Australia's New Icebreaker is Being Towed to the Netherlands

Australia’s new, nearly completed icebreaker built at Damen's Galati shipyard in Romania is traveling to the Netherlands to undergo final commissioning and sea trials that had been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.The Nuyina is currently under a month-long tow from Romania to the Dutch port of Vlissingen, where teams of equipment installers from Western Europe will access the new research and supply vessel (RSV) for final commissioning of essential propulsion, electrical and navigation systems…

China Steel, Iron Ore Slip Deeper into Bear Territory

Chinese steel and iron ore futures fell deeper into bear market territory on Thursday, as the country's exchanges unveiled more measures aimed at dampening the type of speculative trading behind a powerful rally last month. The aggressive steps to limit speculative buying have helped fuel a retreat in raw materials from steel to coal after the mid-April upsurge that inflated volumes and prices to levels that some analysts felt defied fundamentals. On Wednesday, the Dalian Commodity Exchange said it would set a maximum open interest limit for the trading of a single contract in a certain period, excluding business for hedging purposes. The move is aimed at preventing investors from taking excessive positions.

Custom Yachts Feature Hybrid Battery Propulsion

A pair of custom motor yachts is packed with state-of-the-art features and technologies, most notable among them: hybrid propulsion systems. The two yachts may look different, but they are in fact the same design, with an exterior customized according to the owner’s preferences. North American Oil Trains Under Scrutiny

Sheriff Craig Apple assured a room of concerned citizens that county emergency crews were prepared to handle an oil-train accident involving three or four tank cars. Firefighters have been training to combat railcar fires with foam, and evacuation plans are detailed in a 500-page emergency response plan, Apple told residents in a May 12 address. Albany's tracks handle as much as a fourth of the oil pumped from North Dakota's booming Bakken Shale, or up to several 100-car trains per day, each carrying 70,000 barrels. It is one of several spots along North America's new oil-by-rail corridors where residents and officials are restless, following six fiery derailments in the past 10 months.

New Bulk Carrier from Imabari Offers Unique Advantages

Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. completed the 95,000 DWT bulk carrier, Raga at its Marugame Shipyard. The bulk carrier is unique in that it has adopted a next-generation superstructure called the Aero-Citadel, which according to the shipyard offers significant advantages in both air resistance and antipiracy measures. The Aero-Citadel has slimly streamlined shape and includes the accommodation quarters, engine room and funnel casing. This superstructure can reduce the wind pressure during navigation by 25-30% based on wind tunnel testing.

Panama Canal Expansion Update: 3 Million Cubic Meters of Concrete Poured in New Locks

The Panama Canal Expansion Program has made a significant stride forward as it reached 3 million cubic meters of concrete poured in the construction of the new lock complexes for the Expansion Program. “This signals the progress of the construction of the new locks, which is the most important project of the Expansion Program,” Panama Canal Administrator Jorge L. Quijano said. The milestone was registered during the construction of the new locks in the Atlantic side, specifically in the second monolith located in the east wing wall water outlet.

ACP Completes First Monolith at Pacific Locks

A new milestone was reached at the Panama Canal, after completing the construction of the first monolith for the new locks on the Pacific end of the Panama Canal. This monolith is the first one to be completed from a total of 46 such structures being built in the Pacific locks upper chamber. The term monolith refers to each of the sections in which the lock walls are being divided to facilitate their construction. The massive concrete and steel structure is 33.84 meters high, 7.5 meters wide and 27 meters deep and is located in the upper chamber’s east side.

'Aero-Citadel', Anti-piracy, Pro-energy, Ship Superstructure

The Aero-Citadel is a superstructure with a slim streamlined shape which combines ship's accommodation, engine room , and funnel casing. Wind pressure during navigation will be reduced by 25-30% (ahown by wind tunnel testing). In a Cape size bulk carrier, the modular superstructure will enable a decrease of about 2% in fuel consumption (at normal output, about 9m/sec. in a Beaufort force 5 head wind). New marine use LED lighting is also introduced to the accommodation and engine room lighting system, which reduces electric power consumption used for lighting by about 50%.
