser Sintered Aircraft (SULSA), the drone weighed 3kg with a wing-span of nearly 1.5 meters.

Rolls-Royce has won a £12 million order to provide design, integrated power and propulsion systems and equipment for a highly advanced multipurpose service vessel for the Norwegian ship owner Myklebusthaug Management to be built at the Beşiktaş Shipyard in Turkey. This latest contract will see the first UT design vessel to be built by a Turkish shipyard. Around 800 Rolls-Royce UT vessels have been built or are under construction since the first one entered service 40 years ago. The vessel is a brand new design type from Rolls-Royce. The UT 7521 WP will be prepared for a range of offshore duties. The overall length of the vessel will be 98.9 metres with a beam of 21 metres and deadweight of approx. 6000 tons.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC) together with Transport Canada, the Canadian St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC), the U.S. St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, and the Canadian Mohawk Council of Akwesasne have finalized a three-year Joint Observational Study (JOS) that assessed the potential impacts caused by icebreaking activities on the St. Lawrence Seaway. The study’s conclusion, endorsed by all participants, is that no adverse impacts to the shoreline could be observed as a consequence of ice breaking activity. Crowley Maritime Corporation's 's liner services group recently transported a satellite uplink truck and four containers of equipment aboard the Crowley ship Wesertor to Nassau, Bahamas for the live production of the Regis & Kelly show, which has been broadcast from the island's Atlantis Resort this week. The satellite uplink truck is more than 15-feet tall, nearly 37-feet long and is eight-feet wide. Crowley will also handle the transportation of the truck and other gear back to the United States.

The Maritime Administration, in collaboration with the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency, is sponsoring a two-day Workshop on Maritime Energy and Clean Emissions on Jan. 29-30 in Washington, DC. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta will deliver the keynote address on Jan. 29. The first day of the workshop will look at how ports and other transportation modes deal with energy and environmental issues and will examine the impact of state, federal and international policies. The second day will focus on various technologies and methods being explored to improve energy efficiency and reduce air pollution. In addition, several international speakers will discuss policies affecting maritime energy and emissions in their countries.
